D uring the past issues I explained
a lot about Vedic Astrology. In
this issue I wish to explain the nature
of the planets in different houses. In
the past issue, I explained about the
positions of Sun, Moon and Mercury
in the twelve houses of an individual’s
horoscope. In this issue I wish to explain
about the planets Mars, Jupiter, Venus,
Saturn, Raaghu, and Kethu. These are
all only hints. The strength of the planet
will vary from person to person or
horoscope to horoscope. To know more

Mars in Twelve Houses.
The house that Mars resides in represents
an area of the life that you’ll express
actions and desires. Your energies and
initiative will be spent focusing on the
affairs of this sector of the chart. Mars
is assertive, sometimes causing conflict.
First House: People here are likely to
appear very strong, muscular as well as
actually being very strong. They tend to
be very assertive, dominant and very self
confident.

usually do more then what is required from then and try to do
things to please others. This does mean that they sometimes do
things for others that they don’t want to be done.

The house placement of Venus shows how you express yourself
socially, romantically, and artistically, in the different areas of
the life circle. Venus brings a sense of harmony, refinement,
and aesthetic taste to the house it occupies.
First House: These people are normally pleasing and very
friendly to others; they are very socially outgoing and have a
happy outlook on life. They easily make friends and are artistic
through art, music and the way they dress.
Second House: People here have a love of money and what it
can buy. They are interested in making a lot of money, even

First House: These people are often very serious which means
that it is hard for them to relax and have a good time. They
are usually prone to depression. They are very highly self
disciplined and set strong rules for themselves. They usually
also suffer from a shyness or inferiority complex that they try
to hide.
Second House: Saturn positioned in the second house places
importance in financial and material affairs and denotes a good

very cautious about relationships and marriage; they are likely
to delay a marriage for as long as possible. Although they
may feel very restricted in relationships they can accept all
situations for better or for worse.
Eighth House: Finances are likely to be heavily weighed
upon these people. They are likely to have to help others with
their finances and probably have a partner with bad financial
dispositions on which they will have to take on the financial
problems themselves.

concepts such as astrology. They are usually high followers of

Twelth House: Their work tends to be under recognized and

self confidence. They usually have a subconscious need for
solitude and retreat.

Raaghu shows that area of the life in which strong urges for
individuality and freedom of expression are shown. In this
house you should expect sudden and unexpected changes to
occur during your life. Raaghu brings radical behavior caused
by your actions, the action of others, or by circumstances over
which you have no control.
First House: These people often have very erratic behavior.
Usually they stand out from a crowd due to their personality and
outgoing behavior. They are very strong natured individuals.
Others may view them as somewhat eccentric, unusual or
advanced. Common sense is often not used in their actions,
due to their impulsiveness, yet they are good at inventing.
Second House: This is where there will be a lot of ups and
downs in finances. No matter what is done it is very unlikely

nature. They are very spontaneous and usually involved with

upsets or changes are likely to occur for these people.
Fifth House: People here are often highly inventive and
creative. They have strong urges to be free and independent.

(Asparagus stir Fry) Curd-2 table spoons

Procedure For grinding
Take off the bottom and top 1 inch portion from the asparagus. Cocunut-2 table spoons

the gravy boil for 5 minutes. Now if the gravy is very thick
than the consistency you need, water can be added. Check for
the salt and hot taste and if any correction has to be made it can
be done now. If you find the gravy too watery even after 5 to 8
minutes of boiling, little coriander powder can be added. Once
everything is well mixed and the gravy looks perfect switch off
the stove. Add the lemon juice and mix well (Note that lemon
juice should be added after switching off the stove else the
gravy will turn little bitter). Your chettinad chicken gravy is
ready. Garnish with coriander leaves while serving.
Chettinad Milagu Kozhi Varuval
(Authentic Chettinad Pepper chicken)
Ingredients
Chicken- 1lb
Big onion (nicely chopped)-2
Tomatoes (chopped)-2
Ginger garlic paste-2 teaspoons
Chili powder-1 table spoon
Coriander powder-1 table spoon
Crushed pepper corns-2 table spoons
Lemon juice-1 table spoon
For seasoning
Cinnamon-3 sticks
Cardamom-3
Clove-3
Bay leaf-little
Fennel seeds-1 teaspoon
Curry leaf-little
Marinate the chicken for 30 minutes with 1 table spoon chili
powder mentioned in the ingredients, 1 teaspoon turmeric
powder and half the ginger garlic paste. Add half the quantity
of salt required also during marinating.
Procedure
It is always better to cook this curry in a kadai than in pressure
cooker as the ingredients are added in different stages of
cooking. Pour 2 table spoon of cooking oil and add the items
given in ‘for seasoning’ one by one in the order given. First add
the nicely minced onion and sauté till oil separates. Then add
the ginger garlic paste and turmeric powder. Stir well so that
the paste doesn’t get burnt. Now add the tomato pieces and
try to smash it using the ladle. The smaller the pieces, it will
be easier to get smashed fast. Now add the coriander powder
and mix well. Add ¼ cup of water into the masala. Reduce
the flame to medium. Close the kadai and let the masala get
cooked for 5 minutes. Now you can see cooked masala with oil
on top. In this stage add the marinated chicken pieces. Sauté
nicely till the moisture in the chicken comes out. Now there
will be enough water in the chicken to get cooked. Add the
remaining salt needed. Close the kadai now and in medium
flame cook for 8 to 10 minutes. Check that the chicken pieces
are cooked well, if not cook for some more time. Once the
pieces are cooked add the crushed pepper corns on top and mix
well. Add the lemon juice after switching off the stove. Garnish
with coriander leaves.
Puliyodarai
(Tamarind Rice)
Ingredients for the mix
Coriander seeds-2 table spoons
Channa dhal-1 table spoon
Fenugreek seeds-1/2 teaspoon
Red chillies-8
In a kadai dry roast all the items in low fire for 5 to 6 minutes
and grind it.
Ingredients for the Rice
Raw rice-2 cups
Tamarind-size of a small lemon
Curry leaf-little
Turmeric powder-1 teaspoon
Asafotida-1/2 teaspoon
Ground nut-2 tablespoons

Keep the kadai in the stove. Pour four table spoons of gingili Fenugreek seeds-1/2 teaspoon
oil. Season with items given in “To season”. Add the groundnut Asafetida-a small piece

UNITED WE STAND; DIVIDED WE FALL
Once upon a time three sons were engaged in merchantile
business under the supervision of their father. They were very
rich. Each son was proficient in his own department. If one
was good in sales, the other one was competent in purchases
and similarly the third one in finance. Unluckily, one day
the father got bed ridden and the sons decided to divide the
business under the fallacy that each of them were experts in
their own way and can handle their individual business solely.
The father was glum and grumpy with their decision but was
helpless and unfortunately the separation took place. As a
result three of them became each other’s competitors. With
the passage of time, they started having huge losses in their
respective businesses. They tried all possible ways to succeed
but the situation became worse. Then they came to their father
for a piece of advice. The father said when you all were doing
the business jointly, the business ran successfully. But it was
not any one of you responsible for the success of the business
rather traits of all three of you put together made the business
successful. The sons realized their mistake & got reunited. So
we conclude that disunity always ruins.

LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP
Once a fox was roaming around in the dark. Unfortunately, he
fell into a well. He tried his level best to come out but all in
vain. So, he had no other alternative but to remain there till the
next morning. The next day, a goat came that way. She peeped
into the well and saw the fox there. The goat asked what you
are doing there, Mr. Fox. The sly fox replied, I came here to
drink water. It is the best I have ever tasted. Come and see for
yourself. Without thinking even for a while, the goat jumped
into the well, quenched her thirst and looked for a way to get
out. But just like the fox, she also found herself helpless to
come out. Then the fox said, I have an idea. You stand on your
hind legs. I’ll climb on your head and get out. Then I shall help
you come out too. The goat was innocent enough to understand
the shrewdness of the fox and did as the fox said and help him
get out of the well. While walking away, the fox said, had you
been intelligent enough, you would never have got in without
seeing how to get out. That’s why the elders say, look before
you leap.
WICKEDNESS RUINS
Once a wolf was roaming around in a forest in search of a prey.
He came near a village that was located at the edge of the forest.
There he saw a flock of sheep grazing in a pasture. While he
was planning to kill a sheep, he found a sheep-skin lying by the
foot-path. Seeing the sheep-skin, a wicked idea clicked him.
He thought of wearing it and slipping into the flock because
then, it would be easy to get a prey. When the wolf got into
the flock, the shepherd drove it to the village. Reaching there
he enclosed it in the pen and shut the door immediately. Just
then his wife came there and said today I have nothing to cook
for dinner. So, kill one sheep for me. The shepherd went into

the pen and looked for a meaty sheep. Mistaking the disguised
wolf for a sheep, he killed him with an axe. The wickedness is its
own punishment. The wolf wanted a sheep as his prey but himself
became the food of the shepherd.
UNWISE START LEADS TO A SAD END
Once, there was a mouse that had his hole near a pool in a thick
forest. A frog often came out for basking in the sun. Within no
time, they became buddies. But the friendship of a frog and
mouse is highly undesirable because the frog’s home is in water
and the mouse on land. One day the frog said to the mouse, let’s
bind ourselves together with a string so that we may never get
separated. The mouse agreed. So, both tied themselves together
leg-to-leg. Though on land, it went quite well, but in the pool, it
was tragic for the mouse. The frog swam about delightfully in the
pool dragging the mouse with him. Soon, the mouse drowned and
his body floated on the surface of the pool. A kite hovering in the
sky saw the dead mouse it swooped down to carry it off. Up went
the frog as well and became the kite’s meal.
SAY THE TRUTH BUT DON’T HURT ANYONE’S FEELINGS
The chief of gods was getting married. He decided to celebrate the
event by hosting a reception. He invited all the animals living on
land and in water to attend the banquet.
All the animals came to attend the feast but the tortoise didn’t
come. Jupiter was surprised at his absence. After few days, Jupiter
came across the tortoise and asked him, why didn’t you attend the
banquet held in honor of my marriage? Were you all right? The
tortoise retorted, I am a stay-at-home type of an animal and never
care to attend petty affairs. Why should I trouble myself when
there is no place like home? Though, the tortoise said something
very true, but the way he said it was very hurting. The chief of
gods felt pinched and cursed the tortoise, now; you will always
carry your home on your back and never be able to unload it. Till
today, every tortoise carries his home with him.
Eklavya
T his is the story of a long-gone era. In the country
of India, nearly five thousand years back, lived
a boy named Eklavya, the son of a tribal chief in the
forests of the kingdom- Hastinapura. Eklavya was
a brave, handsome boy. He was loved by all. But
he was not happy. His father saw that something
troubled Eklavya. More than once he found his son
lost deep in thought when other boys enjoyed the
pleasures of hunting and playing. One day the father
asked his son, why are you so unhappy, Eklavya?
Why don’t you join your friends? Why are you not
interested in hunting?
Father, I want to be an archer, replied Eklavya, I want
to become a disciple of the great Dronacharya, the
great tutor of Archery in Hastinapura. His Gurukul is
a magical place where ordinary boys are turned into
mighty warriors. Eklavya saw his father was silent.
He continued, Father, I know that we belong to the
hunting tribe, but I want to be a warrior, father, not a
mere hunter. So please allow me to leave home and
become the disciple of Dronacharya. Eklavya’s father
was troubled, for he knew that his son’s ambition was
not an easy one. But the chief was a loving father and
he did not want to refuse his only son’s wish. So the
kind man gave his blessings and sent his son on his
way to Dronacharya’s Gurukul. Eklavya set on his
way. Soon he reached the part of the forest where
Dronacharya taught the princes of Hastinapur.
In those days, there was no such system as a school,
college, university or hostel. The only place where
one could get some education was a Gurukul. A
Gurukul (Guru refers to “teacher” or “master”; Kul
refers to his domain, from the Sanskrit word kula,
meaning extended family.) is a type of ancient
Hindu school in India that is residential in nature
with the sishyas or students and the guru or teacher
living in proximity, many a time within the same
house. The Gurukul is the place where the students
resided together as equals, irrespective of their social
standing. The students learned from the guru and
also helped the guru in his day-to-day life, including
the carrying out of mundane chores such as washing
clothes, cooking, etc. The education imparted thus,
was a wholesome one.

Having said this much, let us now return to Eklavya. When the
boy reached Dronacharya’s Gurukul, he saw that it consisted
of a group of huts, surrounded by trees and an archery yard.
The disciples were practicing to shoot arrows with their bows
and arrows in the yard. It was an engaging sight. But Eklavya’s
eyes searched Dronacharya. Where was he? Will he be able to
see the man? Without Dronacharya, all his purpose of coming
here would be meaningless. But all his worries soon subsided.
He didn’t have to wait for long. There was the man standing
near a tree busy instructing a boy, who was none else than the
third Pandava prince Arjuna, as Eklavya came to know later.
Though Eklavya had never seen Dronacharya before, he put his
guess at work. He went near Dronacharya and bowed.

The sage was surprised to see a strange boy addressing him.

Who are you? he asked.

