SECTION 1 INTRODUCTION
Hach provides pH and ISE meters for applications from pH
measurements to accurate Ion Selective Electrode work. This
manual describes the operation and use of the Hach Model EC10
Portable pH/mV/Temperature Meter.

The Model EC10 features a custom digital LCD display which

simultaneously displays temperature and measurement results.
This meter has all the features of a simple pH meter plus a
millivolt mode, sealed keypad, electrode holder, tilt-stand,
ergonomic design and battery or line power.

Figure 1 Hach Model EC10 pH/mV/Temperature Meter

The electrode holder allows the user to store the electrode and meter
in one convenient package when not in use. The electrode holder is
designed with a chamber at the bottom to hold a cotton ball which
has been saturated with pH Electrode Storage Solution or pH 7
buffer. This creates a humid environment that allows the electrode
bulb to remain hydrated when not in use. In addition, the electrode
cable may be tucked securely out of the way under the flap on the
inside of the electrode holder (see Figure 2 Electrode Holder).

3
Figure 2 Electrode Holder

The flip-stand allows easy viewing when the EC10 is used as a

benchtop meter. Fold the flip-stand flat for field use (see Figure 3
Flip-stand).

Figure 3 Flip-stand

2.4.4 Millivolt Measurements
The Model EC10 Meter can be used to measure absolute
millivolts. The millivolt mode is useful when performing
potentiometric titrations or preparing calibration curves. Absolute
millivolts are displayed with 0.1 mV resolution in the range of
-1600.0 to +1600.0.

Access the absolute millivolt mode by pressing the MODE key

until the small arrow icon is above mV.

9
Detailed instructions for any Hach electrode are given in the
electrode instruction manual. Titration instructions are included
in the Hach ORP Electrode Instruction Manual, or in standard
analytical chemistry texts.

2.4.5 Temperature Measurement

The meter displays temperature in the range of -5.0 to +105 C
simultaneously with sample results. If a temperature probe is
properly connected, actual temperature measurements are
displayed in the prompt line followed by ATC. For results
greater than 100 C, the decimal is deleted.

2.5 Automatic Shut-off Function

The EC10 meter is equipped with an automatic shut-off feature to
prolong battery life. The meter will automatically shut off after 20
minutes from the last key press. Press the I/O key twice after
automatic shut-off to re-power the instrument.

10
SECTION 3 CALIBRATION PROCEDURES
3.1 pH Measurement Basics
Perform a one or two buffer calibration before pH is measured.
Hach recommends performing a two-buffer calibration using
buffers that bracket the expected sample range at the beginning of
each day. This will help determine if the electrode is working
properly and allow the slope value to be stored in memory.
Perform a one-buffer calibration as necessary to compensate for
electrode drift.

3.2 Using Powder Pillows

Hach Powder Pillows are a convenient, pre-measured single-dose
reagent package. Use nail clippers or scissors to cut the end off
the pillow and dissolve the contents in demineralized water in the
amount specified on the powder pillow package.

3.3 Autocalibration
The autocalibration feature of the Model EC10 Meter
automatically recognizes pH 4.0, 7.0, and 10.0 buffers within a
range of + 0.5 pH units. When the electrode is stable, the meter
will automatically recognize and display the temperature-
corrected value for that buffer. Press YES to enter the value in
memory.

The EC10 Meter compares actual values to theoretical values to

determine if the buffer is within range. Results greater than 0.5
pH units from the correct value will trigger an operator assistance
code. For best results, use a temperature probe. If a temperature
probe is not used, all samples and buffers must be at the same
temperature or manual temperature compensation should be used.
(See section 2.4.2 Setting Temperature Manually.)

3.3.1 Autocalibration with Two Buffers

NOTE: To cancel calibration, press the MODE key prior to accepting
calibration points.

1. Connect the electrode(s) to the meter. Choose either 4.0 and

7.0, or 7.0 and 10.0 buffers, whichever is closest to your
expected sample range.

11
2. Press the MODE key until the pH mode indicator is displayed.

3. Place the electrode(s) into either 4.0, 7.0, or 10.0 buffer. It is

preferable to start with a 7.0 buffer.

4. Press the CAL key. CALIBRATE will be displayed above the

main field. After the current calibration slope is displayed,
P1 will be displayed in the lower field. P1 indicates the meter
is ready to accept the first buffer point. Make sure the
electrode is in the correct buffer.

5. When the electrode is stable, the meter will beep and

READY will be displayed along with the temperature-
corrected value for the buffer (flashing). Press the YES key to
accept this point.

6. The display will remain fixed momentarily, then P2 will be

displayed in the lower field. The meter is now ready for the
second buffer.

7. Rinse the electrode(s) and place them in the second buffer.

Wait for a stable pH reading (the meter will beep) and for
READY to be displayed. Press the YES key to accept the
second point.

The electrode slope will be displayed in mV/pH units. SLP

appears in the lower field. The meter advances to the measure
mode and MEASURE appears above the main display. The meter
is now ready to take pH measurements. The EC10 retains this
calibration until a new calibration is entered or until power is
disconnected from the instrument.

NOTE: To view the current slope value at any time, press the CAL key.
The slope will appear momentarily. Press the MODE key to return to
measure mode without changing the current calibration.

3.3.2 Autocalibration with One Buffer

1. Connect the electrode(s) to the meter. Select one buffer, either 4.0,
7.0, or 10.0, whichever is closest to the expected sample pH.

12
2. Press the MODE key until the pH mode indicator is displayed.

3. Rinse the electrode(s) with deionized water. Place the

electrodes into the buffer and press CAL. CALIBRATE will
be displayed above the main field and the slope of the last
calibration will be displayed. After a few seconds, P1 will be
displayed in the lower field. Make sure the electrode is in the
appropriate buffer.

4. Wait for a stable reading (the meter will beep and READY
will appear on the display) and press YES. The display will
remain fixed for two seconds then P2 will be displayed in the
lower field.

5. Press the MODE key. The slope from the previous calibration
will be displayed (flashing). The slope value may be edited
using the ARROW key as in section 2.4.2 Setting Temperature
Manually on page 8 or it may be retained by pressing the
YES key. After the slope value has been entered, the meter
will proceed to the Measure mode.

6. Rinse the electrode(s) and place them into the sample. Read
the pH directly from the main display and temperature from
the lower field.

13
14
SECTION 4
TEMPERATURE COMPENSATION
4.1 Temperature Compensation of pH
pH measurements on Hach portable meters may be made with
Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC) or Manual
Temperature Compensation.

4.2 Automatic Temperature Compensation

If automatic temperature compensation is desired, a temperature
probe must be connected to the meter or a pH probe with an
internal temperature probe may be used. Actual temperature
readings will be displayed in the lower field along with the C
and ATC legends.

Automatic temperature compensation is available only in the pH

mode. Temperature corrected pH values will be displayed in the
main field.

If a temperature probe is attached and the meter is set to mV

mode, the display reflects the sample temperature only, not
temperature-compensated measurements.

4.3 Manual Temperature Compensation

Disconnect the temperature probe when performing manual
temperature compensation. The entered value will be displayed in
the lower field. Temperature corrected pH values based on the
manually entered temperature will be displayed in the main field.

When calibrating in the manual temperature compensation mode,

all buffers should be at the same temperature. If the currently
entered temperature is not the same as the temperature of the
buffers to be measured, enter the temperature as detailed in
section 2.4.2 Setting Temperature Manually.

15
SECTION 5 TROUBLESHOOTING
5.1 Self-Test
