PHILOSOPHY
'KARIKAS' OF THE NEW YOGA
Peter Wilberg
PREFACE ........................................................................................................................... 3
She, who is ever conscious of the vitality of mantra, who is the endless
flash of the perfect and complete I-consciousness whose essence
consists of a multitude of letters, who is the goddess embodying
gnosis, ever knows the totality of categories from the Earth up to Shiva,
which is one in substance with her own Self, and portrayed out of Her
own nature on the canvas of Her own free, clear Self, just as a city is
reflected in a mirror (from which it is non-separate).
In this world, the excessive greatness of Self was revealed to the
exalted preceptor Vasugupta by Shivas inspiration. He received
instruction in a dream and thus, on Mahadeva mountain, he obtained
through divine will the most esoteric Shiva-Sutras He, by
demonstrating the agreement of revelation, experience and
reasoning, put together the import of the sutras in an abridged form by
means of 51 verses which were deep in sense but expressed in lucid
form.
All glory to the Supreme Creative Pulsation of awareness which is the
abode of flashing, uparalleled delight whose majesty of path extends
to far-reaching areas, from the earth up to Shiva This is the work of
Kshemaraja who has received instruction from Abhinavagupta, the
great devotee of the great Lord.
What follows is the first collection of karikas in the tradition of Kashmir Shaivism
to be compiled in the 21st century. They seek to condense (Dichten) in lucid
form the essence of what I call The New Yoga of Awareness - Tantric Wisdom
for Todays World. Thus I dedicate them to Kshemaraja, whose karikas first
inspired my own, and to the writings of his great teacher or preceptor -
Abhinavagupta.