“Dronacharya, I am Eklavya, son of the Tribal Chief in the

western part of the forests of Hastinapura.” Eklavya replied.
“Please accept me as your disciple and teach me the wonderful
art of Archery.” Dronacharya sighed. “Eklavya...” said he,”...
if you are a tribal hunter, you must be a Shudra, the lowest
social community according to the Vedic Caste System. I am
a Brahmin, the highest caste in the kingdom. I cannot teach a
Shudra boy.”

“And he’s also a Royal teacher,” interrupted Prince Arjuna. “Our

Guru has been appointed by the King to train us, the princes
and the highborn. How dare you come inside the Gurukul and
seek him? Leave! Now!” he spat out, looking enraged that
Eklavya became an archer of exceptional prowess, superior

Eklavya replied humbly. “Your
Guru? How can I be your Guru?
I have never seen you before!”
Dronacharya exclaimed in surprise.
But all of a sudden he remembered
something. He remembered about
an eager boy who had visited
his Gurukul several months ago.
“Now I remember,” said he. “Are
you not the same hunter boy
whom I refused admission in my
Gurukul some months back?”
“Yes, Dronacharya”, replied the
boy. “After I left your Gurukul, I
came home and made a statue like
you and worshipped it every day. I
practiced before your image. You
refused to teach me, but your statue
did not. Thanks to it, I have become
a good archer.”
Hearing this, Arjuna became
angry. “But you promised me
that you’d make me the best
archer in the world!” he accused
Dronacharya. “Now how can that
be? Now a common hunter has
become better than me!” The other
princes remembered their master

frequently praising Arjuna that he had
immense talent and will be the greatest
archer in the kingdom. They waited with
bated breath. What will their teacher
do now? Unable to answer Arjuna’s
question, Dronacharya remained silent.
The sage too was upset that his promise
to Prince Arjuna was not going to be
fulfilled. He was also angry with Eklavya
for disobeying him. So the sage planned
to punish Eklavya. “Where is your guru
dakhsina? You have to give me a gift for
your training,” the sage demanded. He
had finally found a way to make Eklavya
suffer for his disobedience.
Eklavya was overjoyed. A guru dakshina
was the voluntary fee or gift offered by
a disciple to his guru at the end of his
training. The guru-shishya parampara,
i.e. the teacher-student tradition, was a
hallowed tradition in Hinduism. At the
end of a shishya’s study, the guru asks
for a “guru dakshina,” since a guru does
not take fees. A guru dakshina is the
final offering from a student to the guru
before leaving the ashram. The teacher
may ask for something or nothing at
all. “Dronacharya, I’ll be the happiest
person on earth to serve you. Ask me
anything and I will offer it to you as
my guru dhakshina “he said. “I might
ask something you don’t like to give
me. What if you refuse the dhakshina I
want?” Dronacharya asked cunningly.
Eklavya was shocked. It was considered
a grave insult and a great sin if a
guru’s dakshina was refused. “No!
How can I, teacher? I am not that
ungrateful. I’ll never refuse anything
you ask, Dronacharya,” promised the
unsuspecting boy. Dronacharya did
not wait anymore. “Eklavya, I seek to
have your right-hand thumb as my guru
dhakshina” he declared. Silence befell
on everyone. Everyone was shocked,
even Arjuna. He looked at his teacher
in horror and disbelief. How could their
teacher make such a cruel demand? That
too, from a mere boy? For a moment
Eklavya stood silent. Without his thumb
he could never shoot arrows again.
But the teacher must be satisfied. “Ok
Gurudev, as you wish.” said he. Then,
without the slightest hesitation, Eklavya
drew out his knife and cut his thumb!
The princes gasped at Eklavya’s act of
bravery. But the tribal boy betrayed no
signs of pain, and held out his severed
thumb to Dronacharya. “Here is my guru
dakshina, Dronacharya”, Ekalavya said.
“I am happy that you have made me
your disciple, even if I’m a mere Shudra
hunter.”
The sage was humbled. He blessed the
young archer for his courage. “Eklavya,
even with out your thumb, you’ll be
known as a great archer. I bless you
that you will be remembered forever for
your loyalty to your guru,” Dronacharya
declared and left the forests. He was
moved and grieved at his own action.
But he was content that his promise to
Arjuna was not broken. The Gods blessed
Eklavya from above. But despite his
handicap, Eklavya continued to practice
archery. How could he do so? When one is
dedicated, one can make even mountains
bow. With practice, Eklavya could shoot
arrows with his index and middle finger
and he became a greater archer than he
was ever before. His renown spread far
and wide. When Dronacharya came to
know this, he blessed the boy silently
and begged for divine forgiveness. True
to Dronacharya’s blessing, Eklavya is
still praised as the most loyal and brave
student in the epic of Mahabharata.

 Ms. Divya Mathur
Born, brought-up and educated in Delhi, Divya
Mathur worked as Medical Secretary for nearly
15 years at the All-India Institute of Medical
Sciences, New Delhi, where she committed
herself to help the blind. She is Executive
Director of a charity in London, which
helps the blind to be self-reliant. A master’s
degree holder in English, she has diplomas
in Journalism from Delhi and Glasgow. She
devised shorthand for Ophthalmology in 1972
to facilitate her work at the Dr Rajendra Prasad
Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences.
Recently honored with the NRI Literary
Award (Aksharam), Divya has won the
Arts Achiever of the Year2003 Award, for
outstanding contribution and innovation in the
field of Arts. She was given the Experience
Corps Certificate of Recognition & Merit to
mark her contribution in the community. She
was also invited to receive the Lifting Up the
World with a Oneness-Heart Award (Honoring
individuals of Inspiration and Dedication) by
The Peace Meditation Mission of the United
Nations. She has also won an Award for
Outstanding Achievement in Poetry by the
International Library of Poetry.
Karma 20
A nominated Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Divya aims
at addressing the cultural aspirations of the Indian community
and promoting Indo-British dialogue at the level of thoughts
and shared experience. In 1992, she joined hands with the team
chosen by Minister and Director of Culture, Mr. Gopal Gandhi,
to establish The Nehru Centre in London, where she continues
to enjoy working as its Senior Program Officer. She has helped
to organize thousands of programs in the last thirteen years.
The magnitude of her organizational skills can be seen from the
number of programs she has helped to organize. It is over six
hundred programs, only in the last three years, with an average
of 200 programs per year.
Ms. Zena Sorabjee
She is the Chairman of the Baha’i House of Worship. She is also
the Chairman of the Lotus Charitable Trust and Lotus Hospitals
Trust. She has represented the Indian Baha’i community at
the UN Millennium Conference for World Religious Leaders
and the Baha’i International Community at various UN
seminars. Traveling throughout India, Zena has assisted in the
establishment of primary schools, the education of girls, and
the transfer of technology to rural India. For her social work,
Zena has been named Best Social Worker by Nehru Bal Samiti.
Ruth Manorama ( Social Activist)
Ruth Manorama is India’s most effective organizer of and
advocate for the women belonging to the ‘scheduled castes’
and also called ‘untouchables’. Ruth Manorama is a woman
from the same community. Born at Madras in 1952, her
parents escaped the worst consequences of being Dalits by
becoming Christians. In 1975 Manorama took a Master’s
degree in social work from the University of Madras and has
trained in both the community organization methods of Saul
D’ Alinsky and the conscientisation methods of Paolo Freire.
In 2001 Manorama was granted an honorary doctorate “for
the distinguished contribution made to church and society”
by the Academy of Ecumenical Indian Theology and Church
Administration. Manorama has been consistently associated
with a range of issues – the rights of slum dwellers, domestic
workers, unorganized labor and Dalits, and the empowerment
of marginalized women. She stresses the interconnectedness
between these issues, and the common cause that marginalized
people share the world over.
Her work crosses the borders between grassroots movements,
mass mobilization, and international movements. Manorama’s
working life has been spent on organization building,
mobilization of people and advocacy on behalf of Dalit women
through a large number of organizations. She is: - General
Secretary of Women’s Voice founded in 1985, to work with
women in slums, struggling for land, shelter and survival
rights of the urban poor. President of the National Alliance
of Women, set up following the Fourth World Conference of
Women in Beijing in 1995 to monitor government performance
on its various commitments to women and lobby for change.
Joint Secretary of the Christian Dalit Liberation Movement,
formed in the 1980s to mobilize Christian Dalits for affirmative
action. Secretary of the Karnataka State Slum Dwellers
Federation. Secretary for organization building of the National
Centre for Labor, an apex organization of unorganized labor in
India. -President of the National Federation of Dalit Women
(NFDW), set up in 1995.
In addition, she has a number of regional and international
roles (Asian Women’s Human Rights Council, International
Women’s Rights Action Watch – Asia – Pacific, Sisters’
Network). She has also been a member of the Karnataka State
Planning Board, the State Commission for Women, the Task
Force on Women’s Empowerment of
the Government of India and a number
of other state and national bodies. Ruth
Manorama was chosen to be included
in “1,000 women for Nobel Peace Prize
2005”.
Ashminder Kaur Dhadialla,
A Sikh lawyer, born in Nairobi, Kenya on
17 November 1974. She left Kenya as a
teenager and first studied science in Canada
before rounding off her law degrees
with a Masters at Oxford University in
England. Ashminder participated in the
1995 World Debating Championships and
was Secretary of the Oxford University
Women’s Blues Squash Team.
Following graduation from Oxford,
Ashminder worked for leading
international law firms and companies,
including Clifford Chance LLP in London,
however, her key interest remained in
undertaking pro bono human rights work
and in preserving Sikh culture, history and
theology. Away from corporate finance
legal work, Ashminder spends a minimum
of ten hours a week on unpaid pro bono
work which ranges from assisting in
domestic violence disputes to working
with international human rights groups
on complex and politically sensitive cases
of alleged genocide or crimes against
humanity. Ashminder also takes a keen
interest in legal issues affecting women
in her native country, Kenya and the
structure of the Kenyan legal system, and
prepares restructuring proposals in this
regard. In 2002, to counter Sikh under-
representation at leading Universities,

 Ashminder founded “The Sikh Scholarship
Foundation”, a charity that provides grants
and scholarships to leading Universities, such
as Oxford, for Sikhs. The aim is to extend
this program to other under-represented state-
less nations with distinct cultures, such as the
Bushmen of South Africa and the Aboriginals
of Australia by 2009. All Scholars undergo a
parallel program of study to learn about their
own culture, history and theology and to ensure
they are equipped and capable of competently
addressing the various social and relevant issues
facing their communities.
Piu Sarkar
(Artist)
If the eyes say it all, then Piu Sarkar’s creations
with their large almond-shaped eyes, speak
volumes. Her canvases have lovely women
with arresting features, quite absorbed in their
own world. It is almost as thought they have no
cares or worries. “That’s quite right,” says the
self-taught artist, Piu. “I paint women who are
enigmatic and sensual; women who have a mind
of their own.”
Piu herself seems like an extension of her
canvases. She is a lovely person, well read
and absolutely passionate about her work. The
latter evolves around stree Shakti, which is
the liberation of women that were embodied
in mythology and folklore. “The series is
also a story of my journey as a woman. It is
not a voice against the man’s world but her
existence and evolution from pages of epics to
entertainment,” she states. One of her paintings
was inspired by a scene from ‘Pather Panchali’,
a Bengali classic. Charulata or Shakuntala are
influenced by old Bengali classics of Bibhuti
Bhushan Bandhopadhyaya, Tagore and Kalidas.
“All the women that I paint deal with a similar
undercurrent of pressure and need strength to
sustain them. It is here that the Shakti comes in,”
she explains.
Piu admits that images of women icons of
Indian mythology have been her real inspiration
as they reflect the social and political strategy
of a woman’s status from the past to the society
in today’s times. “The series of my creations
have been influenced by eyes and motifs of
Ajanta Frescoes, Pala Art of Bengal, Mewar
Miniatures and Mathura/ Gandhara Patterns,
etc. I have depicted the flavor of Indian Culture
and Classics in an individualistic language and
presented it in a contemporary palette of Indian
Pop Art,” she adds.

