1.Why do we study communication? Why is it important to try to improve our communication competence?
Which of the reasons discussed seem most important to you?
We study communication because of the social, personal and workplace benefits of communicating
competently and the need to improve our communication skills. It is important to improve our communication
competence because there are always ways one can do things better, it is an essential thing because one has to learn
how to be in groups , be able to communicate , listen and problem solve.The most important reason has to fall under
the essential skills for college students. I agree because I also am a college students and many people do really not
know how to communicate with others or even do a simple group project with others. I also am a college student
and most of the studies show that those interpersopnal skills and communication skills are what most of the students
like me lact.
2.What are the myths of communication discussed? Did you previously believe these myths - why/why not?
#1 Communication is a Cure-all ( solution to everything , makes you realize things you would not realize if you did
not talk about things, hence for example a relationship either involving a breakup or misunderstanding), #2
Communicating is just common sense, ( no need to really think , it should come out natural since there is no need to
study or get training) #3 communication quantity equals quality

- its a cure-all

-youre either good or bad at it- you cant learn how to be better

The Communication Process


-Communication is a transaction
-Linear Model :
Sender>Message>Channel > Receiver
(Noise) - anything that interferes with the message
-Interactive model:
Ping-pong ( two way )
-Transactional model
We are all sender-receivers

Communication competence
-Effective and appropriate to the context ( social , personal , workplace)
-Understanding the rules ( explicit and implicit)
-Skills, sensitivity, commitment ( I want it to be productive , not necessarily a verbal commitment), ethics
-A we orientation not me

Creating a communication climate


-The result of repetitive episodes
-Constructive : open and supportive
-Destructive : closed and defensive
-Patterns of communication ( leading to climate)
Competitive: MEGA
Cooperative: MIGA
