GENERAL DESCRIPTIONS

A three-storey reinforced-concrete office building is to be constructed in downtown

Hong Kong. The building site is virtually level, with horizontally bedded
intermediate soil about 300 mm of topsoil.

1.1 Structural layout.

All floors (two typical floors and a roof) shall have the same layout based on the
typical floor plan as shown in the accompanying Drawing, including grid
dimensions and typical beam and column positions. The floor includes a hole
used for the elevator shaft and stairwells. The floor systems consist of one-way
slabs supported by secondary beams and main beams. The floor height is 3.2 m.
All the main beams are assumed to have the same sectional dimension. So are
the secondary beams and the columns.

1.2 Durability
Exposure classification: severe; in accordance with Hong Kong Code of Practice
for Structural Use of Concrete (2004).

1.3 Fire resistance

The file resistance rating is specified as 1.5 hours duration.

1.4 Foundations
The immediate soil has an allowable bearing capacity of 1000 kPa under service
load conditions.

2. LOADS
2.1 In accordance with Loadings for Design in Hong Kong. Building (Construction)

Regulations Chapter 123B.

2.2 The specified office floor superimposed live load is 3 kPa (throughout).
2.3 The design loads for the floor (in addition to the self-weight) include a superimposed dead
load (SDL) of 2.0 kPa to account for moveable partitions, ceiling panels, etc.
2.4 A 6.0 kN/m wall load is applied around the building perimeter.
2.5 The design loads for the roof (in addition to the self-weight) include a superimposed dead
load (SDL) of 2.0 kPa.
2.6 Wind load is neglected because of the low height of the building.

3. MATERIALS
3.1 In accordance with Hong Kong Code of Practice for Structural Use of Concrete (2014)
3.2 Steel: hot rolled high yield steel for longitudinal reinforcement; hot rolled mild steel for
transverse reinforcement.
3.3 Concrete: C30 (throughout)

4. DESIGN CODE
4.1 In accordance with relevant Hong Kong Code of Practice for Structural Use of Concrete
(2014)
5. DESIGN TASKS
Students must prepare and submit structural design calculations and drawings for:
(1) The slabs of the typical floor (no moment redistribution needs to be considered).
(2) The roof system as two-way slabs without secondary beams.
(3) The continuous beams on the axis A, B, and C of the typical floor (elastic design, no moment
redistribution needs to be considered).
(4) The columns for all three stories for the location where axis B and 3 intersect.
(5) The pad footing for the column at the location where axis B and 3 intersect.

** The Elevation Shaft Hole should not appear on roof.
