This chapter gives information to the crew in case of engine failure occurring
during the flight.

R It is in all cases necessary to check, prior to departure that the following


R requirements are satisfied.

R 1) On legs over mountains : with one engine out, the net flight path must be
checked to clear the obstacle on the climb part by 1000 ft and on the drift
down part by 2000 ft using the "EN ROUTE NET FLIGHT PATH" (8.12.01 p. 3) and
"DRIFT DOWN NET CEILING (8.12.01 p. 2) graphs.
If the flight level and gross weight selected do not allow to clear the en
route obstacles a point of no return (PNR) must be determined.

If an engine failure occurs after the PNR, the aircraft will drift down on
course. If the failure occurs before the PNR, the aircraft will have to turn
back.

NOTE : 1. In case of engine failure, fuel consumption for the flight will not
be greater than with both engines operative + 10 %.

2. If severe icing conditions are encountered, ice formation may build


up on non heated structure and therefore the ceiling will be reduced
by 2000 ft.

R 2) Maximum diversion distance : the maximum distance from an adequate aerodrome


R must be shown lower than the regulatory maximum diversion distance (8.l2.04
R p 7-8).

IN FLIGHT ENGINE FAILURE

In the event of an engine failure during the cruise a descent to a lower altitude
must be expected.

1. IF OBSTACLE PROBLEM EXISTS

In order to maintain the highest possible level, the drift down procedure
should be used.

The drift down procedure requires maximum continuous thrust on the remaining
engine at a speed close to best lift over drag ratio dependent upon aircraft
weight and altitude (see graph 8.12.03 p. 2).

If, having reached drift down ceiling altitude, obstacle problem persists,
the drift down procedure is continued to make an ascending cruise.

If, after drift down, obstacles are cleared, the subsequent cruise should be
made using either, the long range cruise (LRC) by adjusting speed as a
function of aircraft weight, or, by maintaining the speed given at the start
of the LRC.

NOTE : Due to the fact that the LRC speed is higher than the drift down
speed the cruise will be made at an altitude lower than the drift
down ceiling. (See graph "ONE ENGINE GROSS CEILINGS 8.12.03 p. 3).

Drift down procedure is not necessary, a descent at maximum cruise thrust
(M 0.8/340 kt) is recommended in order to save time.

As soon as a possible altitude for LRC is acquired (see graph "ONE ENGINE
CEILINGS 8.12.03 p. 3) the cruise will be made using either, the LRC, or, by
maintaining the speed given at the start of the LRC.

It should be noted that in order to maintain the aircraft to the highest


possible level during cruise, the beginning of the LRC may be performed with
the remaining engine at maximum continuous.

MAXIMUM DIVERSION DISTANCE (JAROPS 1.245)
Determination of 60 minutes maximum diversion distance (JAROPS 1.245)

The maximum distance from an adequate aerodrome along any route operated is
determined using the following computations conditions in accordance with the
interpretation of the JAR-OPS 1.245.

Reference Weight : the aircraft gross weight after one hour of flight, having
taken off at sea level at the maximum structural takeoff weight given by the
flight manual.
ISA conditions.
No wind.
Diversion level after engine failure : FL 170.
Single engine diversion speed schedule : MMD/VMO.

The maximum diversion distance value is given in the following table :