WHAT ARE THE TENETS OF TANTRA?
JUST AS THERE IS
NOTHING OUTSIDE AWARENESS
SO THERE IS NOTHING OUTSIDE GOD
GOD IS NOTHING BUT AWARENESS
AWARENESS IS
ALL THAT IS AND MORE
GOD IS EVERYTHING AND MORE
GOD IS WITHIN EVERYTHING.
EVERYTHING IS WITHIN GOD
EVERYTHING IS GOD
EVERYTHING IS AWARENESS
AWARENESS IS GOD
4
WHAT IS THE WISDOM OF TANTRA?
5
WHAT IS ULTIMATE REALITY?
Without
AWARENESS,
There would be nothing at all
No things and no thoughts
To think them with.
No Worlds
To be Aware of,
And no Words for them.
No Earth, Sun, Sea or Sky,
Matter, Energy, Space or Time.
No Bodies or Beings.
No-thing.
AWARENESS
Therefore, can belong to
No one, no being and no body.
Nobody has or possesses Awareness.
No plant, animal or human being.
Yet every body and every being
Every thing and every thought
Every sensation or emotion
IS AN AWARENESS.
6
The Ultimate Truth -
EVERYTHING IS AN AWARENESS
Every landmass, ocean, river and cloud,
Every particle and atom, cell and organism.
Every rock and plant, fish and animal.
Every body in space and time.
Every planet and star.
Every Universe.
To be aware of any reality at all,
Any thought or thing, being or body, self or world,
There needs first of all to be the reality of Awareness.
Yet if every reality also IS an Awareness, then
AWARENESS ITSELF IS ALL THERE IS
Ultimate Reality.
ANUTTARA.
7
WHAT ARE THINGS?
Everything is aware.
Everything is an awareness.
8
WHAT ARE WORLDS?
Everything we are aware of in the world has its own awareness world.
All worlds, and every thing in them, are each and all awareness worlds.
The horizon of our being and of our world is thus the horizon of our awareness.
Our very being is nothing but an awareness of being and of being in a world.
All things in the world and all worlds are awareness worlds.
9
WHAT IS THE NEW YOGA?
10
WHAT IS FREEDOM?
Remember
Always and forever,
All days, and at each and
Every moment of your life:
AWARENESS alone is
FREEDOM.
Your
Awareness
Of a thought
Is not itself a thought.
It is an awareness
That is free of
Thought.
Your
Awareness
Of a perception
Is not itself a perception.
It is an awareness free of perception.
Your awareness of an emotion
Is not itself an emotion.
But is an awareness
Free of emotion.
11
Your
Awareness
Of a bodily sensation
Is not itself a sensation,
But is an awareness
Free of sensation.
Therefore:
Do not attend to things, but
Attend to your awareness of those things
Then your awareness becomes free of them.
You will begin to feel your own
Free-awareness field.
12
If you find it difficult to
Attend to your awareness of something,
Then be aware of other things at the same time.
In this way, by uniting your awareness of
One thing with that of another, you
Free it from both things.
So if you feel
A pain in a part of your head.
Or a disturbing thought comes to mind in it.
Attend not to the pain or thought but to your
Awareness of the pain or thought, wherever
You sense it in your head.
13
As a blessed air, and as a breeze that circulates like air,
Filling the space around you and enveloping all objects within it.
This is an air that, like the air around a house, invisibly surrounds
The very walls whose inner spaces you find yourself within.
An air that invisibly circulates not only around you, but
Beneath the very ground under your feet.
Every thing,
Every body in space
Has a holy space, a spacious
Hollow of awareness within it.
It also has a halo, a hallowed
Space of awareness
Around it.
14
Can be breathed as a blessed air.
A subtle, all surrounding breeze or draught
So it can also be sensed as a flowing fluid warmth
A radiant light, a myriad of sparkling colours.
Or a symphony of silent sounds.
15
Yet are not all colours formed of light and darkness?
Do not all things shimmer and quiver with the exquisite
Vibration of their own as-yet unsensed potentials, all those
Immanent powers that She, the Great Goddess, Mahadevi,
Makes solid and manifest as matter, as all things we are aware of?
Letting them manifest in our free awareness field, and thus
Shine forth as its very self-manifestation - and yours?
For what is
Your ownmost, innermost
Most divine Self, if it is not the constant
Shimmering, shining forth of the free awareness field itself,
The very air of awareness itself that we can each breathe freely?
This awareness is not frozen or fixated by any-thing in the world, for
It envelops and pervades all possible things, all possible worlds.
It is that Self which is no thought and no-thing, and yet
Which is not nothing, for it is all possible
Qualities of Awareness itself.
Free to be them all.
16
WHAT IS KNOWING?
(with special acknowledgements to Andrew Gara)
17
Awareness is not just
Knowing what you are doing
Whenever you do it, and whatever it is, but
BEING AWARE of every aspect of your immediate, bodily and sensory
Experience of doing it, and of all the thoughts behind or
Accompanying that AWARE EXPERIENCING of action.
Awareness is not
Mental, verbal or intellectual knowing.
It is not even unaware, tacit or silent knowing.
It is the other way round.
True knowing is
AWARENESS.
18
Only if you are aware
Of what you think you know,
Can you truly know that which
You are aware of.
Ultimate truth is
KNOWING AWARENESS.
This knowing awareness is
Not simply an awareness of things.
It is that primordial awareness
Which is the very source of
All things and all beings;
Of all there is to be
Aware of, and all
That is and can
Be known.
19
WHAT ARE AWARENESS & CONSCIOUSNESS?
20
Whenever our attention gets
Focussed or fixated on any one thing
We are experiencing or conscious of,
We lose AWARENESS.
Unlike consciousness,
AWARENESS is not focussed on
Any one thing we consciously experience.
Awareness is more like the SPACE
Surrounding us and all things
We experience within it;
Inseparable and yet
Distinct from them.
Consciousness is
Ego-awareness, an awareness
Focussed on or identified with some
Element of our experience.
To be AWARE
Does not mean watching,
Observing or witnessing the
Contents of our consciousness
For that would imply a second,
Split-off, witnessing self.
21
The Self that is truly
AWARE is not an alter-ego
Or second self that has or possesses
Awareness as its private property.
It IS awareness.
Self-awareness
is not the property of
Any ego, I or self that
We can experience - any EXPERIENCED self.
Instead it is the EXPERIENCING self that is nothing but
AWARENESS itself and as such - an awareness that embraces
Every possible self or I we can experience and
Every possible content of consciousness,
Whilst at the same time transcending
All such contents of consciousness.
For it is nothing but the pure
AWARENESS
Of them.
22
WHAT IS THE BODY?
23
WHAT BODY IS IT?
What body is it
That feels inwardly closer
Or more distant to others,
However near or far they are
In space and time?
What body is it
With which we sense another persons
Inner warmth or coolness of feeling,
And our own?
What body is it
With which we sense
The levity or weighty gravity,
Lightness or heaviness
Brightness or darkness.
Of a persons moods,
And of our own?
What body is it
That now feels light and airy
Now meltingly warm and fluid
Now heavy and dense?
What body is it
With which we feel high or low
Uplifted, down, or beside ourselves
At home in our bodies, spaced out,
Or confined in our skins,
As in a cage?
24
What body is it
With which we feel
Drawn out of ourselves, or
Into which we feel withdrawn into ourselves,
As if into some warm and nurturing womb
Or else some cold and solitary
Prison or tomb?
What body is it
Whose felt surface boundary can
Seem to expand or contract from within,
Rigidify or loosen from within, feeling like
A sensitive and vulnerable skin,
A tight and constrictive skin,
A porous, breathing skin,
A rubbery diving suit,
Or a loose-fitting
Garment?
What body is it
That can feel like
A grey will o the wisp,
Or a translucent and
Multi-coloured
Raiment?
25
What is this body which
We can each feel in all
These many different ways?
It is our inwardly felt body
It is our Feeling Body.
The body with which
We feel ourselves,
And others too.
26
What body is it
That both in-forms
And survives the flesh?
It is our awareness body,
Our soul body.
27
WHAT ARE YOU?
28
WHO ARE YOU?
29
WHAT IS THE SOURCE OF AWARENESS?
Are we aware
By virtue of our having
Minds and bodily sense organs, or
Because we have thoughts and perceptions,
Emotions and sensations, or because
We experience diverse impulses
Urges, pleasures
Or pains?
Is awareness
A by-product of our bodies and brain?
Or are our bodies themselves all bodies in space
But the bodily shapes taken by our field of awareness
The field or feel-d of our feeling awareness of other beings?
Do we feel because we have bodies and brains,
But because we are feeling beings?
Because
Our bodies are
The fleshly embodiment
Of all that we feel, within and around us.
The bodying and embodiment of
Our feeling awareness, our
Field awareness, our
Free awareness
Field.
30
No body,
Even our own,
Can possibly be perceived
Except by appearing within a field of awareness.
How then can awareness be localised in our bodies or brains,
When all bodies are but localised perceptual
Shapes, tones and qualities of awareness,
Taking shape in fields of awareness.
Visible only in the light of our awareness?
Awareness is
Not a blank mirror,
Not an empty vessel,
A void waiting to be filled with
Sensations and perceptions,
Emotions and
thoughts.
31
Awareness
Has its own felt,
Sensual qualities of
Lightness or heaviness.
Brightness or darkness,
Spacious openness
Or closedness.
Warmth or
Coolness.
Our field of
Feeling awareness
Brightens and darkens,
Expands and contracts,
Dulls or sharpens
Like a sound,
It is coloured by those
Feeling tones we call moods,
Those felt tonalities of awareness,
That colour the whole way we feel ourselves,
The way we feel other people, experience.
The world around us, and
And each object
In it.
32
Awareness
Has its own innate
Spatiality and substantiality,
Sometimes felt as diffuse and airy.
Other times as viscous and fluid.
Light and fiery or dense or solid.
This elemental substantiality
Of awareness, is the very
Matter of mind,
MANA.
33
WHAT IS THINKING?
34
Just as having thoughts fixates our awareness on things,
So does reasoning fixate our thoughts on other thoughts.
35
And we can experience that field of pure awareness
As the divine source of all thoughts - and of all things.
36
See how things glisten and shine in that light.
Recognise them as expressions of that light.
37
WHAT IS FEELING?
If we cannot
Feel any part of our body.
We can feel no other body with it.
If we cannot feel our body as a whole.
Then nor can we feel
Some-body else.
Feeling is not
Something bounded
By our physical body or skin.
Just looking at a distant object, we also
Feel the way it would feel to our touch.
Seeing it at a distance, we also
Feel its surface texture,
Its material density.
The tone it would
Make if struck.
38
Our feeling body is a field body.
The spacious field of our feeling awareness.
With it we can feel the space behind us, and those
Beneath and beside us, no less than those before our eyes.
With it, we can feel the presence of nearby objects.
Like the blind, who feel their way through space.
Whose seeing is a feeling sight.
39
WHAT IS THE FIELD?
What is
The Field?
The Field is the Feel-d
It is not an energy field.
The Feeld is the spacious field of our
Feeling awareness of ourselves and others,
Of our own bodies, and of all other bodies in space.
It is the very space of our feeling awareness,
The field of our feeling awareness.
It is a feeling-field.
It is quite simply
space, as we
Feel it.
40
WHAT IS THE SOUL?
The only
Boundary of the soul is
A field-boundary of awareness
That enables us to feel our
Own insideness and
outsideness.
Yet all
That we see outside us
Is also something we can feel within.
Our inwardly felt body is the soul body
With which we feel our own
Insideness and
Outsidenes.
41
But within ourselves.
It is through feeling others
With our selves, we come to feel
Our own other selves.
42
WHAT ARE MIND AND BODY?
The soul
Is not the mind.
It is the resonant inwardness of
Both mind and body,
Word and flesh.
The soul
Is not the body.
The body is the speech of the soul
Its inner word or logos become flesh.
With our souls we inwardly
Sound, speak and sing
Our fleshly bodies
Into being, thus
Bodying our
Being.
Psychology
Is the logos of the psyche.
Its sounding, singing word or speech
Psycho-logy is
soul-speech.
43
Soul-speech is that
Living language of the soul, by which
We quite literally utter our own bodies.
Soul-speech is a language of inner soul sounds.
These soul sounds cannot be uttered with the body.
They are the sounds with which we utter our bodies.
Outer sounds are shapings of vibratory tone.
Inner sounds are shapings of
Inner feeling tone.
44
If the body of a word is its sound,
Then the soul of that word is its sense.
This sense is its inner sound or resonance.
The word of the soul is a body of inner sound.
Every visible body is a three-dimensional sound.
It is a word shaped by the speech of the soul.
Inner sense or meaning materialised
As sense-perceptible matter,
Through inner sound.
45
WHAT IS MINDFULNESS?
46
WHAT IS MEDITATION?
What is meditation?
Is it sitting cross-legged, straight-backed
Eyes closed, trying and maybe failing - not to think?
Seeking to concentrate inwardly, single-pointedly,
Free of the distractions of your senses, of
Your mind and body?
47
Meditation does not need you to
Free yourself from body, mind or the senses.
For awareness of your body is not itself anything bodily.
Just as awareness of mind is not itself anything mental.
Just as awareness of a thought is not itself a thought.
And awareness of a thing is not itself a thing.
Instead awareness itself is thought-free,
Sense-free and body-free.
Meditation is a pure,
Bodiless awareness of your body.
A pure thought-free awareness of your thoughts.
A pure impulse and desire-free awareness of your desires
A pure action-free awareness of action.
And a pure sense-free awareness of
All things bright and beautiful,
And all things dark and ugly.
Meditation is not
Something you need set aside times to do.
For there is nothing you need do to meditate,
Except give yourself time to be aware -
At any time, and for as long a time
As you can sustain.
48
Meditation means fully
Opening yourself to the space around you,
Whilst staying within yourself.
Meditation is not
Single-pointed concentration, but
Expanding your awareness to more fully
Embrace all possible focal points of attention,
Both within and around you, yet without need for
Single-minded concentration on
Any one focus of attention.
Meditation means
Taking time to give yourself more space,
To feel more free awareness space within and around you,
It means identifying with the seeming emptiness of space.
It means living and dwelling in pure awareness
As you live and dwell in space itself.
49
This is the secret of meditation
Guarded in the tantras, the secret called
Khechari Mudra identifying with the space,
Within and around all things, and
Within and around you.
50
WHAT IS GOD?
51
WHAT IS GOD TO YOU?
The ultimate answer to the question
Who are you? is, quite simply - You are God.
For just as God gave birth to human beings in His dreaming awareness,
So are human beings destined to give rebirth to Him in theirs.
God dreams Himself anew through all the gods, old and new
That are ever dreamt up within the human soul.
The gods are the dreamings of human beings
Through which God Himself is
Destined to recreate Himself
Through each and all of us,
Within each and all of us,
As each and all of us.
Your destiny therefore, is not to
Become One with God but to become God.
For that is what every being most essentially is,
Being composed of the stuff of which dreams are made,
That God-stuff of awareness that is
The divine light of Lord Shiva
In its infinite shapes, tones and colours.
Yet for us to be able to recreate God through
Our human experiences of the divine awareness,
Through the divine dreamings of our human souls,
He Himself had once to become flesh.
That is the deepest meaning of
The Christian Son of God.
The one who declared
I am Shiva,
Je-Shiva.
52
WHAT IS THE GENDER OF GOD?
God is neither
Male nor Female.
God is a Relation.
The elements of that relation.
However we might name them:
Masculine and Feminine,
God and Goddess
Shiva and Shakti
Do not precede the Relation.
It is the Relation that first gives them their Reality.
There has never, can never be
A God without a Goddess as consort,
A Goddess without a God as consort.
There have never been Gods or Goddesses
Except in and as their Relation to one another.
Shiva-Shakti is not a relation of two
Separate, pre-existing beings.
Brought together by a mere hyphen.
For whilst distinct,
They are inseparable.
The hyphen in Shiva-Shakti
Is their dynamic relation,
It is what they are.
As God.
53
WHAT ARE THE POWERS OF AWARENESS?
Awareness feels.
Awareness fills space.
Awareness flows in currents.
Awareness forms itself into bodies.
Awareness conveys itself without words.
Awareness vibrates with its own potentialities.
Awareness creatively releases those potentialities.
Awareness experiences itself as space, light and matter.
Awareness manifests its potentials as all experienced reality.
Awareness reveals its innate qualities in the forms of all things.
Awareness individualises itself in the experience of all beings.
Awareness finds its reflection in the experience of all beings.
Awareness frees us from identification with our experience.
Awareness divines itself as the divine self of every being.
Awareness divinises the self-experience of every being.
Awareness uncovers higher worlds and higher beings.
Awareness dissolves all experiences back into itself.
Awareness is what gives time to be aware.
Awareness enfills and enfolds all things.
Awareness transcends all things.
These are the power Shaktis
Of Awareness Shiva.
54
WHAT IS ELEMENTAL MATTER?
55
The soul of sound is the sounding of the soul
The primordial toning of awareness Om.
Through sensing
The inner soul of fire, we
Can feel that fire of soul by which we can
Transform its elements, and matter itself
Into the eternal flame of spirit.
Transubstantiation.
Spirit is flame,
The soul of fire and fire of soul.
The flame of awareness.
Burning eternal.
56
WHAT IS PRANA?
57
When our awareness flows with wind or river,
- that is prana.
When we experience the soul of the elements, of fire, air, water and
earth, as the fire, air, water or earth of our own soul
- that is prana.
58
Time is the presencing of things in awareness.
Space is co-presence of things in awareness.
Time-space their co-presencing in awareness.
59
Space and time are nothing separate.
They are a singular time-space of awareness,
Embracing past, present and future.
WHAT IS AWARENESS?
Awareness is bliss.
Awareness is the self.
Awareness is freedom.
Awareness is the divine.
Awareness is all that there is.
Awareness is the sole absolute.
Awareness is light, space and time.
Awareness is the substance of matter.
Awareness is the inwardness of energy.
Awareness surrounds and permeates all things.
Awareness cannot be explained by any thing at all.
Awareness is the condition for our experience of any thing.
Awareness is ultimate reality, the source and essence of all realities.
60
WHAT IS GURU?
61
WHAT IS THE DIVINE AWARENESS?
In the awareness of every person, and all that they are aware of
There dwells the Divine Awareness.
The Divine Awareness is that which sets all things free to just Be,
In the absolute abandon of its unbounded creativity.
That is why, in every power, benign or malign
There dwells the Divine Awareness.
62
Even in every limitation, contraction or diminution of the Divine
Awareness There dwells the Divine Awareness.
63
WHAT ARE THE GODS?
Guru will teach you to hear, see, sense and feel differently.
If you look at a paving stone, is all that you see a paving stone?
Guru will teach you to see, hear, sense and feel differently.
To see just a paving stone when you look at a paving stone is like
Just seeing a painting or seeing a Turner when you look at a painting.
In that way you do not see the painting at all.
64
Vishnu is that which preserves and sustains
The material matrix of the actual paving stone, in resonance with the
creative womb and seed-pattern of potentiality from which it emerged.
The several Gods are neither many nor one, for whilst they are distinct
They are also inseparable, a singular multiplicity and a multiple
singularity.
But where are these Gods? Wherein lies their true abode?
It lies here, in this very paving stone.
It lies here, in every this.
65
Nor find the Gods within them.
Guru is (s)he alone who teaches people to
See and sense things for what they are and to
BE what they are in all Their divinity.
Yet if and when you meet Guru, will you merely see a guru, or
Will you see, sense and thrill at what makes this man or woman Guru,
The thrill of divine seeing and sensing?
Will you come to recognise that your every limb and organ,
Thought and feeling, fear and doubt, hope and despair, pain and
Pleasure is, like the paving stone, all the Gods made manifest in you.
That you yourself are made of God-stuff?
66
Will you be able to bow down before
These manifold Gods of the Paving Stone saying
Obeisance to Brahman, who is the creative seed of all that is.
Obeisance to Mother Kali, who is the boundless womb of all that is.
Obeisance to her Shaktis, who ARE every thing within and around us.
Obeisance to Lord Vishnu, who IS that which preserves them all for us.
Obeisance to Lord Shiva, who IS the light of universal awareness
In which alone all things can come to light for us to delight in.
To you all, I bow down and prostrate myself
Knowing you as my very Body
My very Self?
67
WHAT IS OUR PRAYER?
Oh Great Mother,
MAHADEVI, DRGDEVI, MA KALI
Black Goddess of death and time.
In this, your time, your KALI YUGA,
Mankind does still conjugate
Through blood and hate.
The centuries are
Written in it.
Who would
Remove all dis-ease from the body,
Remove all pain and anguish from the soul,
Remove all bliss and sensual pleasure from the spirit,
Remove all depths of wordless knowledge from the word,
And create a world of sterile health and worthless wealth.
Let them then calculate, accumulate and be cursed.
For in this, your time, your Kali Yuga.
They no longer know your face.
They have not the eyes
To see and love you.
Oh Great Mother,
68
As the humble Lord Shiva himself,
I prostrate myself beneath your feet.
Feigning a white and lifeless corpse, but
Knowing the illusion of death.
And feeling the bliss of
The greater life
Within you.
Oh Mother,
We hear your call
And heed your command
To reveal your true face to the world!
Grant us then all of your devious cunning
So that we, your devoted servants,
Can once again wield your
Serpent power.
Oh Mother,
Give us the will to
Fill the hearts and souls of
Women and men with countless delights.
And, with single strokes of your mighty axe
To cleave the heads off all those false gods
Who would rule the world with calculation,
Ignorant of your fearless compassion.
Your deep dark powers, your many
Secrets untold, and your lover
The Lord Shiva.
69
WHAT IS PUJA?
Before him and for him, with and within him, in him and as him.
I have lit the primordial flame of The Great Lord, that burns forever.
I have let my awareness rise as his incense to the heights of his sky.
I have felt his lingam within me as the core and essence of all things.
I have seen and heard all things as expressions of his divine activity.
I have let go of all sense of agency separate from that of the Great Lord.
70
I have performed Puja for the Lord, for and before, with and within Him.
71
WHAT IS THE SHIVA LINGAM?
A simple stone
Is a miraculous thing.
Seemingly insentient, it is in truth
A dense and compact materialisation of
Pure awareness that is Shiva, both manifesting and
Reflecting the pure light of awareness
That pervades all of space.
72
A simple, single stone, selected
For its solid density and simplicity of form and colour,
Whether colourless black, absorbing all light, or bearing a
Shining surface that reflects the light and all things around it,
Can, by virtue of its simplicity of form become a symbol of the formless,
Pure awareness that is Shiva taking form in the most compact way.
Then the stone ceases to be just one single thing among others
In universal space, but can be thought, seen and sensed AS
The entire universe, and AS a compact mass of that
Singular, universal awareness that is Shiva.
73
WHAT IS LIBERATION?
74
Yet whenever we 'own' a thought, feeling or
Any aspect of our experience as 'mine' or as 'me'
We no longer experience the Divine, forgetting that
'Our' very experience of self is ITS experience, not 'ours'.
For awareness of self does not belong to any self we are aware of.
Nor is it bound to any self we are aware of, except that
Divine Self which does not possess but IS awareness,
Unbound and unbounded, liberated and free.
75
For the deluded self that believes it 'possesses' the experiences
That first endow it with a sense of self, the ultimate sacrifice to God,
The leap to liberation, is fraught with terror, for the ego identifies
Surrender of self-possession with loss of self and ultimate non-being.
That is why the Divine also has the Tantric face and name of
BHAIRAV - 'The Terrifying One' - and why being 'God-fearing' can
Mean just that, fearing to face the delusory terror of non-being that
The leap into Moksha - liberation - demands of all who take it.
76
They can go their way - but behind their spiritual repose
You may find a great terror in the face of BHAIRAV,
That face of the Divine beloved of Tantrikas?
To whom surrender brings total autonomy.
77
WHAT IS THE SUPREME SELF?
78
Shakti is the Para-atman,
The Supreme Self of the actress,
Being not just one self that can be acted but all.
Being not just one part that can be played but all,
That Self, which is therefore truly whole
And no mere part at all.
Do you see
The acted self or the acting self,
The experienced self or the experiencing self?
Do you see the Jiva-atman or the Para-atman?
And can you also see the Other in the One,
See the acting self that is Shiva,
In your acted self or Jiva?
79
Look again
In both mirrors, outer and inner,
And ask which self it is you identify with most.
You may simply say yourself, as if you had but one.
Yet I ask you again, which self is it that you mean?
That Self that can identify with all selves
Or, like an actress with only one part,
Is identified with one self alone,
The one you call yours?
80
It is Shiva
Who acts the role of both,
Guru and Disciple, Saviour and Saved,
Healer and Healed, Teacher and Taught.

