1 Introduction
1.1 Purpose
This procedure shall ensure that a case of death onboard a Seadrill unit is handled in
accordance with external and internal requirements.

1.2 Scope and applicability


This procedure is applicable to Seadrill Mexico Region.

1.3 Responsibilities
QHSE Manager is responsible for the content of this document. The document shall be
approved by Mexico Region Senior Vice President.

Rig Manager, Offshore Installation Manager, Mexico Region Medical Advisor and the Rig
Medic are responsible to ensure that this document is applied in their rig organization or
department.

2 Requirements
2.1 General Process
Role Responsibility
Offshore Installation Manager Responsible to liaise with local authorities and shore based
(OIM) management in compliance with local requirements for
handling and investigation as applicable.
Medic Responsible to conduct all direct interface for handling,
processing, data collection and reporting

2.2 Death caused by disease


Role Responsibility
Medic Inform the Offshore Installation Manager (OIM)
immediately. Take measures to ensure that no
person(s) can walk in on the deceased
unintentionally (e.g., lock the doors).
Inform the company physician or doctor on duty on
land immediately.
Take the necessary steps for special transport.
Complete a detailed report in the medical log.

2.3 Death caused by injury


Role Responsibility
Medic Cover the deceased.
Inform the OIM immediately.
Inform the company physician or duty doctor on land
immediately.
Wait for investigating authorities (if any) to arrive
and follow orders given by the OIM.
Cooperate with the investigating authorities to
ensure that the facts from the occurrence are as
correct as possible.

2.4 Responsibility and organization


Role Responsibility
Offshore Installation Responsible for reporting to the relevant authorities and for
Manager (OIM) organizing transportation of the deceased.

Medic In accordance with instructions from the duty doctor (or


company physician), the Medic is responsible for giving or
stopping treatment when required.
Local HR Department Responsible for informing the next of kin in cases where
death is caused by disease.

Chief Steward/Camp Boss Responsible destroying or disposal of affected mattress and


linens under direction of OIM.

The Medic shall have an assistant when performing the necessary preparations before the
deceased is transported ashore. The Medic shall bear in mind the ethical aspects of caring
for the dead and carefully consider whom he or she asks to be an assistant. The Medic shall
inform the designated assistant in advance.
If there is a separate room for patients connected to the hospital, this will be used for caring
for the deceased. If such a room does not exist, the deceased will be cared for in his or her
cabin or a vacant cabin. Considering hygienic and emergency preparedness aspects, one
should avoid using the hospital for these purposes.

Care should include the following:


1. Cover the bed or bench being used with plastic.
2. Remove possible vomit, urine, feces, and/or blood.
3. Insert a tampon in vagina and rectum.
4. Tie up the chin and close the eyes (dressing may be taped to cover closed eyes).
5. Use a name tag, including date of birth and date of death attached to the big toe.
6. Wrap the deceased in a sheet and put in a body bag. Mark the bag with the name of
the sender and recipient (normally the nearest hospital, or as directed by shore based
contact). In cases where a helicopter or airplane is used as transport, the packing
method should be approved by the relevant authorities.
7. Make a list of the valuables and belongings of the deceased. Deliver the list to the
OIM to sign. Belongings shall be packed and sent to shore based management for
forwarding to next of kin.
8. Inform the OIM when everything is ready. Storage and means of transportation (boat
or helicopter) is decided by the OIM in consultation with Client support as appropriate.
9. In cases where there is danger of infection connected to transporting, handling, and
packing of the deceased, the packing must be marked in accordance with directions
from relevant health authorities and a clearly visible yellow marker must be attached.
10. It may also be necessary to send equipment/linens ashore as special waste for
destruction. In such a case, the package must be distinctively marked: SPECIAL
WASTE/DANGER OF INFECTION.

3 Risk evaluation
The assessed risks with in this procedure involve relevant heath and safety requirements.
This procedure also has specific risks associated with the possibility of the use of
miscommunications and miss documentation of local / legal health requirements.
