Lesson: Electromagnet

Unit Overview
Main Idea (Claim) Summative Assessment
- There are several properties of - Case Study (how compasses work)
magnets
- There are several ways to create
magnets
Biblical Worldview
- Humans can create magnets to
fulfill the Cultural Mandate

Guiding Questions Objectives (know/understand/do/value)

- What is an electromagnet? - The student will be able to distinguish
- How to make an electromagnet? the south pole of the magnet from the
- What is the difference between north pole with another magnet.
electromagnet and regular - The student will be able to construct
magnet? an electromagnet.
- Why does electricity create
magnets?
- Why do we need to know how to
make electromagnets?
- Are electromagnets better than
regular magnets?
- How do we know which is the north
pole and which is the south pole?
- Are there any difference between
the south pole and the north pole
in magnets?
Time Instructional Procedures and Strategies
Beginning the Lesson
(5 - The teacher will lead the students on a silly debate (Magneto vs. Darth
mins) Vader)
The teacher will ask the class Eight graders, if Magneto and Darth
Vader are pushed into a fight, who do you think would one? If you think
its Magneto, go to the right. If you think its Darth Vader, go to the
left.
- Once divided, ask a student who chose Magneto why he chose him. If
the other team does not rebuke, ask a person from the other team why
Darth Vader would win. Try to make everyone in class state their
opinion.
- Once four minutes are up, let them return to their seats and discuss
the topics of today. The teacher could say, Okay class, last time we
talked about magnets and its properties. Today we will be talking about
(1-2 electromagnets and eventually making them. We will also try to find
mins) out which end is the south pole and which end is the north pole.
Developing the Lesson
(1-2 - A demonstration from the teacher on how to create an electromagnet.
mins) The teacher will wrap a copper cord on a nail. Then the teacher attach
the cord on a battery. To demonstrate that it is a magnet, the teacher

will test it on the paper clip.

(5 - The students will be divided into pairs and starts constructing their own
mins) magnets with batteries, copper wires, and nails that are provided by
the teacher. The teacher will give one pair a battery, a wire, and a nail
(15-20 after they have grouped up. The teacher will also give them a magnet
mins) and a paper clip to test their magnets.
- After they constructed their electromagnets, the teacher will tell them
to find out which one is the south pole and the north pole. They are
allowed to discuss with their partner. They could experiment with the
(10-11 available magnet because opposite poles attract.
mins) - The student will create a report paper using the templates given by the
(5 teacher, on the paper there will be questions that students must solve
mins) in pairs. There will be pictures of various electromagnets and they will
determine which part is the south pole and which is the north pole by
experimenting with their own electromagnets. The teacher needs to
warn the students beforehand that they might need to change their
electromagnet to mimic the position in the template.
- After they are done, students must exchange their report paper with a
different group to have them assessed. The questions in the template
that are able to be discussed in class.
Closing the Lesson
- Each student will receive a blank card, then they will write their name
and their questions for the day is or anything they have learned from
the class.
- That is their ticket to end the lesson
Formative Assessment Differentiation
- When they created a functioning - Visual: Illustration by the teacher
electromagnet - Auditory: Teachers instruction and
- Report paper that will be assessed discussion
by peers. It is to test their ability in - Kinesthetic: Creating the
determining the south pole of electromagnet
magnets from the north pole. It is
also have them analyze the use of
magnets in life.