I have learnt to feel the soul qualities manifest in all sensory things.
I have experienced the sublime sensuality of the souls inner senses.
I have entered the soul-inwardness of countless colours and material forms.
I have put my awareness into trees and blades of grass, air and wind.
Into clouds and sea, fire and light, wood and metal, mortals and gods.
I have turned my awareness into space and air, warmth and light, fire and ice.
I have shape-shifted into countless forms and revealed their countenances.
I have filled the bodies of others with my soul, filled my body with theirs.
I have melded and merged my soul-body with those of others.
I have become a body of air and colour, space and light.
I have tasted the nectar of divine bliss.
I have known the ecstasy of divine intercourse.
I have melted in union with the Mahadevi herself.
I have entered the dark womb of her, the Great Goddess.
I have felt the unimaginable vitality of her radiant Shaktis.
I have experienced the infinite light of the Supreme Lord, Shiva.
I have become the lingam of the Mahadeva and the yoni of the Mahedevi.
I have bodied the occult power of the Black Serpent and of the Black Sun.
I have become the Lord Shiva in the terrifying countenance of Bhairava.
I have placed divine powers of the gods into the mortal bodies of others.
I have received teachings from unknown Rabbis, Shaivas and Shamans.
I have become the most darkly powerful of shamans, the Ungum-Buthu.
I have stalked the hidden animal spirits in the bodies of human beings.
I have beheld the working of angels and the massiveness of archangels.
I have learnt a new way of being from every human being I have met.
I have embodied the most ancient of gods, inhabiting statues of stone.
I have learnt the meaning of suffering and dis-ease in its many forms.
I have become the most primordial of life forms on this planet.
I have explored the innermost secrets of time and history.
I have perceived the deep inner meaning of world events.
I have bodied countless different selves in a single life.
85
I have recalled the life between lives in this very life.
I have beheld the mighty airships of higher beings.
I have touched others with invisible hands.
I have founded a true science of the soul.
My teachings have no precedent.
I approach all things anew.
I am reborn each day.

