Course Description
Building upon concepts introduced in Human Growth and Development and carried out throughout the program, students will integrate their
knowledge of development, social factors, and developmental health. Within a multiple perspective framework, students will identify, analyze,
and critique how early experiences, and community programs contribute to individual and community developmental health.

Course Outcomes
Successful completion of this course will enable the student to:
1. Utilize evidence to identify social conditions that affect developmental and population health
2. Analyze the interrelationship between individual development and social, economic, and psychosocial gradients
3. Critique societal and community influence on individual coping and competence
4. Analyze the relationship between early learning and care, education and community programs on developmental health
5. Discuss mechanisms of human brain development
6. Analyze cultural variation in developmental and population health
7. Explore population based practices that are conducive to the creation and sustainability of healthy communities

1.4 Examine the influence of conditions such as cultural variation, social status, living conditions, and overall health that affect
individual and community well-being
2.0 Human Brain Development and the Environment
2.1 Describe the mechanisms of human brain development in the context of lifespan development
2.2 Explain the biological progression of human brain development to further inform the significance of developmental health in
individuals and in the community
2.3 Justify the significance of brain growth spurts and the influence on developmental health in individuals and in the community
2.4 Analyze the interconnected nature of brain development and the influence of the environment in relation to developmental
health
2.5 Evaluate research evidence to support the necessity of understanding brain development and the connections to individual and
population health
