Chattahoochee High School Learning Studio (Media Center) Proposed 2017-2020 Budget

Chattahoochee High School (CHS a.k.a. Hooch) is located in Johns Creek, Georgia within
the northern region of the Fulton County School System. As a traditional public high school
serving over 1950 students, the Hooch student body is diverse with 8% Hispanic, 25% Asian, 13%
Black, 49% Caucasian, and 5% Multi-racial. Since CHS is located in the suburban area where the
majority of the family is upper middle class, 11% of the students qualify for free and reduced
lunch (Governors Office of Student Achievement, 2016). Chattahoochee High School is currently
ranked #3 in the state and #281 in the nation according to Newsweek America (2016). With a
solid foundation of the student advisement program, one-third of the Hooch student body
participates in Talent and Gifted seminar, directed study, and internship courses.
With a district-wide initiative to fully personalize student learning through the use of
technology in Fulton County, each teacher has received a Microsoft Surface 3 tablet in March
2016 and students who opted in have also received theirs in September 2016. The school library
media program is expected to create and reinforce a technology-rich environment with this 1:1
device initiative. With the school strategic plan to increase participation in the Career Tech
pathways (graphic design, engineering, computer science, programming, etc.), the school library
media program must explore how the curriculum standards and the cross-disciplinary nature of
authentic learning (project-based learning) can be supported and advanced through STEM/STEAM
and the Makerspace movement.
In preparation for the yearly $10,000 budget, the Learning Studio (Media Center)
Committee will first conduct and analyze an online survey through Microsoft Forms to identify
teachers instructional and technology needs before aligning the results with the district
personalized learning initiatives and schools strategic plan on Career Tech pathway and literacy
growth. The 3-year budget is proposed as follows:

Books School Media Center Fund and County Collection Development Fund
Since the Hooch media center has recently completed its space renovation and the annual
weeding process, the majority of the classical book collection needs to be refreshed or added.
Teacher and student suggestions for book purchase are ongoing and constantly reviewed for the
media center wish list. Georgia Peach Awards books for teen readers will also be purchased for
the school Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl team and all students. A wide variety of graphic novels
and manga will also be the book purchase emphasis for the next three years with the intention to
encourage and foster literacy interest among students who are ELL and low reading levels.
Periodicals TIME magazine, The Economist, National Geographic
Since periodicals such as TIME, The Economist, and National Geographic are in high
demands by the teachers for instructional purposes, these subscriptions will be renewed every year.
New titles will continue to be added by teacher requests and instructional needs.
Software LibGuide and LibraryTrac
The LibraryTrac online software is purchased and renewed every year as a continuous
effort to track student attendance, usage, and visitation trends in the Learning Studio. Since Fulton
County has provided every school the online databases (Gale, EBSCO, Britannica, ProQuest,
Galileo) through MackinVIA, LibGuides is the anchor to deliver both face-to-face and virtual
instruction on how to locate reliable sources and chunk informational texts during the research
process.
Equipment Swivl Cam, Virtual Reality (VR) Gear, and Breakout EDU Kit
Personalize learning through individualized student observations is unleashed with the
power of Swivl cam. Teachers can now offer multiple learning paths and enrichment activities for
students to choose from while providing just-in-time personalized instruction to novice learners.
Students can now reflect and evaluate their progress to further improve and strengthen their next
learning experience. With the Breakout EDU kits, teachers can now gamify and test students
intellectual and academic limits by overcoming obstacles through collaboration, adjusting levels of
difficulty, celebrating achievements, and recreating teachable moments. The VR headsets will
allow students to experience the world in 3D without ever having to leave the classrooms. All
these equipment acquisitions are intended to continuously cultivate a technology-enriched learning
environment within each classroom.
Makerspace Simple Robotics, Coding, Art Supplies, Button Maker, and Green Screens
For the next three years, the Hooch Learning Studio Makerspace WiredUp will be
where students connect, collaborate, and learn how creative making happens while trying to solve
real-world problems. The ultimate goal is for all students to have the exposure and opportunities
to explore simple robotics and circuits with easy-to-use programming software such as Makey
Makey, LittleBits, and Sphero in hope to spark desire for the Career Tech pathways. Under
student requests, button makers and other art supplies such as stitching, quilting, and fabrics for
sewing will also be purchased in order for them to create items according to student choices and
interests. Portable green screens will also be added steadily to the image room in the makerspace
to further promote video editing (iMovie, Movie Maker, etc.) and podcast assignments for
classroom projects.
Office Supplies
Many office supplies such as scissors, tapes, DYMCO labels, markers, pens, sharpies,
staplers, wireless mouse and keyboards, lamination film, butcher paper in all colors, and Microsoft
Surface tablet HDMI adapters must be replenished. Assorted library book supplies such as
bookmarks, date due slips, ink pads, stamps, label covers, and book labels also need to be
restocked every year.