The striking depiction of these women icons have already
won Piu admiration from eminent artist Jogen Choudhury
and actress Sushmita Sen. “I did not know that Sushmita had
bought my paintings until much later. She then called me up to
tell me that the image had ‘strength’ in its eyes,” she says. For
the artist says it’s going to be women power that will occupy
her canvas for some time. After which she will see what else
catches her fancy. Piu Sarkar has been awarded the ‘Woman
achiever of Calcutta’.
Aruna Roy,
(Magsaysay award winner)
Aruna Roy, born to Tamil parents and brought up in a totally
secular tradition, is one of those who did. Six years (1968-
1975) in the IAS were enough to convince her that reality
laid elsewhere. In her words: “Frankly speaking, I was not
happy with bureaucratic functioning.... There are times when
one knows that the decisions being taken by higher-ups are
blatantly wrong, but nothing can be challenged.”
Aruna left the IAS to join her husband Bunker Roy’s Social
Work and Research Centre in Tilonia in Rajasthan: “I had my
schooling in grassroots work in Tilonia. Before that, I did not
even know what a village was!” In 1990, she moved away from
Tilonia to join the Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan (MKSS),
an organization of poor farmers, both men and women. The
MKSS fought for fair wages to workers, and also became
centrally involved in the campaign for the Right to Information
(RTI). As Aruna describes it, the RTI campaign—later to
blossom into a full-fledged movement—was born from an
agitation for minimum wages by MKSS in the late ‘80s.
Sixty per cent of the members of MKSS are women. It is
these women and men who provide the breadth of vision that
characterizes MKSS. For them, as for Aruna, the RTI is not
just a campaign for the right to information. It is a campaign
that links together all the natural rights of citizenship—to food,
to wages, to work, to dignity, and to a life free of violence.
The presence of women is essential for, according to Aruna,
women instinctively understand what it is to be marginalized,
and, over time, men in the movement have begun to understand
the importance of involving women.
In 2000, when Aruna Roy was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay
award, she dedicated it to the ‘ordinary’ people—both women
and men—she works with. Perhaps the most fitting tribute to
this intrepid and remarkable activist came from the women of
Devdungri, where she has made her home, when her mother,
herself a remarkable woman, passed away. The bier was carried
by women of all castes, religions, backgrounds. Her pyre was

world. Felonies were originally crimes which involved the
confiscation of a convicted person’s land and goods; other crimes
were called misdemeanors. The Federal government defines a
felony as a crime which involves a potential punishment of
one year or longer in prison. Crimes commonly considered to
be felonies include, aggravated assault and/or battery, arson,
burglary, illegal drug abuse/sales, embezzlement, grand theft,
tax evasion, treason, espionage, racketeering, robbery, murder,
rape, kidnapping and fraud. Broadly, felonies can be categorized
as either violent or non-violent (property, drug, white-collar)
offenses. Some offenses, though similar in nature, may be
felonies or misdemeanors depending on the circumstances. For
example, the illegal manufacture, distribution or possession of
controlled substances may be a felony, although possession of
small amounts may be only a misdemeanor. Possession of a
deadly weapon may be generally legal, but carrying the same
weapon into a restricted area such as a school may be viewed
as a serious offense, regardless of whether or not there is intent
to use the weapon. It is not that each and every one doing
any or all of the aforesaid are caught by the police and taken
in front of the law. Only a few are caught. Even only a few
out of the caught are punished. What is the reason for this?
According to the sayings of Atharva Veda nobody in this earth
are born as criminals. But they are made as criminals by the
environment and the planetary positions. How they are affected
by the environment? If the planets are weak in the horoscope,
they become the worst criminals. If the planet Sun’s position
is weak it is definite that the person will be imprisoned at least
for a few months. At the same time if the planet Sun joins with

S P E C I A L Once, a poor lady with a look of defeat

on her face, walked into a grocery store.

The grocer, staring at the scales,

GROCERY LIST
She approached the owner of the store in
a most humble manner and asked if he
would let her charge a few groceries.
She softly explained that her husband
was very ill and unable to work, they had
seven children and they needed food. The
grocer scoffed at her and requested that
she leave his store at once. Visualizing
the family needs, she said: ‘Please, sir! I
will bring you the money just as soon as
I can.’ The grocer told her he could not
give her credit, since she did not have
a charge account at his store. Standing
beside the counter, was a customer who
overheard the conversation between the
two. The customer walked forward and
told the grocer that he would stand good
for whatever she needed for her family.
The grocer said in a very reluctant voice,
‘Do you have a grocery list?’ The lady
replied, ‘Yes sir.’ ‘O.K’ he said, ‘put your
grocer y list on the scales and whatever
your grocery list weighs, I will give
you that amount in groceries.’ The lady
hesitated a moment with a bowed head,
then she reached into her purse and
took out a piece of paper and scribbled
something on it. She then laid the piece of
paper on the scale carefully with her head
still bowed. The eyes of the grocer and
the customer showed amazement when
turned slowly to the customer and said
begrudgingly, ‘I can’t believe it.’ The
customer smiled and the grocer started
putting the groceries on the other side of
the scales. The scale did not balance so he
continued to put more and more groceries
on them until the scales would hold no
more. The grocer stood there in utter
disgust. Finally, he grabbed the piece of
paper from the scales and looked at it with
greater amazement. It was not a grocery
list, but it was a prayer, which said:
“Dear Lord, you know my needs and I am
leaving this in your hands.” The grocer
gave her the groceries that he had gathered
and stood in stunned silence. The lady
thanked him and left the store... The other
customer handed a fifty-dollar bill to the
grocer and said; “It was worth every penny
of it. Only God Knows how much a prayer
weighs.”
So dear heart, trust God to heal the sick,
provide food for the hungry, clothes and
shelter for those that don’t have as we do.
Prayer is one of the best free gifts we send
and receive.

B y the gracious blessings of the Almighty and Swamiji,
we discussed the spirituality of Ashtavakra Geetha in the
last issue. As it is a very great work, I wish to discuss the
same in this issue also. There is no use in simply reading all
these things. But we should at least try to practice a little bit
of the spirituality taught by the great scholars. By practicing
the spiritual life we can have a comfortable living. We can
develop wonderful humanitarian relationships. Swamiji Sri.
Selvam Siddhar often used to say “you will live according to
your thoughts”. If our thoughts are high, we can live a higher
life style.
After hearing the explanations of the great saint Ashtavakra,
the great student Janaka asks a long question to the master. The
question is, “It is in the infinite ocean of myself that the world
bark wanders here and there, driven by its own inner wind. I
am not upset by that. Let the world wave rise or vanish of its
own nature in the infinite ocean of myself. There is no increase
or diminution to me from it. It is in the infinite ocean of me that
the imagination called the world takes place. I am supremely
peaceful and formless, and as such I remain. My true nature is
not contained in objects, nor does any object exist in it, for it
is infinite and spotless. So it is unattached, desire less and at
peace, and as such I remain. Truly I am but pure consciousness,
and the world is like a conjuror’s show, so how could I imagine
there is anything there to take up or reject? For this long
question the master Ashtavakra replies as follows. “Bondage is
when the mind longs for something, grieves about something,
rejects something, holds on to something, and is pleased about
something or displeased about something. Liberation is when
the mind does not long for anything, grieves about anything,
rejects anything, or holds on to anything, and is not pleased
about anything or displeased about anything. Bondage is
when the mind is tangled in one of the senses, and liberation
is when the mind is not tangled in any of the senses. When
there is no ‘me’, that is liberation, and when there is ‘me’,
there is bondage. Considering this earnestly, do not hold on
and do not reject. Knowing when the dualism of things done
and undone has been put to rest, or the person for whom they
occur has, then you can here and now go beyond renunciation
and obligations by indifference to such things.
The great master continues his explanation further. “Rare
indeed, my son. The lucky man whose observation of the
world’s behavior has led to the extinction of his thirst for
living, thirst for pleasure and thirst for knowledge. All this is
impermanent and spoilt by the three sorts of pain. Recognizing
it to be insubstantial, contemptible and only fit for rejection,
and one attains peace. When was that age or time of life when
the dualism of extremes did not exist for men? Abandoning
them, a person who is happy to take whatever comes attains
perfection. Who does not end up with indifference to such
things and attain peace when he has seen the differences of
opinions among the great sages, saints and yogis? Is he not a
guru who, endowed with dispassion and equanimity, achieves
full knowledge of the nature of consciousness, and leads others
out of samsara? If you would just see the transformations of the
elements as nothing more than the elements, then you would
immediately be freed from all bonds and established in your
own nature. One’s inclinations are samsara. Knowing this,
abandon them. The renunciation of them is the renunciation
of it. Now you can remain as you are. Abandoning desire, the
enemy, along with gain, itself so full of loss, and the good deeds
which are the cause of the other two - practice indifference
to everything. Look on such things as friends, land, money,

property, wife, and bequests as nothing but a dream or a three
or five-day conjuror’s show. Wherever a desire occurs, see
samsara in it. Establishing yourself in firm dispassion, be
free of passion and happy. The essential nature of bondage
is nothing other than desire, and its elimination is known
as liberation. It is simply by not being attached to changing
things that the everlasting joy of attainment is reached. You are
one, conscious and pure, while all this is just inert non-being.
Ignorance itself is nothing, so what need have you of desire
to understand? Kingdoms, children, wives, bodies, pleasures -
these have all been lost to you life after life, attached to them
though you were. Even though you have enough of wealth,
sensuality and good deeds, in the forest of samsara the mind
has never found satisfaction in these. How many births have
you not done hard and painful labor with body, mind and
speech? Now at last stop! Unmoved and undistracted, realizing
that being, non-being and transformation are of the very nature
of things, one easily finds peace.
At peace, having shed all desires within, and realizing that
nothing exists here but the Lord, the Creator of all things, one
is no longer attached to anything. Realizing that misfortune and
fortune come in their turn from fate, one is contented, one’s
senses under control, and does not like or dislike. Realizing that
pleasure and pain, birth and death are from fate, and that one’s
desires cannot be achieved, one remains inactive, and even when
acting does not get attached. Realizing that suffering arises
from nothing other than thinking, dropping all desires one rids
oneself of it, and is happy and at peace everywhere. Realizing,
‘I am not the body, nor is the body mine. I am awareness’,
one attains the supreme state and no longer remembers things
done or undone. Realizing, ‘It is just me, from Brahma down

to the last clump of grass’, one becomes free from uncertainty,
pure, at peace and unconcerned about what has been attained
or not. Realizing that this entire varied and wonderful world is
nothing, one becomes pure receptivity, free from inclinations,
and as if nothing existed, one finds peace”. Only after learning
all these things thoroughly, Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar got
enlightened. Not only by the learning but by the continuous
practicing he has attained such a higher place.
After understanding the long answer from the greatest master,
the humblest but greatest student Janaka starts his talks.
Devoted Guruji, First of all I was averse to physical activity,
then to lengthy speech, and finally to thinking itself, which is
why I am now established. In the absence of delight in sound
and the other senses, and by the fact that, I am myself and
not an object of the senses. My mind is focused and free from
distraction - which is why I am now established. Owing to
the distraction of such things as wrong identification, one is
driven to strive for mental stillness. Recognizing this pattern
I am now established. By relinquishing the sense of rejection
and acceptance, and with pleasure and disappointment ceasing
today, I am now established. Life in a community, then going
beyond such a state, meditation and the elimination of mind-
made objects - by means of these I have seen my error, and I
am now established. Just as the performance of actions is due
to ignorance, so their abandonment is too. By fully recognising
this truth, I am now established. Trying to think the unthinkable,
is doing something unnatural to thought. Abandoning such a
practice therefore, I am now established. He who has achieved
this has achieved the goal of life. He who is of such a nature
has done what has to be done. The inner freedom of having
nothing is hard to achieve, even with just a loin-cloth, but I
live as I please abandoning both renunciation and acquisition.
Sometimes one experiences distress because of one’s body,
sometimes because of one’s tongue, and sometimes because
of one’s mind. Abandoning all of these, I live as I please in the
goal of human existence. Recognizing that in reality no action
is ever committed, I live as I please, just doing what presents
itself to be done. Yogis who identify themselves with their
bodies are insistent on fulfilling and avoiding certain actions,
but I live as I please abandoning attachment and rejection. No
benefit or loss comes to me by standing, walking or lying down,
so consequently I live as I please whether standing, walking or
sleeping. I lose nothing by sleeping and gain nothing by effort,
so consequently I live as I please, abandoning loss and success.
Frequently observing the drawbacks of such things as pleasant
objects, I live as I please, abandon the pleasant and unpleasant.
He who by nature is empty minded, and who thinks of things
only unintentionally, is freed from deliberate remembering
like one awakened from a dream. When my desire has been
eliminated, I have no wealth, friends, robber senses, scriptures
or knowledge? Realizing my supreme self-nature in the Person
of the Witness, the Lord, and the state of desirelessness in
bondage or liberation, I feel no inclination for liberation. The
various states of one who is empty of uncertainty within, and
who outwardly wanders about as he pleases like a madman,
can only be known by someone in the same condition”. While
a man of pure intelligence may achieve the goal by the most
casual of instruction, another may seek knowledge all his life
and still remain bewildered. On hearing these words from the
disciple the Guru starts telling his ideas on liberation and how
to live happily.
Liberation is distaste for the objects of the senses. Bondage
is love of the senses. This is knowledge. Now do as you
please. This awareness of the truth makes an eloquent, clever
and energetic man dumb, stupid and lazy, so it is avoided by
those whose aim is enjoyment. You are not the body, nor is the
body yours, nor are you the doer of actions or the reaper of
their consequences. You are eternally pure consciousness the
witness, in need of nothing - so live happily. Desire and anger
are objects of the mind, but the mind is not yours, nor ever has
been. You are choice less, awareness itself and unchanging - so
live happily. Recognizing oneself in all beings, and all beings
in oneself, be happy, free from the sense of responsibility
and free from preoccupation with ‘me’. Your nature is the
consciousness, in which the whole world wells up, like waves
in the sea. That is what you are, without any doubt, so be free of
disturbance. Have faith, my son, have faith. Don’t let yourself
be deluded in this. You yourself are the Lord, whose property
is knowledge, and are beyond natural causation.
The body invested with the senses stands still, and comes and
goes. You yourself neither come nor go, so why bother about
them? Let the body last to the end of the Age, or let it come to
an end right now. What have you gained or lost, who consist of
pure consciousness?
Let the world wave rise or subside according to its own nature
in you, the great ocean. It is no gain or loss to you. My son, you
consist of pure consciousness, and the world is not separate
from you. So who is to accept or reject it, and how, and why?
How can there be birth, karma or responsibility in that one
unchanging, peaceful, unblemished and infinite consciousness
which is you? Whatever you see, it is you alone manifest in it.
How could bracelets, armlets and anklets be different from the
gold? Giving up such distinctions as ‘This is what I am’, and
‘I am not that’, recognize that ‘Everything is myself’, and be
without distinction and happy. It is through your ignorance that
all this exists. In reality you alone exist. Apart from you there
is no one within or beyond samsara. Knowing that all this is an
illusion, one becomes free from desire, pure receptivity and at
peace, as if nothing existed.
Only one thing has existed, exists and will exist in the ocean
of being. You have no bondage or liberation. Live happily
and fulfilled. Being pure consciousness, do not disturb your
mind with thoughts of for and against. Be at peace and remain
happily in yourself, the essence of joy. Give up the practice
of concentration completely and hold nothing in your mind.
You are free in your very nature, so what will you achieve by
working your brain? The Guru further continues telling his
ideas on being happy and living a comfortable life.
My son, you may recite or listen to countless scriptures, but you
will not be established within until you can forget everything.
You may, as a learned man, indulge in wealth, activity and
meditation, but your mind will still long for that which is the
cessation of desire, and beyond all goals. It is because of effort
that everyone is in pain, but no-one realizes it. By just this
simple instruction, the lucky one attains tranquility. Happiness
belongs to no-one but that supremely lazy man for whom even
opening and closing his eyes is a bother.
When the mind is freed from such pairs of opposites as, ‘I have
done this’, and ‘I have not done that’, it becomes indifferent to
merit, wealth, sensuality and liberation. One man is abstemious
and averse to the senses, another is greedy and attached to them,
but he who is free from both taking and rejecting is neither
abstemious nor greedy. So long as desire, which is the state
of lack of discrimination, remains, the sense of revulsion and
attraction will remain, which is the root and branch of samsara.
Desire springs from usage, and aversion from abstention, but
the wise man is free from the pairs of opposites like a child,
and becomes established. The passionate man wants to be rid
of samsara so as to avoid pain, but the dispassionate man is
without pain and feels no distress even in it.
He who is proud about even liberation or his own body, and
feels them his own, is neither a seer nor a yogi. He is still just a
sufferer. If even Shiva, Vishnu or the lotus-born Brahma were
your instructor, until you have forgotten everything you cannot
be established within.
He who is content, with purified senses, and always enjoys
solitude, has gained the fruit of knowledge and the fruit of the
practice of yoga too. The knower of truth is never distressed
in this world, for the whole round world is full of him alone.
None of these senses please a man who has found satisfaction
within; just as Nimbi leaves do not please the elephant that

