Literacy concepts/skills addressed:

Scale- The concept used to promote literacy development in this prop is functions of print. It
incorporates the skill of conveying a message or communicating information because the scale is
used for describing the level of pain a patient is in. I would use this prop to build in the area of
literacy by having the children rate their level of pain using the chart.

Skeleton- The concept used to promote literacy development in this are forms of print. This is a
diagram that is used every day to make us more aware of what the human body entails. I would
use this prop to build in the area of literacy by having the children observe and talk about the
diagram with me or their peers.

Open/Closed Sign- The concept used to promote literacy development in this is print
awareness. The sign incorporates the skill of functions of print because it is used to let customers
know when the office is opened or closed. I would use this prop to build in the area of literacy by
familiarizing the children with the words open and closed and using the sign in during their times
of dramatic play.

Appointment Sign-in- The concept used to promote literacy development in this is functions of
print. The skill incorporated would be that it is used to convey a message. By the patient using
this sheet the doctor knows that they have arrived. I would use this prop to build in the area of
literacy by having the children practice signing in as patients.

Body Part Cards- The concepts used to promote literacy development in this is print
awareness, and picture support. Children are learning the skills of concept of letter word, and
conventions when using these cards. They learn that there needs to be a certain amount of
space between each letter, and also that words are read from left to right. I would use this prop
to build in the area of literacy by having the children look through the cards to familiarize
themselves with body parts, and also use them to let the doctor know where they are hurting
or having pain.