MEDITATION, MOVEMENT AND JUST SITTING
Meditation, as understood through The Awareness Principle, means simply giving time-space
to a type of wholly non-active or quiescent awareness - one not reliant on bodily movement or
action. Most Westerners however, can only feel a sense of meditative inner stillness through
movement in space.
Sitting still, they can no longer feel their body as a whole, let alone sense the space of
awareness, around it but instead begin to get lost in thought and their heads. Put in other terms,
they cannot sustain a proprioceptive awareness of their own body without sensations of physical
movement - without kinaesthetic awareness.
That is why they need to be constantly on the move - whether through any type of
physical activity involving movement of the body, or by literally moving from place to place - for
example by travelling or engaging in pursuits such as walking, jogging, swimming etc.
That is also why a notable guru of the nineteen sixties and seventies felt forced to come up
with the idea of so-called dynamic meditation effectively no form of meditation at all but a
mere means of emotional catharsis through spontaneous movement.
Kinaesthetic awareness dependent on movement does indeed awaken proprioceptive
awareness. Yet in Western culture it is, for most people, the only way they know of awakening or
sustaining proprioceptive awareness of their bodies.
In Eastern and aboriginal cultures the reverse has been traditionally the case movement
and kinaesthetic awareness are grounded in motionless stillness and proprioceptive awareness of ones
body.
As in the practice of Tai Chi and of different forms of Asian dance and martial art, Eastern
cultures value forms of bodily movement which arise out of a sense of motionless stillness - and
believe in letting this very motionless stillness guide and time their physical movement or
kinesis. Thus the most truly advanced martial artist is precisely one who does not actively move
their body at all, but rather lets it be moved moved by a proprioceptive awareness that embraces
not only their body but their sense of the entire space around their body.
It is because the kinaesthetic awareness of the martial artist is already so highly trained that
all they require to guide their physical movements is a meditative, motionless proprioceptive
awareness.
Sitting meditation on the other hand, teaches people how to move in a different way to
move from one location or place to another in themselves - not with their physical body but within
their inwardly felt body.
Strictly speaking this is not movement at all but awareness awareness of the many different
sensations and feelings and thoughts that are presencing or occurring in different regions or
locations of their body. It is awareness too, of the relation of these sensations or feelings,
whether subtle or intense, to the thoughts they are having and to the things or people they are
connected with in their world.
The principle aim of sitting meditation is to learn how to be physically still whilst still
sustaining awareness of our body as a whole and the space around it - sustaining both