the senses and nor is he attached to them. He enjoys himself
continually with an unattached mind in both achievement and
non-achievement. One established in the Absolute state with
an empty mind does not know the alternatives of inner stillness
and lack of stillness, and of good and evil.

Free of ‘me’ and ‘mine’ and of a sense of responsibility, aware

that ‘Nothing exists’, with all desires extinguished within, a
man does not act even in acting. He whose thinking mind is
dissolved achieves the indescribable state and is free from the
mental display of delusion, dream and ignorance. Today many
people are envying Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar. They say that
he is living in a very big mansion house; he drives expensive
and luxurious cars and so on etc. My only answer to all of them
is, even though he has everything, he is not attached to anything.
He is a practical example for all. Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar
often used to say, “I work for my great boss Lord Shiva. He has
given me all kinds of commodities for a happy and comfortable
living. I should work hard to keep up the position given by my
boss”. Everybody can become as Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar.
It needs faith, liberation and spiritual life. I thank Almighty and
Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar for giving me an opportunity to
share my thoughts on Spirituality. In the next issue also we will

I t is very hard for one to become great in life. One

can come up only according to the planets’ position
and very hard works. But it is very easy to become
bankrupt overnight. The planets decide our fate in
all aspects. According to the Atharva Veda the 2nd
place, that is called as “dhana sthaanam” for money,
the 11th place that is called as “laabha sthaanam”
and the 12th place, “viraya sthaanam” for the losses
are to be scrutinized to decide an individual’s financial
position. The planets, which are the owners of the
aforesaid houses, are also to be analyzed for one’s

Saturn, Raaghu and Kethu also play a major role in
deciding one’s monetary and economical strength.

The king of the planets is Sun. If he is the owner

of the 2nd house of an individual’s horoscope and
he is in his full power, it is very sure that the person
will earn a good lot of money from the government
sources such as contracts. If the planet Sun is in his
enemy’s house or focused by the vision of an enemy
planet, it is very sure that the person will be put in

being the owner of the 2nd house, is seated in the

A ll religions have all along their history
cherished and held peace, which is the
most valuable treasure for mankind. All the
schools of thought, all the saints and seers, all the
visionaries and poets have advocated the cause of
peace. Indeed, all the religions of the world and
all prophets have sung the praises of peace; and
whatever may be the doctrinal or other differences
between religions and sects, there is perfect
unanimity in their appeal for peace as the most
honored possession of man.
Naturally, one may wonder why in spite of such
unanimous advocacy of peace, mankind has been
witnessing wars and conflicts without a break all
through history. There is not a single country in
the world, which has not suffered by the breach
of peace to a smaller or to a greater extent. Great
saints and prophets have come and gone. They
have all preached peace eloquently and honestly,
but their influence has not been considerable in
preventing dissensions and conflicts.
The doctrine of Atharva Veda says that ‘na hi
kadachid anidrasam jagat’ (The world was never
any different from what it is now) implies that the
affairs of the world do not alter with the passage
of time and that human nature remains identical
whatever the affairs of the world. History, in a
sense, truly repeats itself. Wars have always been
fought; and violence, deceit, ambition, envy,
hatred, fear, suspicion, anger, pride, revenge,
passion and prejudice have dogged man all
through his career on the globe. The course of
mankind has not changed despite prophets and
messiahs, sages and seers.

But this is no justification for pessimism or
cynicism. It is the nature of all phenomena that
when things go wrong, corrections are promptly
applied and the original state is sought to be
restored. Wars are fought and peace is sought
thereafter. Periods of agitation and turmoil are
always followed by spells of calm and comfort.
Depravity soon gives place to good sense. But is
a significant detail to note that such corrections do
not occur spontaneously or mechanically. There
are always at the back of all these changes. And
such individuals are divinely inspired and operate
as emissaries of Destiny. Whenever evil prevails
and the good suffers, God manifests Himself to
put down the evil and support the cause of the
good.
The Vedic seer visualized a state of composure
and contentment in which not only all the living
beings but also the natural forces settle down
amicably for mutual benefit and betterment. He
did not distinguish between human beings and
animals or between animate beings and inanimate
things. They were all alike eligible for peace and
happiness. The Veda treats all aspects of existence
equally as sources of comfort or distress for
man depending on how he approaches them. To
have a comfortable and peaceful living, follow
the wonderful commandments of Swamiji Sri.

There are many problems in a human’s life. Out of all those
problems anger is the worst. If one gets angry everything will be
spoiled. That’s why Swamiji Selvam Siddhar always used to tell
“Shanti”. As a Swamiji and scholar of Atharva Veda he always
loves peace. He has helped and he is helping lot of people to
come out of anger. According to Atharva Veda and Atharva
Vedic Astrology the planets are the only reason for anger and
anger related problems. Before going deep into the subject let
us see what anger is and what are all the side effects of anger.
Anger is a normal and basic human emotion. Anger problems
are likely causing difficulty in family, social and/or occupational
settings. Depending on how it is managed and expressed, anger
can have positive or negative consequences. Awareness of angry
feelings can be helpful as it can signal when one’s rights are
being violated or one’s needs are being ignored by others. Anger
can also help to energize and motivate us to work to address
problems with another person or to change the life situation.
However, there are potential negative consequences of anger
when it is not managed or expressed appropriately or effectively.
Some people are chronically angry at others, or at themselves.
Often, angry people were criticized or abused themselves
earlier in life, and react to others in the same manner they were
treated. Prolonged or intense anger and frustration contributes
to physical conditions such as headaches, digestive problems,
high blood pressure and heart disease. Problems dealing with
angry feelings may be linked to psychological disorders such as
anxiety or depression. Angry outbursts can be a way of trying
to cope with unhappiness, or depressed feelings. Chronic anger
creates problems getting along with others, and can lead to
involvement in physically or emotionally abusive relationships.
Having “a short fuse” is often a factor in other problematic
behaviors such as “road rage,” accidents, and getting into verbal
or physical fights.
While some people openly rage, others have difficulty
acknowledging their anger and hold their feelings inside as they
avoid the issue that angers them. They may express anger in
a “passive-aggressive” way that can take the form of baiting
others, or frustrating them. People who express anger in a
passive-aggressive manner may fear hurting others or being “a
bad person” if they openly express negative feelings. However,
they usually end up damaging the relationship because other
people usually sense their anger on some level and begin
to build resentment toward them. People who are unable to
acknowledge anger in them often feel hurt by others’ hostility,
abusive behavior, or withdrawal from them.
Anger is frequently a result of frustration, or of feeling blocked
or thwarted from something we feel to be important. Anger
can also be a defensive response to underlying fear or feelings
of vulnerability or powerlessness. Many people with anger
problems are out of touch with signs that anger is building. Our
body gives us important clues to when we are angry, sometimes
before we are consciously aware of it. When anger builds, we
react as we do to stress. We may feel tension or stress in our
body as adrenaline is released, our breathing may quicken, or
our heart may start to beat faster.
The following are some possible signs of difficulty coping with
anger:
One feels (or fears) being out of control when he/she is angry.
One often feels tense, irritable or frustrated.
One finds himself/herself frequently gossiping or complaining
about others rather than speaking to them directly about what is
bothering him/her.
One frequently feels hurt or resentful that others treat him/her
unfairly.
One hurts others, especially those they care about, by demeaning
or putting them down, cursing at them, or being verbally abusive.
He/she ends up regretting something he/she said or did when
angry.
One takes out the anger on someone or something else rather
than the person or situation that is bothering him/her.
One has physically lashed out when angry (e.g. destroyed
property, hit someone, etc.).
One has lost or is in danger of losing a relationship, job, or
something else important because of his/her anger.
One has been arrested or has legal difficulties because of his/
her anger.
One uses alcohol or drugs to calm his/her emotions.
Others (e.g. friends, family, professors, academic administrators,
and bosses) have expressed concern about his/her anger.
All these things happen only because of the planets’ position in
one’s horoscope. Sometimes the black magic on one will also
make the person to get angry even for small and meager things
and happenings. In that condition the horoscope of the effected
person is to be scrutinized by Swamiji Selvam Siddhar as per
the standards of Atharva Veda. Then the proper Atharva Veda

