UMMP GUIDELINES FOR EXAMINATION
Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya exercises reasonable care to ensure that the
information contained in this guideline is accurate at the time of preparation. If subsequent
changes are necessary, they will be incorporated online.
This guideline is issued by the Medical Education Research Development Unit and covers
quality assurance in learning and teaching for Stages 1,2, 3.1 and 3.2 Faculty of Medicine,
University of Malaya.

4. The Barrier Assessment shall be based on all themes as follows:

PART II GRADING SCHEME
1. The official University grades including the marks and their meaning are as follows:
3. Apart from the grades as stated in paragraph (a) above, the following grades may be
given to a student for any assessment attempted:
a. Grade I may be given when:
i. a student who has not taken any assessment due to medical
reasons/compassionate grounds and/or;
ii. a student who has not fulfilled a part of the assessment requirements
in a Stage due to medical/compassionate grounds or by reasons
beyond the control of the student which is acceptable to the Board of
Examiners concerned.
b. Grade I which is given has to be administered in accordance to paragraph (5);
In Section 5: Examination 5. Management of Grade I, in the University of

Malaya (First Degree Studies) Regulations 2013 herein after referred to as the
Regulations.
c. Grade S, given for an assessment for which a students performance is graded
as satisfactory based on a range of 50 - 100;
d. Grade U, given for an assessment where a students performance is graded as
unsatisfactory based on a range of 0 - 49;
e. Grade W, given for all assessments from which a student has withdrawn
officially during a particular Stage;
f. Grade W1, given for all assessments where a student has officially withdrawn
from the Stage;
g. Grade W2, given for all assessments where a student has withdrawn officially
from the University.
1. Students are deemed to have satisfactorily completed Stage 1 and are eligible to
progress to Stage 2 if they have obtained a result of Satisfactory in assessments
in ALL the 4 themes (BCS, Pt-Dr, PopMed, PPD) AND 50% in the written MCQ
assessment.

b. Students who fail to obtain a result of Satisfactory in the said
supplementary examinations shall repeat Stage 1.
1. Students are deemed to have satisfactorily completed Stage 2 and are eligible to
progress to Stage 3.1 if they have obtained a result of Satisfactory in
assessments in ALL the 4 themes (BCS, Pt-Dr, PopMed, PPD) AND 50% in the
written MCQ assessment.

4. Students who repeat Stage 2 and
a. obtain a result of Satisfactory in ALL the 4 themes during the Repeat Stage
are eligible to progress to Stage 3.1.
b. fail to obtain a result of Satisfactory in any theme during the Repeat Stage
shall be required to exit the programme.
1. Students are deemed to have satisfactorily completed Stage 3.1 and are eligible to
progress to Stage 3.2 if they have obtained a result of Satisfactory in all six
postings.
2. Students who obtained a result of Unsatisfactory in ONE of the six postings, are
deemed to have failed the Stage 3.1 and are required to repeat the particular posting
during the Supplementary Posting (Elective Posting Period).
a. Students who obtain a result of Satisfactory in the Supplementary Posting
Examination are allowed to progress to Stage 3.2.
b. Students who failed to obtain a result of Satisfactory in the Supplementary
Posting Examination are required to repeat Stage 3.1.

2. Students who obtained a result of Unsatisfactory in two (or more) of the six
postings, are deemed to have failed the Stage 3.1. The students are required to
repeat Stage 3.1.
3. Students are only allowed to repeat either Stage 3.1 OR Stage 3.2.
*For Session 2015/2016, students have to pass all assessments in Block 11: Oncology and
Palliative Care in order to progress to Stage 3.2
1. Students who have obtained a result of Satisfactory in all seven postings, are
allowed to progress to BA.
2. Students who have obtained a result of Unsatisfactory in ONE of the seven
postings, are allowed to progress to BA, and are required to repeat the particular
posting (PRINT Period) and attend the Supplementary Posting Examination [Figure
4(a)].
a. Students who have obtained a result of Satisfactory in the Supplementary
Posting Examination, are allowed to progress to PRINT (Delayed) [Figure 4(b)].
b. Students who fail to obtain a result of Satisfactory in the Supplementary
Posting Examination, are required to attend the Remedial Stage 3.2 as
decided by the Faculty.

3. Students, who fail two (or more) of the seven postings, are not allowed to progress
to BA and are deemed to have failed the Stage 3.2. The students are required to
repeat Stage 3.2.
1. Students who have obtained a result of Satisfactory in all the assessments in the BA
are allowed to progress to PRINT [Figure 4].
2. Students who have obtained a result of Unsatisfactory in any assessments in the
BA, are required to attend the Supplementary BA Examination (PRINT Period).
a. Students who have obtained a result of Satisfactory in the Supplementary
BA Examination, are allowed to progress to PRINT (Delayed).
b. Students who fail to obtain a result of Satisfactory in the Supplementary BA
Examination, are required to attend the Remedial Stage 3.2 as decided by the
Faculty.
3. Students who have obtained a result of Unsatisfactory in one posting and BA, are
required to attend the Supplementary Posting Examination and the Supplementary
BA Examination (PRINT Period) prior to progressing to PRINT (Delayed).
a. Students who have obtained a result of Satisfactory in the Supplementary
Posting Examination and the Supplementary BA Examination are allowed to
progress to PRINT (Delayed) [Figure 4(a)].
b. Students who fail to obtain a result of Satisfactory in the Supplementary
Posting Examination AND/OR the Supplementary BA Examination are
required to attend the Remedial Stage 3.2 as decided by the Faculty [Figure
4(c)].
1. Students who have obtained a result of Satisfactory in all the assessments in PRINT
are allowed to graduate.
2. Students who obtained a result of Unsatisfactory in all the assessments in PRINT,
are required to attend Remedial PRINT [Figure 4(b)].