knowing the cathedral as a holy place or house of God - associate this spaciousness with that
holiness and with God.
When people come together in temples, churches or mosques they are first of all aware of
being together in a common space which is recognised as sacred or holy in some way. In that
way, they knowingly or unknowingly come to an experience of space itself as divine that which
embraces all things and beings. Going to a holy place involves movement in space. Yet being there
means motionlessly abiding in that place, thus coming to experiencing its space and thereby
space itself as holy.
Again, movement or kinesis activity or change of place can be a way of awakening or
sustaining proprioceptive awareness, or it can be a way of avoiding it. Yet the question whether,
at any given moment, awareness is better sustained through movement or non-movement, can
itself only be decided by first of all not-moving by abiding in a motionless stillness.
Mountains and trees do not move from place to place, go to church, go for walks or go on
pilgrimages. Mountains will not come to Mohammed. Trees do not have eyes to see. Yet they are
the true Zen masters and yogis of nature. For not having eyes to perceive space or limbs by which
to move from place to place, they are masters at motionlessly sensing the space, light and air
around them. Indeed their proprioceptive sense of their own bodies comes from sensing their
spatiality.
The trees trunk rises towards the heights of the sky. Its roots plumb the depths of the
earth. Its branches spread and its leaves and flowers open themselves to the vaulting curvature of
the heavens above absorbing the light and air of space not through any eyes or noses, but
through their entire surface.
To be conscious is to be aware of things occurring abiding or moving - in the space
around them. To be aware of things however, is not the same as to be that very awareness. To be
awareness means to be the space, inner and outer, in which things occur, and not just be aware of
things occurring in that space. For pure awareness, in our space-time reality, is space. Being space,
we do not need to engage in activity or movement to experience time. For space is time-space. The
vaulting expanse of space is the spacious expanse of time itself a time-space that embraces all
actions and places - past, present and future - without any need for movement from one place to
another in space or one moment to another in time.

PRACTICING SITTING AS MEDITATION
Sitting meditation is essentially the experience of sitting anywhere and anytime - as meditation.
This involves 4 simple steps:
1. Sitting with your eyes open, but not looking at anything.
2. Sustaining awareness of your sensed body surface as a whole.
3. Feeling your body surface as all eye enabling you to sense the entire space within
and all around your body.
4. Letting all that you are aware of within your body in the form of sensations or feelings
and all that comes to mind in the form of thoughts and images dissipate into the space
around your body.
BODILY AND SPATIAL AWARENESS
The most fundamental Practice of Awareness is the practice of sustaining continuous
whole-body awareness throughout the day. The foundation of this whole-body awareness is
awareness of ones felt body surface as a whole. For without awareness of our surface we can feel
neither the inner space of awareness it bounds and surrounds nor the awareness that is the outer space
surrounding it these being the two distinct but inseparable aspects of the awareness space that
make up our awareness body or soul body. Surface awareness is thus the key to experiencing
whole-body awareness as soul-body awareness. Sustaining this whole-body/soul-body
awareness through spatial body awareness can only be achieved through constant mindfulness
and regular recall of the following twelve questions all of which have to do and affect how
much space one feels one has - both for oneself and for others.
MEDITATING AWARENESS AS SPACE
1.How much of my body surface am I feeling right now?
2.How much inner awareness space can I feel within this felt surface boundary?
3.Where do I feel my awareness concentrated in this inner awareness space?
4.Where do I feel my awareness centred in this inner-bodily awareness space?
5. How far down does my inner awareness space extend from the inner space of my head
through that of my chest to my lower abdomen?
6. How expansive or contracted, crowded or empty, muddied or clear, do I feel the inner
awareness space of my head, chest and abdomen?
7. To what extent do I feel the inner awareness space of head, chest and abdomen as a
singular inner space of awareness?
http://www.thenewyoga.org/mentalhealthblog/sittingmeditation.htm 1/2
06/04/2017 Meditations
8.To what extent can I lower my centre of awareness from a point in my head to points in
the inner region of my heart, diaphragm, belly and lower abdomen?
9.To what extent can I sense the entire space around my body surface?
10.How far can I feel my awareness extending into this space?
11. To what extent can I feel the entire space around me as an unbounded space of awareness
enveloping and embracing both my own body and every other body in it?
12. How permeable or impermeable do I feel the surface boundary between my inner and
outer awareness spaces - to what extent can I feel my surface boundary as either a porous
in-breathing membrane or as a sealed self-containing boundary?

10 STEPS - FROM BEING AWARE TO BEING AWARENESS
1. Be aware whenever you find yourself thinking or saying to yourself or others I am. For
example, I am lonely/depressed/anxious/afraid/
angry/bitter/worthless/trapped/frustrated/resentful/ashamed/unworthy
/ugly/unloved/guilty/bad/mad, a failure etc.
2. Fill in the blank from the words I am with your own choice of negative words.
3. Now replace the word am with the words feel and think and say to yourself I feel ... and
think I am [fill in your own words]. Do not follow the words I feel with an emotional label
but with a description of your direct bodily sensation of the feeling. Example: I feel a fluttering in
my chest which makes me think I am anxious.
4. In order not to identify with your feelings and thoughts now remove the word I. Rather than
saying to yourself I feel , I think or I am say There is an awareness of feeling which
makes me think I am [fill in your own words]. Again, do not label the feeling as an emotion
but describe how you feel it as a bodily sensation.
5. Be aware of your body as a whole and of your overall mood and sense of yourself for it is out of
this overall bodily sense of yourself that your thoughts and feelings arise.
6. Feelings and thoughts about reality are not reality. Feelings and thoughts about yourself are not
your whole self or true self. So whenever you are aware of saying I am remind yourself that I
am not this feeling of or I am not this thought that .
7. Instead say: I am the awareness of feeling or thinking or There is an awareness of feeling
or thinking . Make it a rule to use the following mantras: There is an awareness of thinking
or feeling ... or I am the awareness of feeling or thinking ...
8. Identifying with a thing or thought, feeling or belief unawares - is one thing. Being aware of
that thing or thought, feeling or belief and of the self that is identified with it is another. The
point is to be that very awareness and not anything you are aware of.
9. Whenever you feel preoccupied with disturbing thoughts or feelings, identify with empty
space. For empty space, like pure awareness, is distinct from everything we are aware of within it
- whether things or thoughts, sensations or feelings, impulses or actions.
10. Regularly take time to be fully aware of and affirm all the sensations, feelings, thoughts or life-
concerns you are aware of. But do not identify with them. Instead, attend to and sense the spaces
within and around you and say the following mantras to yourself I am nothing that I am aware
of in space. I am space itself. I am nothing I am aware of. I am the pure awareness of it. Only by

regularly taking time to be aware can we open up a larger space of awareness one in which new
thoughts and feelings, a new sense of yourself and a new relation to the world and other people
can and will arise spontaneously. This is the basic life discipline, practice or yoga of awareness.

