NC SCOS Essential Standards and Clarifying Objectives

Lesson objective(s):

1. Recap Pythagorean Theorem, Classifying Numbers and Square Roots

2. Determine if a right triangle from side lengths.
3. Applications of the Pythagorean Theorem
Perimeter of a triangle
Word problems/Real life examples

Differentiation strategies to meet diverse learner needs:

ENGAGEMENT
We will capture their interests by reviewing what we have already looked at and build on it to apply to real life situations and problems. We will be
adding real life meaning to existing content.
Here the students will be asking themselves how the theorem can be applied to real life situations. They will also be thinking about how a mathematical
equation can represent values in the world around them.

EXPLORATION
Students will be drawing diagrams of situations and will then interpret the problems through the diagrams and bring out the idea of the Pythagorean
Theorem. The students will be using the Theorem to find perimeters, distances, heights and more.
What is the Pythagorean Theorem? How do we know what values to put where? How is this one different than the last one? What are we going to use
to find the height. Now that we know the height, how are we going to find the perimeter? What pieces go where? Does it matter if a and b are switched
around? Why? What are the only kind of triangles the Pythagorean theorem works for?

EXPLANATION
Student explanations should precede introduction of terms or explanations by the teacher. What questions or techniques will the teacher use to help
students connect their exploration to the concept under examination?
List higher order thinking questions which teachers will use to solicit student explanations and help them to justify their explanations.

ELABORATION
To develop a more sophisticated understanding we will be applying the Pythagorean Theorem to real life situations and problems.
Vocab: Hypotenuse, legs, Pythagorean Theorem, right angle
How is this knowledge applied in our daily lives? Perimeter, height, distance/length

EVALUATION
How will students demonstrate that they have achieved the lesson objective? By accurately completing the word problems on the note sheet and
having an understanding of the homework worksheet.
This should be embedded throughout the lesson as well as at the end of the lesson