a. Students, who have obtained a result of Satisfactory in all the assessments
in the Remedial PRINT, are allowed to progress to graduation.
a. The student has not satisfactorily completed any portion of the Stage as
determined by the Faculty of Medicine.
b. The student has attained less than 90% of attendance without justifiable
reason(s) or prior permission for leave of absence from the Dean of the
Faculty of Medicine.
c. The student has had three or more letters of misconduct for his failure to
comply to any of the following: PBL - Group Peer Assessment, Student Chair
Briefing, Students Evaluation on Tutors, PPD Teaching Evaluation Exercise, e-
Logbook, or any other requirements as deemed necessary for the various
Stages by the Faculty.
Subject to the provisions stated in the Regulations, a student who does not attend any
assessment shall be given a zero mark for any of the assessments concerned.

2. For the purpose of paragraph (1) above, any assessment which is held outside the
examination week as determined in the Calendar of Study is also considered as
Special Examination.
3. In respect of a student with physical disabilities, a student who is unable to take the
predetermined assessments,
a. the Senate may, upon the recommendation of the Faculty concerned, may
permit the replacement of such assessments with another form of
assessment in any suitable format.
4. In the case of an emergency, apart from the purpose stated in paragraph (a) above,
the Vice-Chancellor after
a. considering the recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty concerned, may
allow another form of assessment in
b. any suitable format as a replacement provided the said replacement is
reported to the Senate as soon as possible.

a. A student who falls ill during an assessment must report immediately to the
chief assessor of the assessment or to any other assessors, who must make
arrangements for the student to be examined immediately by a Doctor of the
University Student Health Clinic/ University of Malaya Medical Centre. The
student is required to submit the Doctors report and/or medical leave
certificate to the Dean of the Faculty of the programme of Study not later
than seven days from the date of medical examination by the said Doctor.
a. All matters relating to examinations are SECRET and shall not be disclosed to
any student or any other party who is not concerned unless otherwise
permitted.

PART VIII - APPEALS
1. A student who is not satisfied with the results of continuous and summative
assessments of any Stage may appeal as provided in paragraph (b) below for the
results to be reviewed. The appeal must be made within two weeks from the date of
the official notification of the assessment results.
2. An appeal must be made to the Dean of the Faculty of the programme of study using
the prescribed form accompanied by the original receipt of payment prescribed for
the said appeal.
3. The appeal form shall not be considered by the office of the Dean of the Faculty
concerned if:
a. it is submitted after the period mentioned in paragraph (i) above; and/or
b. it is incomplete; and/or
c. it is not submitted together with the original receipt of payment.
4. When an appeal is received, the Dean of the Faculty shall appoint a second assessor
for the assessment concerned. The original assessor and the second assessor
appointed shall review the answer script/ assessments concerned and report the
findings of the review to the Faculty Appeals Committee which shall then decide
whether the marks and/or grade of the student who has appealed be retained or
amended. The original assessor and the second assessor may attend the meeting of
the Faculty Appeals Committee, if required.
1. A student who has been terminated from his programme of study in accordance with
regulation 5(11)(h) may submit an appeal to continue with his studies. The appeal
shall be submitted to the Dean of Faculty of the programme of study who shall obtain

comments and recommendation of the Faculty Committee of Appeals. The
recommendations shall be submitted for the consideration of the University
Committee of Appeals set up by Senate. The appeal must be made by the student
within the period of two semesters from the semester in which the student
programme of study was terminated.
2. A student whose academic status has lapsed pursuant to Regulation 3(1)(d), may
submit an appeal to continue the students programme of study to the Dean of the
Faculty of the programme of study. The Faculty Committee of Appeals shall consider
the student appeal. The student shall be informed the result of the appeal by the
Dean of the faculty of the programme of study. The appeal must be made within two
semesters from the semester in which the student academic status had lapsed.
1. Any student who is in the final two semesters of the maximum duration of his
programme of study and who has yet to complete the requirements for graduation
for his programme of study may submit an appeal for an extension of his duration of
study. The appeal shall be submitted to the Dean of the Faculty who will obtain the
comments and recommendations of the Faculty Appeals Committee. The
recommendation of the Faculty Appeals Committee shall be submitted for approval
of the Universitys Appeals Committee established by the Senate.
2. The appeal must be submitted by the student within two semesters from the final
semester of the maximum duration of his programme of study.