ASPECTS OF THE PRACTICE OF AWARENESS
1.BEING AWARE
Taking all the time necessary to be aware of all you are experiencing inwardly and outwardly, and
of every distinct element of your experiencing, from thoughts and feelings, to somatic sensations
and every element of your sensory environment.
2.BODILY AWARENESS
Attending to the immediate bodily dimension of all that you are aware of experiencing - where
and how you feel different things you perceive or are aware of in an immediate sensual,
proprioceptive and bodily way.
3. BODYING AWARENESS
Giving some form of authentic bodily expression to your awareness, for example through your
posture, the tilt of your body or head, the look on your face or in your eyes, the tone or tempo of
your voice thus amplifying, bodying and silently communicating your awareness of it.
4. UNBOUNDING YOUR AWARENESS
Reminding yourself that your bodily awareness of your body is not itself bounded by your body,
but is an unbounded bodiless awareness that permeates your body, all of space and every body in
it.
5. BEING-IN-AWARENESS
You dwell IN awareness as you dwell in space itself. Being-in-Awareness is a way of Being
Awareness, by not identifying with what you are aware of, but identifying instead with the very
spaces of awareness, inner and outer, in which you experience them.
6. BREATHING AWARENESS
Expanding the breathing space of your awareness by giving yourself time to be aware of the way
you are - or are not breathing, by shifting your awareness TO your breathing, and experiencing
it as a breathing OF awareness feeling yourself breathing your awareness of the entire sensory
space around you through your chest surface, felt as open and porous.
7. BEING AWARENESS
Being-in, Bodying and Breathing awareness are paths that lead from Being Aware to Being
Awareness. Being Awareness means affirming and feeling the meaningfulness of all that you are
aware of, whilst not identifying with it but instead identifying with the very awareness of it
BEING that awareness instead of BINDING your awareness to what you are aware of. To BE
awareness is to be the all-round SPACE, inner and outer, in which you experience things -
including your own body. To identify with AWARENESS as such is to identify with SPACE as
such.
8.UNBINDING AWARENESS
Each time you become aware of experiencing something new, step back once again into Being
Awareness in order to UNBIND your awareness from it thus continuing both to Be Aware and
to Be Awareness rather than letting your awareness become BOUND by anything you are aware
of.
9.BEING-IN-AWARENESS WITH OTHERS
http://www.thenewyoga.org/mentalhealthblog/AspectsPractice.htm 1/2
06/04/2017 AspectsofthePracticeofAwareness
Relating in a meditative way by using every encounter as an opportunity to give yourself time to
Be Aware of others, to Breathe in your awareness of them, and to feel the space around you both
as a space of awareness in which you can both Be in Awareness together.
10.ATTAINING AWARENESS BLISS
The bliss that arises from recognising that you are not a being with awareness but that you ARE
awareness part of the unbounded awareness that IS God. Awareness Bliss is only attained
through Being Aware, Being and Bodying Awareness, Breathing Awareness, and Being in
Awareness with others, - breathing the divine awareness that both you and others are.

EXPANDING SPATIAL AWARENESS
Note: this meditation is to be practiced in the true tantric manner attending to your inner
space but with your eyes still open. This is so that you can stay aware of the entire space around
you (Bhairava Mudra), expanding your awareness into that space and experiencing everything in
it as an expression of it. This practice of Khechari Mudra uniting the Kingdom outside with the
Kingdom inside - is the key to all the miraculous Siddhis exercised by great Yogis, Gurus and
Avatars.
1. Bring your awareness to the inwardly sensed surface of your chest and body as a whole.
From that surface sense the empty spaces in front of, above, behind and to either side of
your body.
2. Attend entirely to your awareness of regions of empty space - those above and around
your body, and those above, around and between other bodily objects or people.
3. Be aware of the sky above and of the unlimited expanse of cosmic space, and of all empty
regions of space in your immediate vicinity or scope of vision.
4. Sense all regions of empty space as part of an unlimited space of pure awareness a space
totally untainted by any psychical qualities, be they the atmosphere of places, the aura of
people and the mood or space you or others may feel themselves in.
5. Feel your body surface again, this time sensing a hollow space of pure awareness within it
a space equally untainted by any thoughts, feelings or sensations you experience within it.
6. Identify with the spaces of awareness around and between all that you experience outside
and inside you the space around and between your thoughts, emotions and physical
sensations, the space around and between your body and other bodies.
7. Attend to your breathing, and feel yourself breathing in the luminous translucency of the
space around you, first through your chest and body surface as a whole - experiencing this
as a breathing of pure awareness.
http://www.thenewyoga.org/mentalhealthblog/expandingspatialawareness.htm 1/2
06/04/2017 ExpandingSpatialAwareness
8. Feel your chest and body surface as an open, porous, in-breathing skin or membrane
uniting a content-free space of pure awareness within you with the empty space of pure
awareness surrounding your own body and all other bodies.

The relation between awareness as such and all that we are

perception is itself a specific mode of awareness a patterned
awareness of sensory qualities such as colour, sound, shape,

prove to us that things exist out there. For our brains and sense
organs are themselves things we know about only because we can
perceive them. Perception is no more something caused or

some particular thing we dream of. Seeing, for example, cannot be

Q. Doesnt physics tell us that behind all that we perceive with our
senses are electromagnetic energies, and that it is from these our

A. Yes, but remember that our sensory awareness gives us no
evidence whatsoever of the existence of these energies, which are
notthingsinthemselvesbutabstractconceptsusedbyphysicsto
explain things. And since all the concepts of physics refer to
mathematical quantities they cannot in principle explain our
subjective awareness of any sensory qualities at all for example
our awareness of qualities of colour or sound, taste or texture, or
even such basic sensory qualities such as light and darkness or
warmth and coolness. Sensory qualities that we take for granted as
real through the evidence of our senses colour for example
actually have no place in what physics conceives as objective
reality. That is because no evidence for their existence can ever be
found except as qualities of subjective experiencing. The quantities

Aninterestingquestion.Thoughalmostimpossiblydifficulttoanswerinbrief
allow me to offer this initial response. To begin with of course, Pure
Awareness, as absolute subjectivity neither has objects nor is an object in
itself. Thus it is also not the objective basis of anything but rather the
subjectivebasisofeverything.
Whilsteverythingthatexistsoriseverybeingisashapetakenbypure
awareness, pure awareness as such is not itself a being let alone a human
being and in this sense transcends all human concepts of good and evil,

of what human beings consider moral good given that no beings are in
any innately evil in their values, intents or potentials. It is only the
(temporarily) blocked or distorted human expression or enactment of
particular values through moral concepts and belief systems, in particularly
those based on a moral dualism of good versus evil that, paradoxically,
actually gives rise to what human beings morally perceive or experience as
evil. Paradoxically also, evil is thus only transcended and overcome by

