Learning Experience: Baking a Cake

Programming Purpose:
Two weeks ago, I observed a child in the dramatic area, she was pretending to bake. She
described that she used a fork to beat eggs, and used eggs to bake cakes. She said we use a
fork to mix the egg. The purpose of the experience is to extend the knowledge of baking, by
understanding the different steps involved, and ingredients used.

Objective:
Children will
- Further develop 4.9 by combining the ingredients together and seeing the
transformations along with predicting the outcomes as well.
- Enhancement of 4.5 will occur where the children will be given opportunities to observe
what is happening and interpreting it.
- The children will improve on 3.5 by being able to use sentences to describe what they
see and stating their opinions.

Opening (Introduction)
- I saw the enjoyment that some of you had pretending to bake in the dramatic center.
Today we are going to bake a cake and see the different ingredients that are used to
make it, along with utensils.

Body (Content)
1. Set up the materials used for the experience
2. Invite the children over to participate
3. Allow the children to observe the ingredients and utensils
4. Begin the preparation by pouring out ingredients, and mixing them as well
5. Allow the children to state their opinions and hypothesize during the process
6. Allow the children to participate throughout the process, by helping to add ingredients,
mixing, etc.
7. Ask open-ended questions

Closing (Ending)
- Today we learned how to bake a cake by using all these different ingredients, thank
you everyone for helping and participating, now its time to find another activity.
Transition
- Some children can help me put away the materials if they are interested. The ones who
are not would be directed to other activities that are available to them.