Water, the Vital Component:
Water is the most abundant element in our body. 73% of our
body is made of water. This means a 200 pound (100 kg) person
really has 146 pounds (73 kg) of water. Like the Earth which
is three-quarters surrounded by water, the human body consist
three- quarters water. So, quite literally, all the cells in our body
are floating in an ocean of water. The water in our body, like the
ocean is salty, contains different types of salts.
We do not even realize the fact that this earth is identical to
our bodies in this respect. All the five elements of Earth are
present in the body. Like marine animals and land animals cells
are present in the blood and in the organs. It is fascinating

to relate different aspects of the Earth to the body. Like the
geochemical processes that occur on Earth, where the oceans
regulate land temperature of different landscapes, water in our
body distributes heat in the body. It is the vital medium in which
all chemical reactions of the body occur. All the processes of
our body occur due to enzymatic reactions. The zillions of
reactions that occur in our body every second are promoted by
water. Most of the reactions of the body either involve taking
in or giving out of water. Just like the ocean is the medium
for bulk transportation, water, in the form of blood circulates
nutrients and hormones both within and between body cells.
Earth is the only planet we know which has life and that is
because of water. Similarly we can live without food for many
weeks but without water we cannot exist beyond a few days.
Keeping this in mind, we will discuss the purpose of water
for the detoxification of the body and mind. Generally, people
have the idea that drinking plenty of fluids is sufficient to
replenish water in the body. The water that is taken along with
the fluids is adequate for maintenance of the body. But we are
concerned about cleansing the body for health. There are two
types of toxins that are produced in our bodies or that enter our
bodies through the environment. The two types of toxins are
water soluble and water insoluble toxins. The job of getting rid
of these two types of toxins is assigned to two major organs of
the body. One is the liver and other the kidneys. Kidneys flush
out water soluble toxins with the help of water and the liver
flushes out water insoluble toxins through the help of bile.
The byproducts of hormonal breakdowns and other metabolic
products are water insoluble toxins that are thrown out by the
liver. We will first discuss the kidneys and then, later, the liver.
Kidneys, the Garbage Cleaners
There are two million nephrons, the micro-chips of kidneys.
These nephrons filter about 2000 liters of blood every day.
Working with the kidneys, water helps to flush out toxic
substances and waste materials from the body. It also helps
the kidneys to produce sufficient urine to keep the body’s
inner chemistry in balance. If the chemistry is disturbed, the
reactions are hampered and this manifests as disease. Hence,
for the body to be healthy, water should be abundant. This is
the key to this therapy.
Every day zillions of chemicals reach the kidneys to be flushed
out through urine. These include metabolic waste like urea,
uric acids, breakdown products of hormones, vitamins, salts.
These are all natural which the kidneys are accustomed to for
thousands of years.
Modern man’s kidneys, however, are challenged with zillions
of manmade toxic chemicals that enter the body through a
variety of ways. The sources include food (coloring agents,
flavors, preservatives, sweeteners, pesticides, herbicides,
fertilizers, hormonal substances and antibiotics from diary
products), cosmetics (tooth paste, shaving creams, sprays, dyes,
lipstick, eye lashes, nail polishes and removers), environmental
pollutants both indoors, and outdoors. Thus the body is choked
with chemicals and the burden goes to the liver and kidneys.
The liver converts the fat soluble toxic chemicals into water
soluble chemicals and thereby helps the kidneys to flush the
toxins through urine. However, with limited water supply, the
kidneys cannot completely flush out metabolic and foreign
waste. Therefore, metabolic wastes accumulate and cause
diseases like cancers, allergies, hypertension, Parkinson’s,
kidney stones, gall stones, kidney failures etc. Accumulation of
foreign chemicals accelerates the cause of the above diseases
and also triggers other ailments. Water alone can help the body
to get rid of these wastes.
All therapies, especially alternative healing are directed towards
cleansing toxic chemicals out of the body. They might use herbs
to achieve detoxification. But they cannot be done every day.
Since water is the most abundant component of the body and
is also the safest, most economical and natural cleansing agent,
it works very well. The nature of human mind is that it
believes in complex things but not in simple, natural ways. The
very nature of man’s mind is to go for complex ways to solve
simple problems. In health issues too, we use very complicated
drugs and procedures. We are not against modern medicines or
practices. Instead, they can be used in emergency cases. The
truth is that they may never be needed at all if one maintains
good health.
Water, the Safest Supplement
It is an irony that we think of the tiniest chemicals that are needed
for our body. Hence, we give much importance to vitamins,
minerals, enzymes, hormones etc. We calculate calories of
carbohydrates, proteins and fats. However, we forget water is
the major ingredient of our body. It is this ignorance that causes
many diseases. Water is the safest supplement one can take
everyday to cure and prevent diseases. If this water supplement
is taken regularly, perfect health can be achieved. The only
caution is to use good quality water. Make sure the water that
runs through your tap is good quality water free from chemicals
and other toxins. There are many choices available like reverse
osmosis water, distilled water, de-ionized water, filtered water
etc. Each has its own advantage and disadvantages. We leave

“Usha Kaala Chikitsa” is the Sanskrit coinage for water therapy.
According to this ancient system, 1.5 liters of water should be
drunk without even brushing the teeth. It is very essential to
note that no drinks (like tea, coffee, and milk) or any form
of solid food should be taken within half an hour to one hour
before and after drinking 1.5 liters of water. Using any form
of alcoholic drink the previous night is strictly prohibited. The
following are the frequently asked questions.
When should I brush my teeth while doing water therapy?
The previous night before going to bed, if you clean your teeth
and gums (gums with hand) and next morning if your mouth
is not smelling bad then you may rinse your mouth with water
and gently brush with your hands and do water therapy almost
immediately. If your mouth has a foul smell and if you are
not comfortable with the above approach, brush your teeth and
then do water therapy after 5 minutes.
Should it be drunk all at once? Why not split the water and
drink throughout the day?
To clean the body one has to take a shower. One cannot keep
pouring little water throughout the day to clean the body.
Similarly one cannot argue that water can do its cleaning action
by drinking several cups of water throughout the day. To clean
the internal body you have to shower the internal body with 1.5
liters of water in the morning. Drinking water throughout the
day is for thirst. Water therapy is not for thirst but for flushing
all the toxins out of body and to regain good health.
Should I measure and drink water?
The stomach is a muscular sac that can hold about 1.5 liters
(1.6 quarts) of fluid. The stomach can expand to hold up to 4 L
(4.2 qts.) of food, more than 50 times its empty volume.
A great medical doctor of USA says, “The mechanisms we have
identified are important to the normal workings of the stomach
- a hollow organ which actively relaxes to help accommodate
the size of your meal. The human stomach has a ‘resting’
internal volume of 75 milliliters but, by relaxing its muscular
wall, can expand to an internal volume of two liters or more - a
25-fold increase in the volume it can accept. This expansion
is controlled by nerves inside the stomach wall and these
nerves release molecules that stimulate the receptor proteins
embedded in muscle cells in the gut wall”. By adopting the
water therapy, one can maintain a good health.

Pranayama: A new Lifestyle
W hy are you running to pay money with some so called
Gurujis and Sri Sris who claim that they know some
breathing exercises to heal you? Just read the following article
and practice by yourself. No more Sri Sris or any hanky panky.
All the best. Sage Agasthiya is the first of all the rishis and
monks to teach pranayama. What is Pranayama? Pranayama
is a Sanskrit word meaning “restraint of the prana or breath”.
The word is composed of two Sanskrit words, “Prana”, life
force, or vital energy, particularly, the breath, and “ayama”,
to suspend or restrain. It is often translated as control of the
life force (prana). When used as a technical term in yoga, it is
often translated more specifically as “breathe control”. Literal
translations include “suspension of breath” and “regulation of
breath”. Being the Guru, Swamiji Sri. Selvam Siddhar explains
Pranayama in a simplified manner.
Prana and lifestyle:
Lifestyle has a profound impact on the pranamaya kosa and
its pranas. Physical activities such as exercise, work, sleep,
intake of food and sexual relations, all affect the distribution
and flow of prana in the body. Faculties of the mind such as
emotion, thought and imagination affect the pranic body even
more. Irregularities in lifestyle, dietary indiscretions and stress,
deplete and obstruct the pranic flow. Depletion of energy in
a particular prana leads to the devitalisation of the organs
and limbs it governs and ultimately to disease or metabolic
dysfunction. The techniques of pranayama reverse this
process, energizing and balancing the different pranas within
the pranamaya kosha. The human body consists of five natural
gases and they are called as “Pancha pranas” in Sanskrit.
The breath is the most vital process of the body. It influences
the activities of each and every cell and, most importantly,
is intimately linked with the performance of the brain. Most
people breathe incorrectly, using only a small part of their lung
capacity. The breathing is then generally shallow, depriving
the body of oxygen and prana essential to its good health.

Practitioners develop sensitivity to the respiratory process and
retrain the muscles of the pulmonary cavity, enhancing their
vital capacity and preparing them for pranayama.
Rhythmic, deep and slow respiration stimulates and is
stimulated by calm content states of mind. Irregular breathing
disrupts the rhythms of the brain and leads to physical
emotional and mental blocks. These, in turn, lead to inner
conflict, imbalanced personality, disordered lifestyle and
disease. Although breathing is mainly an unconscious process,
conscious control of it may be taken at any time. Consequently,
it forms a bridge between the conscious and unconscious areas
of the mind. Through the practice of pranayama, the energy
trapped in neurotic, unconscious mental patterns may be
released for use in more creative and joyful activity.
Breathing and life span
In addition to influencing the quality of life, the length or
quantity of life is also dictated by the rhythm of the respiration.
The ancient yogis and rishis studied nature in great detail. They
noticed that animals with a slow breath rate such as pythons,
elephants and tortoise have long life spans, whereas those with a
fast breathing rate, such as birds, dogs and rabbits, live for only
a few years. From this observation they realized the importance
of slow breathing for increasing the human lifespan. A slow
breathing rate keeps the heart stronger and better nourished
and contributes to a longer life. Deep breathing also increases
the absorption of energy by the pranamaya kosha, enhancing
dynamism, vitality and general well-being.
Pranayama: The spiritual way
The spiritual seeker, however, also requires tranquility of mind
as an essential prelude to spiritual practice. To this end, many
pranayama techniques utilize kumbhaka, breath retention, to
establish control over the flow of prana, calming the mind and
controlling the thought process. Once the mind has been stilled
and prana flows freely in the nadis and charkas, the doorway to
the evolution of consciousness opens, leading the aspirant into
higher dimensions of spiritual experience.
However, for those who seriously wish to take up the advanced
practices of pranayama, the guidance of a guru or experienced
teacher is essential. Here are some basic tips.
1. Breathing: Always breathe through the nose and not the
mouth unless specifically instructed otherwise. The nose should
be cleaned regularly by jala neti prior to the practice session.
Jala Neti is nothing but cleaning the nostrils with pure water.
2. Time of practice: The best time to practice pranayama is
during the early morning when the body is fresh and the mind
has very few impressions. If this is not possible, another good
time is just after sunset. Try to practice regularly at the same
time and place each day.
 a bath for at least half an hour after the practice to allow the
body temperature to normalize.

8. Empty stomach: Wait at least three to four hours after

meals before starting pranayama.

9. Diet: A balanced diet or protein, carbohydrates, fats,

vitamins and minerals is suitable for most pranayama
practices. A combination or grains, pulses, fresh fruit
and vegetables, with a little milk product if necessary, is
recommended.

10. Avoid strain: With all pranayama practices it is important

room, which is well ventilated but not draughty. Generally,
avoid practicing in direct sunlight. As the body will become
over heated, except at dawn when the soft rays of the early
morning sun are beneficial.
4. Sitting position: A comfortable, sustainable meditation
posture is necessary to enable efficient breathing and body
steadiness during the practice. Sit on a folded blanket or cloth
of natural fiber to ensure the maximum conduction energy
during the practice.
5. Sequence: Pranayama should be performed after asanas
and before meditation practice. After practicing pranayama
one may lie down in Shavasana for a few minutes. But there
is no connection between Pranayama and asanas.
6. Clothes: Loose, comfortable clothing made of natural
fibers should be worn during the practice.
7. Bathing: Take a bath or shower before commencing the
practice, or at least wash the hands, face and feet. Do not take
to remember that the instruction not to strain, not to try to
increase your capacity too fast, applies, just as it does to
asana practice. Breath retention should only be practiced for
as long as is comfortable.
11. Contra-indications: Pranayama should not be practiced
during illness, although simple techniques such as breath
awareness and abdominal breathing in Shavasana may be
performed.
Simply by knowing these simple techniques some people
are minting money. So to say they are looting money from
the public. The ignorance of the public is much used by
some people using the name as Guruji and Sri Sri. To know

S pirituality involves the recognition and acceptance of a

God beyond our own intelligence and with whom we can
have a relationship. This God can provide an experience of
inspiration, joy, security, peace of mind, and guidance that
goes beyond what is possible in the absence of the conviction
that such a power exists. Spiritual healing is when energy is
transmitted to the person who needs it. The treatment works
on the body, mind, soul and spirit, which are seen as one unit
that must harmonize for good health. If a separate spiritual
healer is involved, the spiritual healer will place the hand on
the person being treated to channel the energy from the higher
Source. The spiritual healing can help mental and emotional
problems and physical conditions.

What is spiritual healing?

