T.A. As the class will involve a lot of interaction and activities, there will be three TAs assisting this
class. Indie Dewabharata will be helping up with the coordination. His e-mail account is:

DESCRIPTION Exploring design and strategic aspects of supply chain management, including inventory
management, network planning, information visibility, supply contract, integration, alliances,
procurement, product design, global logistics, risk management, pricing, IT and standards.
Contents will be suitable for students pursuing research and/or professional careers in the
SCM industry. Simulation games and cases will also be used for presentation and discussion.
TEXTBOOK D. Simchi-Levi, P. Kaminsky and E. Simchi-Levi, Designing and Managing the Supply Chain:
Concepts, Strategies & Case Studies, 3rd ed., McGraw-Hill, 2008.
The core contents of the chapters will be enriched and presented by groups. Do NOT spend
too much time talking about simple and obvious issues. Focus on explaining clearly key issues
of the chapter. Presentation formats should be beyond slides, with videos and/or other rich
media. Presentation should be well coordinated rather than simply division of labor and be
done within 40 minutes.
(T1) Chap 2.3-2.6
(T2) Chap 3.1-3.2
(T3) Chap 4.1-4.2
(T4) Chap 4.3-4.5

(T8) Chap 9.1-9.5
(T9) Chap 11.1-11.4
(T10) Chap 10.1-10.4
GAMES Each group designs and runs its own simulation and is evaluated based on the design of the
simulation and the resulting insight on the focused topic. Every group needs to play both
games and submit a ppt report on their simulation design, process and results. However, each
game will only be presented by five groups, pre-determined in the beginning of the semester.
Each presentation should be within 10 minutes.
(D1) Risk Pooling (5 groups with presentation)
(D2) Beer Game (5 groups with presentation)
Students should self-familiarize the operation of the games. Nonetheless, lab sessions will be
held in two separate sessions for groups remain to have questions on the operation of the
simulation games.
CASES Each case should be studied by all the students and discussed in group before class and will
be presented in class by one of the groups for no more than 30 minutes, followed by
discussion. Discussion will be for the entire class and the subsequent report, if assigned, will
be considered as homework for groups. Presentation on the cases should be focusing more on
the core issues or the core contents that may facilitate in-depth discussion. Background
information should be provided but not in a lengthy or trivial fashion. Presentation should be
coordinated rather than in fragmented segments.

PROJECTS Topics may include: innovative SC cases, Green SC, Reverse SC, logistic management, cold
chain management, Technology-enhanced SC (e.g., RFID, location-based services, Internet of
Things), Service SC, Computational cases, etc. All projects should be as close to market
and reality as possible. Project presentation needs to include: synopsis, general
background of the topic, case description and case analysis. Presentation time should be
within 25 minutes and will be followed by a short Q&A session. Project reports should be
submitted to the TA before the presentation day and can be the presentation PPT file with
necessary supplementary materials. It is encouraged to use more dynamic and lively
forms/formats for presentation. Submission of initial ideas and midterm reports on the projects
are required and the dates are remarked in the class agenda.
Projects should NOT be just a presentation on an academic paper or report. It should be a
study of certain practical issues. It is not just static statements of existing things. The
presentation should be well organized and provide insights. The background and motivation of
the project need to be provided. The project should be contributed by all team members
rather than just one or a few from the team. The presentation can be presented by fewer
members but the contents will reflect the depth and probably the effort by the team as a
whole.
GRADING Grading on the presentation will be done mainly on the group but extra points may be given
to the presenters with strong performance.
Class Participation (raising/responding to questions) 10%
Chapter Presentation (contents, slides, presentation) 20%
Cases (contents, slides, presentation) 15%
Games (reports; contents, slides, presentation) 15%
Group Projects (contribution; contents, slides, presentation) 20%
Final Exam (closed book; short essay questions) 20%
NOTES Presentation and projects will be done in groups, each consisting of up to 4 students self-
organized to the group. All written materials (handouts, slides, homework, and reports),
discussion and presentation will be in English only. Groups and individuals are responsible for
posing and responding to questions. Students are required to study chapters, cases and other
related contents before class. The connection between a chapter of the textbook and the
related case in the chapter needs to be further elaborated by both the chapter and the case
presentation groups.
Reports, presentation, and other submission should be sent to Indie at
dewabharata@gmail.com