SCIENCE
SNAPSHOT
This is the first in a two-part series that presents a summary of the Vedic theory of consciousness within a framework
Close[x]
of contemporary scientific concepts.
Consciousness is described as the ultimate mystery in ancient Indian texts, and its study is lauded as the highest science.
But until recently, the question of consciousness was considered to lie outside of the scope of science and, consequently,
the references in the Indian texts to consciousness have not been examined for their significance to the history of science
in India. But before a chronology of the ideas related to consciousness can be developed, it is essential to understand
their scientific significance and separate what can be correlated with the emerging insights of cognitive science from the
more speculative philosophical and religious thought.
Scientific attitudes towards consciousness have changed due to the recent advances in neurophysiology and because
modern physics and computer science are confronted with the question of the nature of the observer. In many ways, the
study of consciousness is centre-stage in the discussions of modern science. On the other hand, a considerable part of
Indian thought is devoted to the question of consciousness.
Although a part of this tradition deals with philosophical issues, there are other aspects, as in yoga and tantra, that deal
with structural aspects. Books such as Yogavasistha and Tripurarahasya claim to describe the nature of consciousness.
The same is generally true of various works on yoga, the Upanishads, and even the earlier Vedic texts.
The task for the historian of science is to sketch an evolution of the ideas related to consciousness, and see how this
sketch fits with the development of other scientific ideas. Since Indian works related to consciousness have not yet been
systematically examined, it is perhaps premature to write such a history.
Note that there are intriguing parallels between the insights of the early Vedic theory of consciousness and those of
quantum mechanics and neuroscience. In the Vedic theory, which dates back to at least 2000 BC, one views awareness in
terms of the reaction that the hardware of the brain provides to an underlying illuminating or awareness principle called
the self. This approach allows one to separate questions of the tools of awareness, such as vision, hearing and the mind,
from the person who obtains this awareness.
The person is the conscious self, who is taken to be a reservoir of infinite potential. But the actual capabilities of the
animal are determined by the neural hardware of its brain. This hardware may be compared to a mirror. The hardware of
the human brain represents the clearest structure to focus the self, which is why humans are able to perform in ways that
other animals cannot. Within the framework of this theory, humans and other animals are persons and their apparent
behavioural distinctions arise from the increased cloudedness of the neural hardware of the lower animals. Self-
awareness is an emergent phenomenon which is grounded on the self and the associations stored in the brain.
From a modern scientific viewpoint, living systems are dynamic structures that are defined in terms of their interaction
with their environment. Their behaviour is taken to reflect their past history in terms of instincts. Living systems can also
be defined recursively in terms of living sub-systems.
Thus, for ants, one may consider their society, an ant colony, as a living superorganism; in turn, the ant's sub-systems are
also living. Such a recursive definition appears basic to all life. Machines, on the other hand, are based on networking of
elements so as to instrument a well-defined computing procedure, and they lack a recursive self definition.
The reality of consciousness is evident not only from the fact that responses are different in sleepwalking and awake
states, but from the considerable experimentation with split-brain patients.
The experiments of Kornhuber indicate that it takes about eight-tenths of a second for the readiness potential to build up
in the brain before voluntary action begins. According to Libet, the mind extrapolates back in time by about half a second
or so the occurrence of certain events. So consciousness is not an epiphenomenon. As it possesses a unity, it should be
described by a quantum mechanical wave function.

Eugene Wigner argued that the laws of quantum mechanics may not apply to conscious agents. In a variant of the setting
of the Schrodinger cat experiment, he visualised two conscious agents, one inside the box and another outside. If the
inside agent makes an observation that leads to the collapse of the wave function, then how is the linear superposition of
the states for the outside observer to be viewed? Wigner argued that in such a case, with a conscious observer as part of
the system, linear superposition must not apply.
This result, now called the Wigner's friend paradox, and others have led many quantum theorists to argue that basic
advances in physics would eventually require one to include consciousness in the scientific framework. The Vedic system,
which was an earlier attempt to unify knowledge, was confronted by similar paradoxes. It is well known that
Schrodinger's development of quantum mechanics was inspired, in part, by Vedanta, the full-blossomed Vedic system.
His debt to the Vedic views is expressed in an essay he wrote in 1925 before he created his quantum theory:
Schrodinger used Vedic ideas also in his immensely inuential book What is Life? which played a significant role in the
development of modern biology.
According to his biographer Walter Moore, there is a clear continuity between Schrodinger's understanding of Vedanta
and his research:
In view of this connection between the Vedic system and quantum mechanics and the fact that quantum mechanical
models of consciousness are being attempted, it is important to see how the Vedic philosophers developed their
classificatory models of consciousness. A summary of one classificatory model is the main focus of this piece.
The question of the history of ideas related to the notion of consciousness in ancient India will also be touched upon
briefly in this paper.
Neural network models have been used by cognitive scientists to model behaviour.
The limitations of neural models have been highlighted by Sacks and others who point out that these models do not take
into account the notion of self.
The limitations of current theories of psychology were well-summarised by the distinguished Canadian psychologist
Melzack :

Cognitive abilities arise from a continuing reflection on the perceived world, and this question of reflection is central to
the brain-mind problem, the measurement problem of physics, and the problem of determinism and free-will. A dualist
hypothesis to explain brain-mind interaction or the process of reflection meets with the criticism that this violates the
conservation laws of physics. On the other hand, a brain-mind identity hypothesis, with a mechanistic or electronic
representation of the brain processes, does not explain how self-awareness could arise. At the level of ordinary
perception, there exists a duality and complementarity between an autonomous (and reflexive) brain and a mind with
intentionality.
Complementarity
The notion of self seems to hinge on an indivisibility akin to that found in quantum mechanics. The wave-particle duality
encountered in quantum phenomena led Neils Bohr in 1927 to introduce the notion of complementarity.
Complementarity is the principle that description of reality in any of the mutually contradictory pictures is incomplete;
but between them such pictures form a complete, complementary description. This principle also presupposes that
experiments can be unambiguously described only in classical terms.
Considering the question of logical foundations of biology, Bohr concluded that life (and also cognitive) processes are
likewise subject to complementarity. The complementarity exhibited by life may be expressed most fundamentally
between structure and behaviour.
Bohr suggested an interesting analogy between neural (thought) and quantum processes. The instantaneous state of a
thought may be compared with the position of a particle, whereas the direction of change of that thought may be
compared with the particle's momentum. This is described by Bohr as follows:
There is also a similarity between the thought process and the classical limit of the quantum theory. The logical process
corresponds to the most general type of thought process, as the classical limit corresponds to the most general quantum
process. In the logical process, we deal with classifications. These classifications are conceived as being completely
separate but related by the rules of logic, which may be regarded as the analogue of the causal laws of classical physics. In
any thought process, the component ideas are not separate but flow steadily and indivisibly.

An attempt to analyse them into separate parts destroys or changes their meanings. Yet there are certain types of
concepts, among which are those involving the classification of objects, in which we can, without producing any essential
changes, neglect the indivisible and incompletely controllable connection with other ideas. Complementarity is required
at different levels of description.
But just as one might use a probabilistic interpretation instead of complementarity for atomic descriptions, a
probabilistic description may also be used for cognitive behaviour. However, such a probabilistic behaviour is inadequate
to describe the behaviour of individual agents, just as notions of probability break down for individual objects.
As an epistemological principle, complementarity has been criticised for not providing a unifying picture. But from an
operational point of view, complementarity, by considering all kinds of responses, becomes a very useful approach. When
analysed in terms of local interactions, the framework of quantum mechanics suffers from other paradoxical
characteristics. This shows up in non-local correlations that appear in the manner of action at a distance.