The channeling of healing energy from its spiritual source
to someone who needs it is called spiritual healing. The
channel is usually a person, whom we call a healer, and the
healing energy is usually transferred to the patient through

but through him. On the other hand, you don’t need a healer to
take advantage of spiritual healing. The word “spiritual” refers
to the divine nature of the energy, which healers agree that the
energy comes from one external, invisible intelligent source.
The healing energy from this source is available to all.
Spiritual Healers see the body, mind,spirit and soul as one
interdependent unit and believe all these four must work in
harmony to maintain positive health. Any problem - be it a
broken leg or depression needs the power of healing to restore
the balance of the whole person. It is felt that sickness often
starts in the mind, or at the deeper level of the spirit, and it is
often here that healing begins.
Spirituality vs. Religion
Spirituality can be seen as being distinct from religion.
Different world religions have proposed various doctrines
and belief systems about the nature of a God and humanity’s
relationship with it. Spirituality, on the other hand, refers to
the common experience behind these various points of view.
It is an experience involving an awareness of and relationship
with something that transcends your personal self as well as the
human order of things. This “something” has been given various
names (“God” being the most popular in Western Society)
and defined in ways that are too numerous to count. We call it
simply as the God. You can choose to define what that means
for yourself in whatever way feels most appropriate. Your own
sense of a God can be as abstract as “cosmic consciousness”
or as down-to-earth as the beauty of the ocean or mountains.
Even if you regard yourself an agnostic or atheist, you may
get a sense of inspiration from taking a walk in the forest or
contemplating a beautiful sunset. Or a small child’s smile may
give you a special sense of joy.
There is much healing and benefit to be obtained by cultivating
your spiritual life. A personal spiritual commitment is the most
important ingredient. Spiritual awareness and growth can
effect a transformation in your whole being. It can help you to

develop a basic trust and faith that is unshakable. Scientists call
this intrinsic belief.
Many have experienced major turnarounds in their condition
as a result of cultivating their spirituality. They feel that
developing a relationship with their God provided the moral
support, courage, hope, and faith for them to follow through
with their personal recovery program. It provided them with a
sense that they are not alone in the universe, and that there is
a source of guidance and support that is available at times of
confusion and discouragement.
Peace of Mind
Peace of mind is the result of feeling a deep, abiding sense of
security and safety. The more reliance and trust you develop in
God, the easier it becomes to deal without fear or worry with
the inevitable challenges life brings. It is not that you give up
your self or your will to such a power; rather you simply learn
that you can “let go” and turn to God when you feel stuck with
a problem in living and don’t know how to proceed. Learning
how to let go when solutions to problems aren’t immediately
apparent can go a long way toward reducing worry and anxiety
in your life. Peace of mind is what develops in the absence of
such anxiety.
Self-Confidence
As you develop a relationship with God, you come to realize
that he has created you and hence he has found something good
in you. You are part of the universe. You’re good, lovable, and
worthy of respect just by virtue of the fact that you’re God’s
creation. This realization can improve the way you look at
yourself and will help you to improve your ego and what you
think of yourself. You are still inherently good and worthwhile.
Your own judgments of yourself, however negative, do not
ultimately count if you are a creation of the universe as much
as everything else. As one person put it: “God doesn’t make
junk.”
The capacity to give and receive unconditional love
The most fundamental characteristic of God is that it offers
you an experience of unconditional love. This is a kind of love
which differs from romantic love or even ordinary friendship.
It entails an absolute caring for the welfare of another without
any preconditions. That is, no matter how another person
appears or acts, you have compassion and care for them without
judgment. As you develop a deeper connection with God, you
come to experience greater degrees of unconditional love in
your life. You feel your heart opening more easily to people and
their concerns. You feel freer of judgment toward them or of
making comparisons among them. Unconditional love shows
up both in your increased capacity to give love to others and
to experience more of it coming into your life. You begin to
experience less fear and more joy in your life and help to inspire
others to experience their own capacity for unconditional love.
This kind of love also manifests itself through the experience
of having everything you need in your life to get on with what
you want to do.
Guidance
Developing a relationship with God will provide you with
guidance for making decisions and solving problems. God has
a universal wisdom that goes beyond what you can accomplish
through your own intellect. In traditional religions this has been
referred to as the “divine intelligence.” Through connecting
with God, you can draw upon this greater wisdom to help
you resolve all kinds of difficulties. By learning to ask God
for guidance, you’ll be surprised to find that every sincere
request sooner or later is answered. And the quality of that
answer generally exceeds what you could have figured out
through your own conscious intellect or will. Here, God is like
your co-pilot. God is always available in the instant of need to
those who have made a habit of waiting quietly before Him for
insight and guidance.
Follow these guidelines for an effective relationship with
God:
1. Be quiet, patient, and open before God or Guruji.
2. Be confident that he will communicate his wishes and help
you execute them.
3. Do not tempt God or make terms with Him. Gandhi said,
“Not until we have reduced ourselves to nothingness, can
we conquer the evil in us. God demands nothing less than
complete self-surrender as the price for the only real freedom
that is worth having. And when a man thus loses himself, he
immediately finds himself in the service of all that lives. It
becomes his delight and his recreation.”
4. Be willing to accept what God provides. He knows best.
“Thy will, not mine, be done.” Have full trust in the wisdom
of God.
5. Ask for God’s help. Do not instruct him on what to do.
6. Let God speak to you through his Word. Read spiritual and
religious books such as the Bible and learn about the rules of
victorious living.
These are some of the characteristics that define a close
relationship with God. All of them can significantly contribute
to your personal healing process. The extent and sincerity of
your commitment will determine the degree of personal healing
you experience.
Outside Help: Healing Practitioners, Intercessory Prayers, etc.
Healers:
Healers believe that everyone has a healing mechanism that
flows as an energy force around the body, mind and spirit to
keep them in perfect order. Unfortunately, stress, an inadequate
diet, a negative attitude and other adverse factors can block our
healing mechanism so that it cannot function correctly and we
get ill. Spiritual healing provides the energy needed to crank
our own healing mechanism back into action. When a healer
lays his hand on you, he acts as a conductor or channel for the
healing energy which he believes has the “intelligence” to go
where it is needed.
Healers say that all of us have the power to heal, if we choose
to develop it. However, some do seem to have a healing gift.
Healing does not always work at a physical level; the illness
may remain but the ability to cope with it improves. Sometimes
it does not work at all. This may be because the sick person
“blocks” the healing forces - some people subconsciously
prefer to be ill. It may also be because we “need” to remain ill.
Healing is not just about living well, but also dying well.
People healed when they are dying may die more peacefully.
Typically, to begin the treatment the healer will attune with the
healing energy. Then he may scan your body, with his hands
hovering just above you. This scanning is to take a reading of
your body’s energy levels and to locate areas of low or blocked
energy where healing is needed. How long the healer spends
on each area is determined by your body’s needs. Generally,
the session lasts about an hour. All healers work in this way,
but some employ additional healing tools such as visualization,
past lives therapy, aura healing or they may concentrate on
using the “chakras” the seven main energy centers of the
body. During the treatment you may feel heat coming from the
healer’s hands, although some people feel a draught, a tingling
sensation, pins and needles, or a feeling of fight-headedness.
Afterwards, most people say they feel relaxed and peaceful,
although you might feel thirsty or sleepy. Leave a few days or a
week between sessions to give the healing time to work.
Intercessory Prayers:
Many Hindus ask saints and others to intercede on their behalf.
People pray for others. Your chance of healing can be improved
substantially if you can get others to pray for you. The scientific

 Atharva Veda “Kaiyelthu Sastra” also Known as
“ Graphology”
The modern world is vast. It gives the ancient things in
a new form and shape for the easy usage of all. Atharva
Veda is the most ancient of all the Veda. It deals with
all kinds spiritual healings. It has a lot of diagnosing
methods of various problems. The diagnosing methods
are Vedic Astrology, Kairegai Sasthram or palmistry,
Kaiezhuthu Sastram or Graphology, Enn Ganitham
or numerology and so on. Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar
(Dr. Commander Selvam) as a master of Atharva Veda
has brought out lot of secret factors of Atharva Veda
to this modern world. In this issue we will see about
the “Kaiyelthu Sastra” also Known as “ Graphology”.
Graphology is a science of determining the personality,
character traits and destiny of a person from his or
her own handwriting. Over 7000 years ago, Atharva
Veda noticed the correlation between handwriting and
personality. In 17th century, Saint Samarth Ramdas
Swami from India who is a Guru of Chatrapathi
Shivaji, brought out the factors of Atharva Veda and
wrote in detail about how the traits of a person can
be read from the handwriting and how in turn the
bad handwriting affects the mindset of the person.
He also prepared sample scripts of ideal handwriting.
He made many references to Graphology in his work
‘Dasabodha’.

To understand the basis of Graphology, we should
know about human brain which has centers connected
to our feelings and fingers. For example, ‘amygdala’
which is located in temporal lobe of brain, controls
social and sexual behavior and other emotions.
According to Atharva Veda, the ‘basal ganglia’ within
the cerebellum coordinates the movements of the finger
tips. So, the brain responds to the feelings like anxiety
or happiness which in turn affects the movements of
fingers and hence our handwriting reflects our feelings.
Hence the handwriting of a person who is under heavy
stress will be different from the handwriting of a
peaceful person. Similarly, the handwriting of healthy
person will vary from the handwriting of a person
who is suffering from ill health. There are three
zones in handwriting to analyze the characteristics
of an individual. They are upper, middle and lower
zones. The upper zone is called ‘intellectual zone’
which represents the intelligence, spiritualism and
imagination of the person. So, more letters thrusting
into upper zone represents an intellectual who uses
his mind more. The middle zone is called ‘social zone’
which represents the self-confidence of the person
and his social relations. When there are more letters
in middle zone we have a person for whom social
relations are important. He is action oriented and
does not waste his time in thinking. The lower zone is
called ‘baser zone’ and represents the material wants
and sexual desires of the person. Letters dropping
more into this zone represent a person who craves for
satisfying material desires. Letters with sharp bottoms
in this zone indicate criminal tendencies. The next is
Slant.
We can divide the slant of writing into 5 categories. If
the letters are perfectly vertical, they represent a person
who lives in the present. This person is disciplined with
good judgment. We find judges, business and political
people in this type. If the letters are slightly slanting
towards right, we have a person who lives for future.
He is quick to take decisions and implementing them
practically. Top level executives and administrators
will come into this category. If the letters are extremely
slanting towards right, the person jumps into action
without adequate thinking. Hence, their actions will
be often erroneous. If the slant is slightly towards left,
it represents a person who is highly imaginative and
an introvert. His advice will be very useful to others.
Political advisors, artists and cine people will come
into this category. If there is extreme slant towards
left, then we have a person who lives in the past. He is
a day-dreamer and can not carry any task practically.
He tries to avoid the society and keeps himself alone.
The next factor is Spacing.

When words are set too far apart from each other, it
represents loneliness and unwillingness to interact
with others. When words are too close to each other,
the person cannot keep distance from others. He does
not care for privacy and always close to someone. This
also represents insecurity and low confidence. Writers
who leave a wide space between each line are endowed
with good analytical thinking and management ability.
Teachers and executives hand writing will reveal this.
Writers who do not leave enough space between lines
cannot take proper decisions because they could not
survey the facts. They are weak-willed. The next factor
is the directions of lines.
Lines which ascend or go up express a strong wish
and optimism to improve life. Lines which descend
or go down towards the end represent pessimism,
sadness and lack of courage. A wavy line which rises
and comes down represents a person whose thoughts
fluctuate, hence he is not dependable. The next factor
is connective forms.
Connective forms represent the way letters in a word
are connected. There are 4 connective forms: Garland,
Arcade, Angular and Thread. Garland connectivity
represents smooth curve at base line. These people are
ready to mix with others and are easy going. Arcade
type represents rounded top like an umbrella. It is a
sign of keeping aloof from others. He/she is secretive,

also. The Angular connectivity is identified by sharp
angles at the top and base. This person is stubborn
and drags others towards his goals. He is tense and
sometimes violent. If the Angular type is combined
with leftward slant of writing, it is a sign of antisocial
tendencies. The Thread connectivity occurs when
the letters appear like interlaced threads. This form
indicates a person who is impatient, hesitant and
insecure and who makes hasty judgments. The next
factor is the size of letters.
A person who uses large letters craves for distinction
from others. He thinks that others should consider
him as eminent. On the other hand, a person who
uses small letters never bothers about others. He is
an intelligent person with good concentration. Round
letters are indicative of a soft and friendly person who

I n the past issues we discussed about various sports. In this
issue we will discuss about the famous sport “Kickboxing”.
Kickboxing refers to the sport of kicking and punching.
Kickboxing is a standing sport and does not allow continuation
of the fight once a combatant has reached the ground, although
certain styles of Muay Thai make exceptions to this rule.
Kickboxing is often practiced for self-defense, general fitness,
or as a full-contact sport. In the full-contact sport the male
boxers are bare-chested wearing shorts and protective gear
including: mouth-guard, hand-wraps, 10-oz. boxing gloves,
groin-guard, shin-pads, kick-boots, and optional protective
helmet (usually for those under 16). The female boxers will
wear a tank top and chest protection in addition to the male
clothing/protective gear. In European kickboxing, where kicks
to the thigh are allowed using special low-kick rules, use of
boxing shorts instead of long trousers is possible. In addition,
amateur rules often allow less experienced competitors to use
light or semi-contact rules, where the intention is to score points
by executing successful strikes past the opponent’s guard, and
use of force is regulated. The equipment for semi-contact is
similar to full-contact matches, usually with addition of head
gear. Competitors usually dress in a t-shirt for semi-contact
matches, to separate them from the bare-chested full-contact
participants.
Kickboxing is often confused with Muay Thai, also known
as Thai Boxing. The two sports are similar; however, in Thai
Boxing, kicks below the belt are allowed, as are strikes with
knees and elbows.
There are many arts labeled kickboxing including Japanese
kickboxing, American kickboxing, Indian boxing, Burmese
boxing, as well as French boxing. The term kickboxing is
disputed and has become more associated with the Japanese
and American variants. Many of the other styles do not consider
themselves to be ‘kickboxing’, although the public often uses
the term generically to refer to all these martial arts.

