Abstract: This article was written for a speech presented at the First Latin Annual Work
Sessions of the Person Centered Approach, which took place at University Autnoma de Lisboa
st
(UAL), in Lisbon, on the 1 of March 2002.
The writer will first approach the question of the mental and emotional health of professional
health care workers, and then reflect on questions relating to occupational stress and burnout,
which are frequently found in these workers, especially those working in hospitals.
Finally, the writer will explain why and how this problem was addressed at S. Bernardo Hospital,
in Setubal, through the creation of a centre for psychological support for the professional and
voluntary workers there. The article presents a reflection on this experience, supported by
statistical data, an account of the difficulties we faced while setting up the centre, and the types
of interventions used, together with the most frequent problems we encountered in our clients.

Marital Psychotherapy in the Person-Centered Approach. In the first part there is the
bibliographic review of texts from 1960 to 2002, related not only to the marital psychotherapy,
but also to the family psychotherapy. In the second part there are some questions and
reflections, which were thought, based on the previous considerations. In the third part, the
author states her own way of working with marital psychotherapy, according to the principles of
the Person Centered Approach, and she also claims the need of other studies, not only about
the understanding of the family group, but also to differ family psychotherapy and marital
psychotherapy.
Mislearned stories
Rute Brites
Abstract: Learning difficulties constitute one of the main reasons for the search of
psychological help for children in their early school years. The concept, common in clinics, has
revealed very inclusive, with multiple specificities, although there isnt a conceptual consensus.
To those difficulties are often added, relational and behaviour problems, which need, in the first
place, a space of comprehension and, simultaneously, of psychological and psycho-pedagogic
support. Since it was impossible to have this desired multidisciplinary intervention with the
described case, Playtherapy has revealed to be the appropriate way to help this child with
learning difficulties.
Facilitated by this Playtherapy process, this child has been developing his learning capacities
and his relational skills, toward a psychological growth or, as Rogers would say, in the way of
development, towards the actualization of his potentialities.

Resumo: Este artigo uma proposta de reflexo sobre as vantagens que a Abordagem
Centrada na Pessoa, pode introduzir nos Processos de Recrutamento e Seleco de Pessoas.

Abstract: The present article it is a proposal to reflect about the advantages that the Person
Centred Approach may bring to the Processs of Recruitment and Selection of Personnel. It is
an attempt of elaborate comprehension, most of all by the testimony of the author, who
pretends to evaluate the applicability of the approach in an evaluative context.
It begins by presenting the recent developments in the work market context, emphasising from
the beginning the pertinence of the Person Centred Approach in this evolution. This first
moment is also useful to make a reference to the macro level of human resources
management, in which the Recruitment and Selection Process is inserted. In the following
moment there will be presented the conceptual frame to the referred process taking in to
account the pertinent investigation done about it. Simultaneously the possible influences of the
Person Centred Approach will be observed, firstly in the Recruitment phase and secondly in the
Selection, evolving this reflection to the enforcement of the applicability that the theory might
have in a more common organizational practice. Finally some of the Rogers proposals for the
organisations are briefly reviewed, opening some space for reflection.
In its essence, this is an article directed to the know how, based in the know how to be a person
suggested in Rogers work.
