Cold Mix Technology
What is
CRRI--Bitchem Cold Mix technology?
CRRI
Cold Mix technology is field application of mix design based
on tailor-made CRRI-Bitchem cold mix binders with the
available IRC recommended aggregates through modified
HMP plant or site mixing without need of any heating in an
environment-friendly manner.

It is not simply supply of ordinary bitumen emulsions.

It is the entire value chain of technology from laboratory mix

designs, supply of tailor made cold mix binder and overseeing
the entire mixing, laying & rolling activities through technical
support and supervision services.

Technology for
Rural Roads
Surface Dressing
Premix Carpet

Pothole Repair
Procedure for construction of open graded
premix carpet (using hot mix plant)
The blended aggregates of 13.2 mm and 11.2 mm nominal sizes in
2:1 ratio, as per the specified requirement, shall be charged in the
hot mix plant which shall be used without heating arrangement
and with suitable modification for incorporation of emulsion.
The cold mix binder in required quantity approximately(6 percent
by wt. of aggregates) shall then be added into wet aggregate
and mixed for two minutes to get uniform coating.
Prolonged mixing shall be avoided as it will uncoat the aggregates.
The cold mixed open graded premix may also be prepared in a
concrete mixer.
The required quantity of emulsion of tailor made cold mix binder
shall then be added and mixed with aggregates for two minutes
The cold mix while indicating brown colour shall be discharged into
trolleys to transport to the construction site
Compaction of cold mix with 8-10 tone roller shall be carried out to
get the finished premix carpet surface

Why This Technology?
COLD MIX HOT MIX
No heating required. Pollution free Green Emission of Air Pollutants
Road Concept

Heating cost is completely saved and is High Energy Requirement

also environment friendly

Faster Progress Completes 1km in 3-4 days with Low Output for Mix Production and Laying
proper manpower and support (by using Concrete work in rains / cold
Mixer)

Local & semiskilled labor can execute the Loss of Adhesion at High Altitude Due to
work. sudden drop of Temperature

No chance of accident of labor Maximum chance of accident of labor

during work execution
Advantages of
CRRI Bitchem Cold Mix Technology
2-3 times faster progress using existing facilities at site without
any extra investment in capacity building or equipments.

Green Technology: Non polluting process , no heating, saves

fuel and 90% energy efficient.

Highly durable - contains anti-stripping properties, performing

better than Hot Mix roads.

All weather construction- during monsoons and cold winters

on dry days.
Benefits to India

Social-
No adverse effect on health.
Friendly to local construction workers.

Economical-
Higher progress, faster connectivity, avoids escalations.
Eradicates need of subsidized fuel equivalent to 3375 million
INR.

Environmental-
1,500 liter per Km means annually programme of 30,000 km
can save the nation 45 million liter and 145.35 million kg
carbon footprints
Bitchem is the largest cold mix technology company in India.

Approved by various PWDs in India.

Since 2015, Successfully completed more than 2500 km roads

in India till date.. credentials available.

Under Exclusive Cold Mix Technology License from CSIR-CRRI

on Pan India Basis.

Bitchem deploys well-trained Technical services to provide

error-free construction a site.

5 Years performance evaluation report of Bitchem cold mix

conducted by CSIR-NEIST, Jorhat, Assam found performance
of Bitchem cold mix superior than conventional hot mix.
Why CRRI chose
Bitchem only for this
license ?
NRRDA in 11th 5 year plan in 2007 launched its R&D objectives
to promote Cold Mix Technology in rural roads for progress,
environment friendly and all weather construction.

In 2008, CRRI & NRRDA indentified Assam as State Partner to

pilot Cold Mix.

IIT Guwahati was STA to evaluate performance of Cold Mix,

Bitchem was the execution partner.

In 2009, NRRDA directed Govt. Of Assam to utilize 500 Kms of

Cold Mix Technology.

Bitchem has Certificate of Field Use PWD Assam for over

1600 Km.
In 2013, Five year performance evaluation of Cold Mix was
conducted by CSIR-NEIST, Jorhat for Bitchem Cold Mix.

Pan India License from CSIR-CRRI for Cold Mix Technology

Bitchem has credentials of large-scale demonstration of cold

mix technology in various States of the country.
History of Cold Mix Technology
Partnership between CRRI & Bitchem
In 2007, CRRI develops laboratory and field case-studies in
2007.

Since 2008, Bitchem start field performance evaluation in

Assam under NRRDA support.

In 2010, World Emulsion Congress held in Lyon, France invites

CRRI & Bitchem for presentation of cold mix joint paper on
cold mix technology.

In 2011, CRRI grants NE India License and East India License to

Bitchem.

What is CRRI-
CRRI-Bitchem
Cold Mix Binder?

And what makes it different from

other emulsion in the market ?
Regular Bitumen Emulsion in the market is mainly RS1, MS, SS-1
or CSS-1, SS-2 Cationic Bitumen Emulsion as per IS 8887:2004.
These are only for spraying purpose to be used in Tack Coat
and Prime Coat application and few of them may be tried for
cold mix applications. IRC mentions about tailor made
bitumen emulsions for appropriate cold mix design.

It is manufactured with certain performance additives and

anti-stripping agents and possesses setting characteristics
required for the particular climatic zone and aggregate
conditions.
CRRI-Bitchem Cold Mix Binder is a mix design based tailor
made bitumen binder. The main feature of this mix design
process is to identify and optimize the binder as per the
aggregates available from any source in India i.e. dusty
aggregates, soil coated aggregates, clean aggregates,
damp aggregates, pea gravel aggregates or (lime mix)
aggregates.

This binder exceeds IS 8887 : 2004 specification of MS and SS-2

regular emulsions and is proven as most ideally suited for cold
mix applications in our countrys conditions for OGPC, MSS,
SDBC and BM.
Type of Construction as per
IRC SP: 100: 2014 Guidelines
CRRI developed Cold Mix technology is now a mainstream
technology and can be utilized for following applications as per
recently released IRC SP: 100: 2014 Guidelines-

CRRI-BITCHEM COLD MIX (OGPC & Seal Coat)

CRRI-BITCHEM COLD CARPET (MSS)

CRRI-BITCHEM COLD CONCRETE (SDBC)

CRRI-BITCHEM COLD STRUCTURE(BM)

Will purchasing of CRRI-
CRRI-Bitchem
Cold Mix Binder be more costlier ?

Bitchem operates depot concept depending upon the volume

of works in the State and would make it most ideally available at
reasonable prices equivalent to packed Bitumen VG-30 prices in
the State.
Cost Implication

Initial Cost of Green Roads item to item is 10-15 % higher

And, 2-3% total project cost.

But, It lasts 50% longer than Hot Mix

and hence saves min. 35 percent
of the total cost
How we can start Cold Mix in on going
works?

NRRDA recommends that in case of any extra cost of converting

existing works from Hot Mix to Cold Mix technology, the same
shall be allowed to be adjusted with savings.

NRRDA endeavor to scale up to Green and environment friendly

road technology needs to be harnessed by all states in the
country. It suggests Zero extra cost to the state Exchequer.
