EDUW 690 Professional Goals

1. WTS Standard 4 (Teachers know how to teach), National Board for Professional
Teaching Standards Standard VI: Reading, and Danielson Domain 1 (Planning
and Preparation, component 1d: Demonstrating Knowledge of Resources). As an
elementary special education teacher, I am required to know and understand
curriculum across 6 grade levels. This requires a lot of time, planning, and
preparation as well as knowledge of all the resources available to me. I would
like to grow in these areas personally and professionally throughout my graduate
studies and afterwards. I would also like to incorporate more technology into my
lessons since this is a resource made available to me. As a special education
teacher, most of my students are not at grade level in the areas of reading and/or
math. It is important that I am knowledgeable of all grade level standards in these
areas in order to make sure I am teaching at a level in which they can be
successful. I understand that all students learn differently therefore I am going to
research and learn different ways to help them reach their goals.

2. WTS Standard 5 (Teachers know how to manage a classroom), National Board

for Professional Teaching Standards Standard XI: Teacher as Learner and
Reflective Practitioner, and Danielson Domain 2 (Classroom environment,
component 2c: Managing Classroom Procedures). I have always credited myself
as having good classroom management skills. I feel I have high expectations for
my students behavior in my classroom and have created a calming atmosphere in
which they can learn. However, many of my students struggle with self-
motivation, particularly in regards to homework and assignment completion in the
regular education setting. I support most of these students in the regular
education classrooms and most of them have work completion incorporated into
their IEP goals. In order to help these students reach their goals, I would like to
learn and implement strategies to help them succeed.

3. WTS Standard 7 (Teachers are able to plan different kinds of lessons), National
Board for Professional Teaching Standards Standard IV: Instruction, and
Danielson Domain 1 (Classroom environment, component 1e: Designing
Coherent Instruction). I would like to focus on learning activities and lesson and
unit structure as goals in order to engage my students more in my lessons.
Organizing and planning are areas I need to improve upon, especially as this
relates to my students progress.

Alison,

These are excellent goals. Let me know if I can be helpful as you continue to
integrate these in your future studies and teaching.