The term kickboxing was created by the Japanese boxing
promoter Osamu Noguchi for a variant of Muay Thai and
Karate that he created in the 1950s. The term was later used by
the American variant. When used by the practitioners of those
two styles, it usually refers to those styles specifically.
Kickboxing boomed and became popular in Japan as it began
to be broadcast on TV. By 1970, kickboxing was telecast in
Japan on three different channels three times weekly. Tadashi
Sawamura was an especially popular early kickboxer. In 1971
the All Japan Kickboxing Association (AJKA) was established
and it registered approximately 700 kickboxers. The first AJKA
Commissioner was Shintaro Ishihara, the long time Governor
of Tokyo. Champions were in each weight division from fly to
middle. Long time kickboxer Noboru Osawa won the AJKA
bantam weight title, which he held for years. Raymond Edler,
an American university student studying at Sophia University
in Tokyo, took up kickboxing and won the AJKC middleweight
title in 1972. He defended the title several times and abandoned
it. Other popular champions were Toshio Fujiwara and Shima.
However, by the late 1970s due to poor ratings and then
infrequent television coverage the boom was suddenly finished.
Kickboxing had not been seen on TV until K-1 was founded in
1993.
In 1993, as Kazuyoshi Ishii (founder of Seidokan karate)
produced K-1 under special kickboxing rules (No elbow and
neck wrestling) in 1993, kickboxing became famous again.
The sport has spread through Europe, North America, Australia
and New Zealand.
The Count Dante, Ray Scarica and Maung Gyi were the
pioneers of American Kickboxing. They held tournaments as
early as 1962. Between 1970 and 1973 a handful of kickboxing
promotions were staged across the USA. In the early days the
rules were never clear, one of the first tournaments had no
weight divisions and all the competitors fought off until one
was left. A very young Benny Urquidez reached the final.
Unfortunately at world level there was no infrastructure, no set
format of rules, the elements of danger were still included in the
combat forms. As the martial arts disciplines grew in popularity
mans urge to meet his/her peers on the competition floor
demanded conformity, a universal rules system, and a method
that would ensure the practitioners safety whilst competing at
sporting level. Various groups came forward in an attempt to
unite all these Eastern martial disciplines under one set of rules
that would cover the many and various forms of combat all
under one umbrella. After many failures, petty squabbles and
political in fighting, an organization was formed and termed
the World Kickboxing Association (WKA). The impetus of
the WKA on world martial arts as a whole was revolutionary.
They were the first organized body of martial arts on a global
scale to sanction fights, create ranking systems, and institute a
development program. Whereby at grass roots level, children
of all ages under a strict code of ethics and safety could learn
via satellite WKA clubs in every City, Town, and village, a
martial arts discipline thus ensuring for future years the growth
of the sport. Today, the International Kickboxing Federation
(IKF) is the most active kickboxing sanctioning body in North
America and one of the top 3 worldwide organizations. The
IKF also hosts the Largest All Amateur - Full Contact & Muay
Thai - Kickboxing Tournament in the World, the IKF World
Classic.
Europe, Australia and South America
Jan Plas, the Dutch kickboxer, founded Mejiro Gym with
some Muay Thai pioneers in the Netherlands in 1978, after he
learned kickboxing from Kenji Kurosaki in Japan. Plas also
founded NKBB (The Dutch Kickboxing Association), which
was the first kickboxing organization in Netherlands, in 1978.
The sport took off in the U.S. with the popularity and success
of Kev Kelsey in the 1970s. In South America the kickboxing
was introduced by martial artist and kickboxing champion,
Hector Echavarria, who brought the famous Joe Corley’s
Professional Karate Association, the International Sports
Karate Association, and the United States Karate Association
to Latin America.
Kick Boxing in India and China.
Adithada refers to the preliminary empty hand techniques
of southern kalari payat practiced in southern Kerala,
Kanyakumari and northern Sri Lanka. The word adi means
hitting and thada means to block. It is similar to kickboxing,
Muay Thai, and karate. Adithada incorporates both grappling
and striking concepts, and a detailed study of pressure points.
Practitioners are trained in using bare knuckles, feet, knees,
elbows and forehead as preparation for weapons training which
the basis of southern kalari payat is.
Lethwei was based on a combination of boxing arts from India
and China, known respectively as musti-yuddha and shoupo.
Matches were held for entertainment and were popular with
every strata of society. Participation was open to any male,
whether king or common public. At the time, matches took
place in sandpits instead of rings. Boxers fought without
protective equipment, only wrapping their hands in hemp or
gauze. There were no draws and no point system, the fight went
on until one of the participants was knocked out or could no
longer continue.
Sanshou or Sanda is a Chinese hand-to-hand self-defense
system and combat sport. Not seen as a style itself, rather it
is considered as just one of the two components of Chinese
martial arts training and is often taught alongside with taolu
(forms) training. However, as part of the development of sport
wushu by the Chinese government, a standard curriculum for
sanshou was developed. It is to this standard curriculum that
the term “Sanshou” is usually applied.
This curriculum was developed by experimenting with the
Chinese military experiences in close range and hand to hand
combat with reference to traditional Chinese martial arts. This
general Sanshou curriculum varies in its different forms, as the
Chinese government developed a version for civilians for self-
defense and as a sport.
Kick Boxing in Myanmar.
Kyar Ba Nyein, who participated in boxing at the 1952 Summer
Olympics, pioneered modern lethwei by setting in place
modern rules and regulations. He traveled around Myanmar,
especially the Mon and Karen states where lots of villagers
were still actively practicing lethwei. Kyar Ba Nein brought
them back to Mandalay and Rangoon and, after training with
them, encouraged them to compete in the matches he organized.
The Myanmar government has made some organizational
changes to make Burmese boxing more marketable
internationally. There are a number of Burmese boxers who
do compete in Thailand professionally with varying degrees
of success. The first lethwei championship tournament was
held in 2000. In ordinary matches there is no scoring system,
but it was adopted then. The official title matches haven’t been
held since the championship so those who knocked out the
tournament winners are considered the unofficial champions. It
should be noted that although only two or three official events
are held by the government each year, unofficial matches
take place at festivals around the country every month. In
government-sponsored fights, both competitors are given belts
as commemorative gifts. The winners are given black-colored
belts, and the losers are given white-colored belts.

Kick Boxing in Combodia.
Pradal serey or bradahl serei is an unarmed martial art from
Cambodia. It is a sibling of Muay Lao from Laos, Muay Thai
from Thailand, tomoi from Malaysia and a similar style called
lethwei from Myanmar. In Khmer the word pradal means
fighting or boxing and serey means free. Originally used for
warfare, pradal serey is now one of Cambodia’s national sports.
Its moves have been slightly altered to comply with the modern
rules.
Pradal serey is mostly the same as unarmed kbachkun boraan
except it does not include mae (core techniques), tvear (door
system that emphasizes footwork). Instead, it focuses more
on winning a bout. While most well-known for its kicking
technique, which generates power from hip rotation rather
than snapping the leg, pradal serey consists of four types of
strikes: punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes. The clinch is
also used to wear down the opponent. Compared to other forms
of Southeast Asian kickboxing, pradal serey emphasizes more
elusive and shifty fighting stances. The Cambodian style also
tends to utilize more elbows than that of other regions. More
victories come by way of an elbow technique than any other
strikes.
Kick Boxing in Korea.
Kun Gek Do, Kyuk Too Ki or Gwon-gyokdo is a combination
of the traditional Korean martial arts styles and Muay Thai; it
is sometimes referred to as the Korean version of kickboxing.
The national Kun Gek Do headquarters are located in Busan,
Korea.
It was founded by Jung Do-Mo after seeing a Taekwondo
martial artist defeated by a Muay Thai practitioner. Jung Do-
Mo decided that the combination of Taekwondo and Muay
Thai could create a martial art stronger than Muay Thai or
Taekwondo alone.
Kun Gek Do uses no open-hand movements. It is thought
by its practitioners that when a person blocks or strikes with
full power, an open hand can result in broken or dislocated
fingers. Its foot techniques is a combination of Taekwondo and
kickboxing movements, using kicks from both martial arts but
utilizing Tae Kwon Do footwork. In addition to this, Kun Gek
Do also utilizes throws and chokes.
Kick Boxing in Thailand.
Muay Thai is a hard martial art from Thailand. It is similar to
other Indochinese styles of kickboxing, namely pradal serey
from Cambodia, tomoi from Malaysia, lethwei from Myanmar
and Muay Lao from Laos. Descended from muay boran, Muay
Thai is Thailand’s national sport.
The word muay derives from the Sanskrit mavya and Thai
comes from the word Tai. Muay Thai is referred to as the “Art
of Eight Limbs” or the “Science Of Eight Limbs” because it
makes use of punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes, thus
using eight “points of contact”, as opposed to “two points”

(fists) in Western boxing and “four points” (hands and feet)
used in sport-oriented martial arts. A practitioner of Muay Thai
is known as a nak muay. Western practitioners are sometimes
called nak muay farang, meaning foreign boxer.
Kick Boxing in Japan.
Japanese Kickboxing is combat sport created by the Japanese
boxing promoter Osamu Noguchi and Tatsuo Yamada (Karate
practitioner). It was the first combat sport that adopted the name
of “Kickboxing” in 1966. The sport is now known as Japanese
Kickboxing and most recently K1 Rules to differ from other
combat sports that also adopted the name of “Kickboxing”.
The original rules were very similar to Muay Thai, but with
some differences between them.
American Kickboxing (which is similar to American Full-
Contact Karate) is a combat sport and a style of Kickboxing
in which two opponents of similar weight fight each other
using full contact strikes with their fists and feet to attack the
opponent, while keeping similar rules of Western Boxing. Full-
Contact Kickboxing competitions are generally distinguished
because of the dress of the fighters, mandatory wearing long
pants and foot-pads (unlike other kickboxing styles where
fighters wear shorts and fight bare-footed).
Although the term “Full-Contact Karate” has been used to refer
this sport, it should not be confused with the generic term Full
contact Karate, which refers to any traditional karate school
with the use of full contact sparring, like Kyokushinkai.
Kick Boxing in France.
Savate, also known as boxe française, French boxing, French
Kickboxing or French Footfighting, is a French martial art
which uses the hands and feet as weapons combining elements
of western boxing with graceful kicking techniques. Only foot
kicks are allowed unlike some systems such as Muay Thai and
Silat which allow the use of the knees or shins. “Savate” is a
French word for “old shoe”. Savate is perhaps the only style
of kickboxing in which the fighters habitually wear shoes. A
male practitioner of Savate is called a Savateur while a female
is called a Savateuse.
Kick Boxing in Philippines.
Yaw-Yan, also called Sayaw ng Kamatayan or “Dance of Death”
is a Filipino martial art developed by Napoleon Fernandez. It
is a form of kickboxing and resembles Muay Thai but differs
in the hip-torquing motion as well as the downward-cutting
nature of its kicks; Yaw-yan also differs from Muay Thai
because its practitioners can deliver their attacks from long
range. Yaw-yan practitioners participate in various Filipino
mixed-martial arts tournaments such as the Universal Reality
Combat Championship and Fearless Fighting.

Problems in getting married and

the Atharva Veda.
There are many problems in getting married. Nowadays getting
married in the prescribed age has become very rare. There
are a lot of reasons for this. The major problem is called as
“Mars Dosha” or “Manglik”. There is nothing wrong in being
a Manglik. Mangliks are normal people. Most importantly,
Mangliks should realize that being a Manglik is not a matter
to be afraid of; it is not the end of the world for them. Matters
pertaining to the intensity of the Manglik Dosha and its
cancellation play major roles and these are to be studied deeply.
Atharva Veda has mentioned a lot about the Manglik Dosha
and the remedies for overcoming the Manglik Dosha. One of
the biggest misconceptions and fears in the Hindu society with
respect to marriage is the presence of Mars Dosha or Kuja
Dosha in the horoscope. Mars Dosha occurs, when Mars is
placed in the ascendant, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the natal
chart. However, the Atharva Veda includes the 2nd house also
in the Mangal Dosha list. People in whose natal chart Mars is
placed in the above positions are called Mangliks. Now let us
see who is Mars or Mangal or Kuja.
Planet Mars in Vedic Astrology
Planet Mars is considered to be a commander-in-chief among all
the other planets. It symbolizes immense courage, aggression,
vitality, confidence and warrior qualities. It drives the fire of
independent spirit and sense of purpose among individuals.
Mars is also known as Angaraka and Kuja, meaning the
burning coal and the fair one respectively. He rules over
the two sidereal signs of Aries and Scorpio. He is exalted in
Capricorn and fallen in the sign Cancer. Mars is identified with
Lord Karthikeya, the god of war. He is the son of Lord Shiva.

