Course Title: THERMAL HYDRAULICS AND HEAT TRANSFER Credit Units: 4 CREDIT
UNITS
Course Level: UG Course Code: NST401 3 1 0 0 4
Course Objectives:
Thermal hydraulics is the study of hydraulic flow in thermal systems. Heat transfer in systems takes place by different modes depending on the
medium.
In a nuclear reactor typical thermo hydraulic problems involve the process of heat transfer from structural material to the coolant.
Course material introduces the student to fundamentals of the processes involved..
Pre-requisites: NIL
Course Contents/Syllabus:
Weight age
Intensive and extensive properties of thermodynamic systems, temperature and zeroth law of thermodynamics. Conservation of
energy and the first law of thermodynamics, heat and other forms of energy, internal energy, specific heats of gases, liquids and
solids, energy transfer, energy balance for closed and steady flow systems
Heat transfer mechanisms, thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, simple steady state problems in heat conduction, concepts of
thermal resistance, thermal resistance of an infinite composite slab and hollow composite cylinder, differential equation of heat
conduction
Basic concepts, heat transfer coefficient, hydrodynamic and thermal boundary layers, important dimensionless numbers