The Vedic notion of consciousness appears already to be in place by the time of the Rig Veda, conservatively dated to the

late third or early second millennia BC. The Rig Veda and the other Vedic books do not present a logical resolution of the
paradox of consciousness but assert that knowledge is of two types: it is superficially dual but at a deeper level it has a
unity.
The Vedic theory implies a complementarity by insisting that the material and the conscious are aspects of the same
transcendent reality. The modern scientific tradition is like the Vedic tradition since it acknowledges contradictory or
dual descriptions but seeks unifying explanations. The Vedic approach to knowledge was based on the assumption that
there exist equivalences of diverse kinds between the outer and the inner worlds. This prompted a deep examination of
the human mind.
These examinations were also considered within the frameworks of Vaisnavism as well as Shaivism. Here we speak of
only one specific development that took place in Kashmir and has come to be known as Kashmir Shaivism. The beginning
of this specific tradition is seen in the Shiva Sutras of Vasugupta (c. 800 AD). The Shiva Sutras have aphorisms such as:
ii. vidyasamutthane svabhavike khecari sivavastha (The knowledge of one's innate nature leads to Siva's state: it is like
wandering in the sky of consciousness)
Shiva is the name for the absolute or transcendental consciousness. Ordinary consciousness is bound by cognitive
categories related to conditioned behaviour. By exploring the true spring wells of ordinary consciousness one comes to
recognise its universal (Shiva). This brings the further recognition that one is not a slave (pasu) of creation but its master
(pati).
Mahakaal
According to Sankhya, reality may be represented in terms of 25 categories. These categories form the substratum of the
classification in Shaivism. These categories are:
(i) five elements of materiality, represented by earth, water, fire, air, ether;

(ii) five subtle elements , represented by smell, taste, form, touch, sound;
(iii) five organs of action, represented by reproduction, excretion, loco-motion, grasping, speech;

(v) three internal organs, being mind, ego, and intellect; and inherent nature (prakrti), and consciousness (purusa).
Already have an account?Log in
These categories dene the structure of the physical world and of agents and their minds. But this classification is not rich
enough to describe the processes of consciousness as it is mentioned as a single category. Shaivism enumerates further
characteristics of consciousness:
(vi) sheaths or limitations of consciousness, being time (kaala), space (niyati), selectivity (raga), awareness (vidya),
creativity (kala), self-forgetting (maya) and
(vii) five principles of the universal experience, which are correlation in the universal experience (sadvidya, suddhavidya),
identification of the universal (svara), the principle of being (sadakhya), the principle of negation and potentialisation
(sakti), and pure awareness by itself (siva)
The first 25 categories relate to an everyday classification of reality where the initial five characteristics relate to the
physical inanimate world, and the next 18 dene the characteristics of the conscious organism. The inherent nature of the
individual is called prakrti while purusa represents self.
The next 11 categories characterise different aspects of consciousness which is to be understood in a sense different to
that of mental capacities (categories 21, 22, 23). One of these mental capacities is akin to artificial intelligence of current
computer science, which is geared to finding patterns and deciding between hypotheses. On the other hand, categories 26
through 36 deal with interrelationships in space and time between these patterns and deeper levels of comprehension
and awareness.
Any focus of consciousness must first be circumscribed by coordinates of time and space. Next, it is essential to select a
process (out of the many defined) for attention (category 28). The aspect of consciousness that makes one have a feeling
of inclusiveness with this process, followed later by a sense of alienation is called maya (category 31). Thus maya permits
one, by a process of identification and detachment, to obtain limited knowledge (category 29) and to be creative (category
30).
How does consciousness ebb and flow between an identity of self and an identity with the processes of the universe?
According to Shaivism, a higher category (number 32) permits comprehension of oneness and separation with equal
clarity. On the other hand category 33 allows a visualisation of the ideal universe. Category 33 allows one to move beyond
mere comprehension into a will to act. The final two categories deal with the potential energy that leads to continuing
transformation (35) and pure consciousness by itself (36). Pure awareness is not to be understood as similar to everyday
awareness of humans but rather as the underlying schema that the laws of nature express. The laws themselves define
the sakti tattva.
The cognitive categories of Shaivism are of relevance in computer science. At present only a subset of these categories
can be dealt with by the most versatile computing machines. Current research is focused on the lower categories such as
endowing machines with action capacities (as in robotics) and powers of sense perception (as in vision). At the higher
levels, machines can be endowed with some capacity for judgment that typically involves computation of suitably framed
cost functions, or finding patterns, of choosing between hypotheses, but the capacities of concretisation and especially
self-awareness seem to be completely out of the realm of present day computing science.

Rig Veda 1.164.45 describes that speech and its concomitant cognition is of four kinds. The names of these kinds of
speech are described by Bhartihari (c 450 AD) in his Vakyapadya to be vaikhar, madhyama, pasyant, and para.
Vaikhar represents gross sound; madhyama is the level of mental images; pasyant represents that gestalt or
undifferentiated whole that sounds emerge from in the process of speaking and into which they merge in the process of
hearing; para is the

Bhartihari calls the word or sentence considered an indivisible meaning unit as the sphota. He bases this concept on the
Vedic theory that speech (vak) is a manifestation of the primordial reality. The word-sphota is thus contrasted from
word-sound. Meaning is obtained at a deep level based on the sequence of sounds.
The discovery of a very large number of phonetic symmetries in the first hymn of the Rig Veda that cannot be conceived
to have been deliberately introduced gives support to the thesis that language captures only some of the symmetries that
nature's intelligence can express. Peter Raster summarises this discovery thus:
In our search for phonetic symmetries in the first sukta of the Rig Veda, we examined the occurrence frequencies of more than
50 sound classes. Of these more than 40 sound classes were found with occurrence frequencies which are integral multiples of 8
and more than 20 sound classes with occurrence frequencies which are even integral multiples of 24... Moreover, in many cases,
the occurrence frequencies of phonetically related sound classes form simple integral ratios, for example, the ratio of 2:1
between the frequencies of voiced and voiceless consonants and the ratio of 1:2 between the frequencies of long and short
vowels. Thus, fundamental oppositions of the phonological system are reflected in the quantitative distribution of sounds in the
text... The order which has been found underlying the phonological structure of the text is a hidden order. It cannot be perceived
consciously while reading or listening to the text... Although the order found in the distribution of the sounds in the text is
unfolded sequentially in time, it is in itself not a linear, but a global phenomenon... [and] it is multidimensional.
Bhartihari's theory speaks of a reality richer than the expressive power of any language. Like the observables of quantum
theory, language picks only processes associated with its expressions.
The classificatory systems developed in the Indian tradition do not address the paradoxes of consciousness. Rather,
categories are defined, such as that of universal experience, which can be seen to be explain the complementary nature
of human experience. These categories clearly assign central role to selectivity, or context, and change. The Vedic system
takes the mind to be emergent on the ground of the neural hardware of the brain, but this emergence is contingent on the
principle of the self. In the earliest literature, the gods represent various cognitive centres.
Tantric texts use esoteric diagrams or yantras for their representation. There are other systems which are based on basic
sounds of the alphabet related to fundamental aspects of the mind. Such ideas have been, by tradition, consigned to
philosophy or yoga and tantra. But it is possible, indeed likely, that there is much more than speculative thought in these
models.
The ancient tradition of consciousness study in India, long limited to philosophical studies, remains an unexplored
frontier in the history of science. This is just an introduction to the problem. Further advances in a scientific
understanding of consciousness will lead to a better appreciation of the Indian literature on the subject. One hopes that a
comprehensive chronology of the various developments in the structural models of consciousness will be eventually
produced.