Misconceptions about Manglik Dosha
Now days a lot of fake astrologers have entered in the field.
They are not so well learned scholars of astrology. They have
done a lot of misconceptions in all aspects of astrology. That
too particularly, they have done a lot of misconceptions about
mars. They have done a lot of misconceptions in married life
and getting marriage. They have taken their shelter in Magal or
Kuja or mars. Some of the most common misconceptions about
the planet Mars is that if a person is born on a Tuesday, then
he is said to be a Manglik or Mars-dominated native. But it is
not true. Another misconception is “double Manglik Dosha”,
which is a term being used by many astrologers. There is no
such term as “Double Manglik Dosha”, which refers to Mars
being in any of the above mentioned houses and also in its own
sign or in exaltation. Atharva Veda, be On the contrary, Mars in
own house or exaltation will considerably reduce the ill effects
of the Manglik Dosha. The most famous misconception about
being a Manglik is that if he/she is married to a non-Manglik,
then the spouse is bound to die. The above can be seen in a few
cases, where Mars is severely afflicted; overall strength of the
horoscope also needs to be checked according to the Atharva
Veda techniques.
Marriage and Manglik Dosha
Manglik Dosha is primarily considered at the time of marriage.
Many people consider Manglik Dosha as a bad yoga and are
reluctant to marry the persons, who have the Dosha, even if
the Dosha is cancelled in the birth chart. The nature of the
troubles in marriage absolutely depends on the nature of Mars
in the natal Chart and the Navamsa Chart. Also the birth chart’s
overall strength should be assessed, especially regarding
aspects from any benefic planets on the 7th house and 7th lord.
Another factor influencing the Manglik Dosha is the age of the
person at the time of marriage. Mars is said to have a maturity
age of 28. For a Manglik person, the malefic effects of Mars
reduce after the age of 28. Common effects attributed to Mars
with respect to its position in the natal chart:
Mars in the first house: - quarrelsome on even minor issues;
combative and dominating in relationship.
Mars in the 2nd house: - harsh speech, lack of money and
understanding in the family.
Mars in the 4th house :- aggressive emotional nature, which

Mars in the 7th house: - a lot of energy; difference of opinion

THE LITTLE MATCH – SELLER
It was terribly cold and nearly dark on the last evening of the
old year, and the snow was falling fast. In the cold and the
darkness, a poor little girl, with bare head and naked feet, was
roaming through the streets. It is sure she had on a pair of
slippers when she left home, but they were not of much use.
They were very large and indeed, they belonged to her mother,
and the poor little creature had lost them in running across the
street to avoid two carriages that made colloiding at a terrible
rate. One of the slippers she could not find and a boy seized
upon the other and ran away with it, saying that he could use it
as a cradle, when he had children of his own. So the little girl
went on with her little naked feet, which were quite red and
blue with the cold.
In an old apron she carried a number of match sticks, and had
a bundle of them in her hands. No one had bought anything
of her the whole day nor had any one given her even a penny.
Shivering with cold and hunger she crept along. Poor little
child, she looked the pitiature of misery. The snowflakes fell
on her long, fair hair, which hung in curls on her shoulders by
with straw and rags. Her little hands were almost frozen with
the cold Ah! Perhaps a bushings match might be some good if
she could draw it from the bundle and strike it against the wall,
just to warm her fingers.
She drew one out scratch, how it sputter and it burnt! gave a
warm, bright light, like a little candle, as she held her hand
over it. It was really a wonderful light. It seemed to the little
girl that she was sitting by large iron stone, with polished brass
feet and a brass ornament. How the fire burned and seemed so
beautifully warm that the child – stretched, out her feet as if
to warm them, when, to the flame of the match went out, the
stone Vanished and she had only the remains of the half – burnt
match in her hand.
The Christmas lights rose higher, till they looked to her like
the stars in the sky. Then she saw a star fall, leaving behind it
a bright streak of fine. “Some one is dying”, thought the little
girl, for her old grand mother, the one who had ever loved her,
and when a star falls, lauings behind it a bright streak of fire.
Some one is dying, “thought the little girl for heal old grand
mother, the only one who had ever loved her, and who was
now dead, had told her that when a star falls, a soul was going
up to God.
She again rubbed a match. On the wall, and the light shone
round her, in the brightness stood her old grand mother, clear
and shining, yet mild and loving in her appenance. Grand
mother, cried the little one, “O take me with you, I know you
will go away when the matchs burns out; you will Vanish like
the warm stove, the roast gore and large, glorious Christmas -
tree and she made haste to light the whole bundle of matches
gloved with a light that was brighter than the noon day and her
grand mother had never appeared so large or so beautiful. She
took the little girl in her arms, and they both flew upwards in
brightness and joy for above the earth, where there is neither
hunger nor pain, for they were with god.
In the dawn of morning there laid the poor little one, with
pale cheeks and smiling mouth, leaning against the wall shone
upon a little copse. The child still sat, in the stuffiness of death,
holding the matches in her hand, bundle of which was burnt.
“She tested to warm herself” said someone. No one imagined
what beautiful things she had seen nor into what glory she had
entered with her grandmother, on New Year day.

She rubbed another match on the wall. It burst into a flame

and where its light fell upon the wall. The wall became as
transparent as a well and she could see into the room. The
table was covered with a snowy white table cloth, on which
stood a splendid dinner. Service and a steaming roast goose,
stuffed with apples and chill plums. And what was still more
wonderful, the goose jumped down the dish and woddled
across the floor, with a knife and fork in its breast, to the little
girl. Then the match went out, and there remained nothing but
the thick, dramp cold wall before her.

She lighted another and she found herself sitting under a

beautiful Christmas tree. It was a larger and more beautiful
decorated that the one which she had seen through the glass
door at the rich merchants. Thousands of traped were burning
upon the green branches, and colored pitiatres. She had seen
like these only in the show – windows, looked down upon it
all. The little one stretched out her hand towards them, and the
match went out.

Karma 59
I started my spiritual practices at an early age and have been a
Thantra practitioner for many years. By way of introducing
the subject, let me say that “Thantra” is a very general term, and
that in Shakta (Goddess-focused) Thantra alone there are many
distinct subsects, some of them largely unknown except by their
own initiates.
In the Agasthya tradition initiation by a guru is the very core,
because the Guru passes on the powers and traditions to the
sishya at the moment she/he places his foot on the Shishya’s
head. They then remain dormant; and as you practice sincerely
and properly, the knowledge opens up like a flower and you
have the whole knowledge of the lineage (the parampara) to be
taken and used. It just flows out like a stream.
Thantra is a subject that evokes awe, confusion and at times
opposition and distaste in the uninitiated. It is a branch of human
endeavor that has its beginnings in the dim past. The methods
it employs have many things in common with other similar
practices in many other ancient cultures. Today, however, the
Thantric system alone maintains a complete, unbroken initiatory
system that is even now being practiced by many persons in
India.
Karma 60
But for a practitioner, it is unnecessary to gauge the antiquity of
the system. The very basis of the practice is unsullied belief. That
is why Parasurama says “Vishwaasabhooyishtam Pramaanyam”
“The belief is the authority”. A practitioner should, first and
foremost, practice the system and reap its benefits. And so I do
not propose to go into the history of Thantra except very briefly.
Those who want to know full details, if they approach me as
a guru, I am ready to teach them on the subject that elaborate
on specific areas of practice. The basic concept of Thantra is
attributed to Parasurama, the 6th Incarnation of Vishnu. His work
Parasurama Kalpasoothra (The Aphorisms of Parasurama), is the
basic Bible of Thantrics. There are Shakta, Shaiva, Vaishnava,
Ganapathya and Saura Thantras to name just a few schools. In
every school, the main Deity is treated as supreme and all other
deities as lower. This is so as to instill complete devotion on the
practitioner in the initial stages. Thereafter as one progresses the
Sadhaka realizes that “All is one” and still later that “Thou art
That”. If you have full grace of the Guru, this realization comes
fast.
In Shakta tradition, there are ten great Devathas or, as stated
in Sanskrit “Dasa MahaaVidyaas” [i.e., “Ten Mahavidyas”].
Practicing the rituals associated with some of them is really
difficult. There are various systems in Indian spiritual practices
that have granted benefits to practitioners. They can easily be
categorized broadly as:
The Vaidic System: (i.e., the system based on the Vedas). This
approach deals with detailed Rituals, requiring strict discipline
over long periods; various materials (some of which are now not
available, even in India); and strict training under well versed
Vedic scholars. It is a rather difficult thing for those who are not
willing to spend long periods of ascetic life.
The Yogic System: (based on Pathanjali’s Yoga Sutras). Again,
this approach requires long and arduous discipline under highly
qualified teachers. To the best of my knowledge the West has
few such teachers. But many unqualified persons are creating
great physical, mental and spiritual damage to those who study
under them. Like the Vaidic system, Yoga requires a certain
amount of renunciation and is intended for ultimate realization
of Godhead.
The Thantric System: The Thantric practices are slightly
different in content and quality from ordinary spiritual practices,
in which a great emphasis is laid on renunciation, restraint,
etc. It is said that, by Thantric practices, one attains both the
 without specific testing as to suitableness.
Vaidikas - the followers of Veda - on
many occasions derided the Thantra path.
But there are also references in Puranas
extolling virtues of Thantra. People in the
West have not seen or been made familiar
with all the Thantric practices -- even
by those who have opened parts of it to
the West. Thus, the West was mistakenly
led to believe that Thantra is nothing
but “glorified sex”. This misperception
has led many astray, and has kept many
really deserving persons away from
the practices. It has also brought many
sexually unsatisfied persons to what
they think is “Thantra”. It has helped
many people to cash in on the “fad” and
the “need”. But let me clarify once and
for all that THANTRA IS NOT ALL
ABOUT SEX. Real sexual practices may
play some role in the first stages -- and at
certain much, much higher stages -- but
it is not the be-all and end-all of Thantra.
Because, you must understand, sex in
Thantra simply plays the same role as
in ordinary life. We have sex in our life
but sex is not what we live for. It has its
role in the psychological and procreative
spheres. In the same way does sex has
some role in Thantra. But it is not an
essential thing.
In Thantra there are three sub-divisions:
worldly pleasures and ultimate realization
1. The Dakshinachra. The Right-Hand

co-relation with Thantric practices and
attitudes?
The greatest beauty of Thantra is that
once the student becomes a full fledged
practitioner, she/he will no longer be
governed by the normal rules of Karma.
Outwardly she/he will be leading a
normal existence -- but inwardly she/he
will be leading a very balanced life, so
that all actions are properly identified
and hence she/he will not be bound by
the Karmic link and she/he will always
be free from the Karma of all his actions,
because she/he has the right attitude. The
Karmic bond is snapped once for all once
the student becomes a real Thantric. She/
he is no longer bound by the mundane
differentiations of good and bad. The
dualities in life cease to have any role!!
Beginning a Thantric Practice
It is said in Thantra that for a person to be
initiated properly into Thantra one must
verily be SHIVA himself, or that it must be
his last incarnation on earth. What usually
happens is that sometimes persons who
are not fully evolved also get initiated
because of some past good fortune. They
will keep on doing the practices without
any substantial benefits. But suddenly, at
some stage, the realization dawns on them
out in a further life -- and they get a full-
fledged initiation and realize the ultimate
truth.For a Thantric practitioner, every
day is a new birth, bereft of the Karma
of the past day. He will have no baggage
to carry around! But there are certain
injunctions that must be remembered
always:
Karma 61
•Do not let a non-initiate know you are a Thantric Practitioner,
as there is chance of derision, and this will affect the aural body
of the practitioner. (But this injunction has little force now as
the practices are now coming out of the secret places where they
used to be practiced.)

•Practice daily and regularly.

•Never misuse the powers that you MAY gain for harming
others, because with that, all effects of the practice will cease.
(Some people think that because they destroy the karmic bonds,
they can do ANYTHING bad. This is wrong and will be visited
with grave consequences.)

•Always ask the mind why a certain urge is coming; whether it

is pure and whether it will hurt ANYBODY. ANYTHING that
will hurt ANYBODY shall not be done. But practices that need
to be done for spiritual progress can be done, so long as you
keep it from the knowledge of anybody who will be hurt by the
knowledge.

•The basic position is that we must realise that WE ARE GOD

and all GOD’s powers are available to us. The only difficulty
is that we do not recognise that; and once we do that, then WE
ARE GOD.

One must always strive to find the Guru -- and when you find
him/her, you will have completed 90 percent of the Journey.

his leather canteen so he could bring some back to a tribal
elder who had been his teacher. After a four-day journey he
presented the water to the old man who took a deep drink,
smiled warmly and thanked his student lavishly for the sweet
water. The young man returned to his village with a happy
heart. Later, the teacher let another student taste the water. He
spat it out, saying it was awful. It apparently had become stale
because of the old leather container. The student challenged
his teacher: “Master, the water was foul. Why did you pretend
to like it?” The teacher replied, “You only tasted the water.
I tasted the gift. The water was simply the container for an
act of loving-kindness and nothing could be sweeter.” I think
we understand this lesson best when we receive innocent
gifts of love from young children. Whether it’s a ceramic tray
or a macaroni bracelet, the natural and proper response is
appreciation and expressed thankfulness because we love the
idea within the gift. Gratitude doesn’t always come naturally.
A sick man turned to his doctor, as he was preparing to leave
the examination room and said, “Doctor, I am afraid to die.
Tell me what lies on the other side.” Very quietly, the doctor
said, “I don’t know.” “You don’t know? You, a Christian
man, do not know what is on the other side?” The doctor
was holding the handle of the door; on the other side came a
sound of scratching and whining, and as he opened the door,
a dog sprang into the room with his tail wagging and an eager
show of gladness. Turning to the patient, the doctor said, “Did
you notice my dog? He’s never been in this room before. He
didn’t know what was inside... He knew nothing except that
his master was here, and when the door opened, he sprang in
without fear. I know little of what is on the other side of death,
but I do know one thing. I know my Master is there and that
is enough.”
