The Baptism in the Holy Spirit and Praying In Other Tongues

– A Study Guide –

Don’t let anyone tell you that the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues, healings and
miracles and other manifestations of God are not for today, or not from God, or any
other nonsense. The devil is speaking through them. Would the devil lie to you? He
was a liar from the beginning.

Speaking in tongues is your private prayer language straight to God. You do not
understand the words you are saying. This prayer language is coming straight from
your “spirit man”, so to speak.

You are made of three parts: spirit, soul and body. Your spirit is what gets “born
again” when you receive Jesus and His free love gift to you, His works of redemption
on the cross.

Your soul is your mind, will and emotions, located in your head, your brain.

Your body is the fleshly home that keeps spirit and soul together, it is where you live.
Your body is not you. Your spirit and soul which make up your entire personality, that
is YOU.

This is a study guide. Please print this document and study it along with your Bible
near you. Look up the Bible passages for yourself.

I have been a saved, born again, Christian since July 30, 1972. I received the Holy
Spirit later that year in December of 1972. I have prayed in tongues every day since.
It is what has helped me survive through many difficult trials and tribulations.

Please pray and ask God for the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of
speaking in tongues. Get in a quiet place, preferably where you have peace and
quiet, and get alone with God. Think of what He has done for you, He has saved you
from a life of sin and eternity in hell. Praise and worship Him with all your heart, sing
love songs to Him, and then pray this:

“Heavenly Father, I’m asking You to save me right now and fill me with your Holy
Spirit. I receive Jesus as my Savior and Lord. I receive the free love gift that You
have given me through Jesus which is my redemption from sin and hellfire. Jesus’
precious blood has redeemed me and washed me clean from my sins. Because of
this I am asking for the infilling of your Holy Spirit with the evidence of praying in
tongues, my heavenly prayer language.”

Now, act on your faith and say whatever syllables come up from your heart. It may
sound foolish, that’s okay. Say the words you get and press through any barriers
through faith and keep on till the dam breaks and you have a free flowing prayer
language.

Some people get their prayer language immediately. It took me about four months.
That’s a long time, but hey, I pressed in until I got it. May God bless you.

Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

The Spirit Promised of the Father

Is 32:15 [There shall be desolation] Until the Spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the
wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest.

Is 44:2 Thus saith the Lord that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee;
Fear not...
3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour My
Spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:
4 And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses.

Is 59:21 As for Me, this is my covenant with them, saith the Lord: My Spirit that is upon thee, and
My words that I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the
mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed's seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth
and for ever.

Ez 36:27 And I will put My Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and you shall
keep my judgments, and do them.

Acts 2:16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel: [taken from Joel 2:28-32]
17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out My Spirit upon all flesh:
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams:
18 And on my servants and on my handmaids I will pour out in those days of my Spirit, and they

19 And I will show wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire and
vapor of smoke:

Scripture Basis to Receive the Holy Spirit

Lk 24:49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of
Jerusalem, until you be endued with power from on high.

Acts 1:4 And being assembled together with them, Jesus commanded them that they should not
depart from Jerusalem, but "wait for the promise of the Father, which," saith He, "you
have heard of Me."
5 For John truly baptized with water: but you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days
hence.

Mt 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but He that cometh after me is mightier
than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and
with fire.

Acts 1:8 But you shall receive Power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and you shall
be witnesses unto Me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the
uttermost part of the earth.

Acts 2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one
place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the
house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit
gave them utterance.

Mk 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe: In My name shall they...speak with new
tongues.

Acts 2:38 ...you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as
the Lord our God shall call.

Acts 10:44 While Peter yet spoke these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the
word.
45 ...on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.

Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they
spoke with tongues, and prophesied.
Lk 11:13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more
shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask Him?

Why Speak In Tongues?

1 Cor 14:2 For he that speaks in an unknown tongue speaks not unto men, but unto God: for no
man understands him; howbeit in the Spirit he speaks mysteries.
4 He that speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself,...
5 I wish that you all spoke with tongues.
14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.
17 For you truly give thanks well, but the other is not edified.
18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than you all.
22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign,...to them that believe not: prophesying serves for them which
believe.
39 ...forbid not to speak with tongues.

Is 28:11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.
12 To whom he said, "This is the rest wherewith you may cause the weary to rest; and this is the
refreshing:" yet they would not hear.

Acts 2:11 "...we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God."

What Happens When You Pray In Tongues?

Jn 7:37 Jesus said, "If any man thirst, let him come unto Me, and drink.
38 He that believes on Me, as the scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of Living
Water."
39 (But this spoke He of the Spirit, which they that believe on Him should receive: for the Holy
Ghost was not yet given, because that Jesus was not yet glorified).

Rom 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helps our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as
we ought: but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be
uttered.
27 And He that searches the hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because He makes
intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

Jude 20 But you, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy
Ghost,
21 Keep yourselves in the love of God.

Jm 5:16 The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

Things the Holy Spirit Will Do For You

The Holy Spirit is the Power of God, and that Power is living in me!
1 Cor 12 The Gifts of the Holy Spirit will operate in me.

Gal 5:22 The fruit of the Holy Spirit will be manifested in me. The Gifts are for power, the fruits are
for character.

Jn 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter (Helper), that He
may abide with you for ever.

Jn 14:18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. (Jesus will come to me through the
Holy Spirit.)

14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name, he shall
teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said
unto you. (The Holy Ghost comes to us in the name of Jesus, so that we may go to others in
Jesus name.)

Jn 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the
Spirit of Truth, which proceeds from the Father, He shall testify of Me:
27 And you also shall bear witness (testify)...

Jn 16:12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but you cannot bear them now.
13 Howbeit when He, the Spirit of Truth is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not
speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show
you things to come.
14 He shall glorify Me: for He shall receive of Mine, and shall show it unto you.
15 All things that the Father has are mine: therefore I said, that He shall take of Mne, and shall
show it unto you.
25 I (Holy Spirit) shall show you plainly of the Father.

Jn 14:20 At that day you shall know that I am in my Father, and you in Me, and I in you. (The Holy
Spirit shall reveal to us that Jesus is in His Father, we are in Jesus, and Jesus is in us.)

1 Jn 4:4 Greater is the Holy Spirit in me than the devil in the world.

Rom 8:11 He that raised up Christ Jesus from the dead shall also enliven my mortal body by His
Spirit that dwells in me.

1 Cor 2:12 ...we have received the Spirit of God that we might know the things that are freely
given to us of God.
2:9-10 God has revealed "the things which God Has prepared for them that love Him"...unto us by
His Spirit.

Eph 3:3-5 Revelations and mysteries are now revealed unto His holy apostles and prophets by the
Spirit. -- By speaking in tongues and interpreting we know the revealed wisdom of God.
1 Cor 2:7 We speak (in tongues) the wisdom of God in a mystery (1 Cor 14:2), even the hidden
wisdom (Prov 2:7)
13 Which things we speak...in the words...which the Holy Ghost teaches...

James 3 The Holy Spirit tames our tongue.

Eph 6:18 The Holy Spirit enables us to do spiritual warfare and intercession.
