The followings are the effects of the suspended solids in the cooling tower
such as the loss in the heat transfer efficiency and the accelerated corrosion
and the increase in the pumping energy because of the restricted flow.
2. The rate of the corrosion under the deposit is generally 5 to 20 times greater
than then the clean surface. This effect is caused by the creation of an
electrochemical cell between the area under the deposit and adjacent clean
surface, with the under deposit area becoming the metal losing anode in the
cell.
3. The use of the effective polymeric dispersant is done to control the
suspended solids.
4. For the proper working of the side stream filtration unit the size of the
suspended solids to be removed must be determined.
5. Critical size range of the suspended solids is 2 to 30 microns
6. The effects of the scaling and the biological fouling are the lower in the heat
transfer efficiency and the reduce flow rate and encourage in corrosion.
Slower flowrates allows more particles to settle amplifying the problem
further reducing efficiency.
7. It is stated that the layer of foul or scale measuring the 1 / 1000 inch thick
can reduce the heat transfer to increase the energy cost by as much as 10
percent
8. The use of the side stream filtration unit improve the chemical performance
in the cooling towers such as the dirty water requires more chemicals and
receive less effective treatment than the clean water. Biocides are also
consumed by the particles. In addition particles provide habitant and
nutrients that bacteria and algae need to thrive.
9. Maintaining the low particle levels in the cooling tower reduces the
inhabitants surfaces and nutrients required for the growth of the legionella.
