G1 Vane Shear Test

APPARATUS

1. Vane shear apparatus

2. Grey soil
3. Specimen container
4. Calipers

PROCEDURE

1. Prepare Soil sample and put into the sample container.

2. Put the sample container with the sample at the base of the vane shear apparatus.
3. Lower the vane shear gently into the sample to their full length.
4. Start the machine and operate the torque applicator handle on the sample by return of
the strain-indicating pointer or rotation of the drum.
5. The rotation of the vanes must be at a uniform rate and suitable to operate the torque
applicator handle until the sample fails.
6. Record the final reading.
7. Repeat step 1 until 6 using different degree of saturation of the soil.

G1 Unconfined Compression Strength Test (UCS Test)

APPARATUS / MATERIALS

Compression Machine (Digital tritest 50 load frame)

Soil trimmer
Knife
Vernier calipers
Aluminium container
Oven
Undistributed specimens (grey clay)

PROCEDURE

1. Prepare undistributed specimens (grey clay).

2. Mix the soil and water were to produce a saturated soil (grey clay). Produce 3 types of
samples with different moisture content. One of the samples needed to be fully
saturated soil.
3. Put the sample on the trimmer to shape it into a cylinder by cutting the edges of the
sample after mixing it.
4. Trim the sample until its diameter is 38 mm and 76 mm in height.
5. The compression machine must be calibrated before the sample is place into the
machine to be test.
6. Weight the sample then place on the compression machine. The sample must at the
center and touch the plate.
7. Turned on the machine. Record the proving ring gauge reading for every 0.2 mm of
the displacement gauge reading. Record the data until the sample fail or it reach 20%
of vertical displacement.
8. Weight the sample then put in the oven.
9. Repeat the steps for other samples.
10. Weight the samples after 24 hours in oven.
11. Use the formula that for this experiment :
