Name: Jenna Mixer Date of Lesson: 11/22/2016
Content Area: ELA-Media Grade Level: 11/12
Time(length of lesson): 8:25a-8:55a

Number of Students: 31 Demographics:

Lesson Topic:
Examining vocabulary related to the film Psycho with examples from the film and specific
definitions.

Standard:
R.11-12.4: Knowledge of Language: Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and
multiple meaning words and phrases based on grades 11-12 reading and content,
choosing flexibility from a range of strategies.

Content Learning Objective:

Students will be able to define key terms and identify examples from films watched in
class.

Rationale:
By understanding vocabulary and the way to appropriately use the terms, students will
expand their understanding of language. Students will then be able to use this
information in the future as they examine the world around them.

Background:
I know that not all students have been given access to some of the terms used to
describe the film Psycho. Students will have a basic understanding of the themes of the
film, but not all the language surrounding it.
I will know this by showing students stills from the film Psycho and asking what terms
they may use to describe it.

Academic Language:
*Gender
*Articulate
*Gratuitous
*Plausible
*Transgressive
*Slasher
*Quasi-psychoanalytic
*Inefficacy
*Misogyny
*Motif

Guiding Question:
Psycho was produced and released during the tail end of the Hays Code era; its
content highly progressive and scandalous for the time. We discussed previously
different motifs that appear throughout the film. What sorts of motifs did you find
important and impactful to the film overall?

Activities/Procedures:
1. A review of the film will be done with students sharing opinions. Discussion will be
started with a guiding question and personal connection from the instructor.
2. Stills of specific scenes from the film will be shown and the students will be asked to
describe the scene. A total of 10 terms will be discussed so 10 stills will be shown.
3. Students will then participate in a game of Fly Swatter Vocabulary. The terms
discussed will be given definitions and on the board the vocabulary words will be
displayed. Two students must race to slap the correct term for the definition read.
4. Students will pick their successor if correctly guessed.
5. Once all terms have been correctly identified, students will return to their seats.

Materials (for students and teachers):

2 Fly Swatters
Poster board for Vocabulary Fly Swatter
PowerPoint presentation with the stills from the movie and the associated terms.

Accommodations for Exceptional and Varied Learners:

By using varied media, students will be given a different platform to learn. Visual
definitions will be given for vocabulary terms increasing the opportunity for memorization
for visual learners.
The activity makes students leave the typical learning environment and kinesthetic
students will be given the chance to experience the vocabulary in their own learning
style.

Assessment:
I will know if students met the learning objective if they actively participate in the
discussion and activity following the presentation of information. Students will also
complete an assignment that calls for definitions outside of class.
