Lesson Planning

Name: Fan Feng Date: Friday November 18th 2016 Time: Period 1

Grade Level: 9 Subject: Math Teacher Mentor: Katie McDevitt

I. Provincial Curriculum Outcome (s):

SCO: SS2: Determine the surface area of composite 3-D objects to solve problems. [C, CN, PS, R, V]

II. Learning Objective(s) / Goal (s) (Big Ideas, Key Questions)

Students will be able to review how to calculate the area of triangle, rectangular, circle. And then
students will learn about surface area of rectangular prism, triangular prism and cylinder.

III. Lesson Rationale:

Why are you teaching this lesson? What is the overall purpose of this lesson?
What requisite skills do students need in order to access the lesson & participate fully in this lesson?
How does this lesson fit in the prescribed curriculum?
How does the lesson build on previous lessons or previous learning?

IV. Materials & Resources:

-Handouts (handouts for interactive notebook,
-mini whiteboards +markers
-Math interactive book
-3 Tuna Cans + 3 Cans of chickpeas (Cylinder)
-6 tape boxes

V. Technology Used:
- PowerPoint
- Smart Board

VI. Learning Cycle:

1. Opening: (10 mins)

a. -introducing the lesson objective and review of the area formulas for rectangular, triangle and
circle, and then play a game, show students questions on the PowerPoint, and ask students to
write down their answers on the mini white boards. (students are given some basic area
problems; exceptional learners should be able to work on them)

2. Main activities: (40 mins)

a. Ask students to brainstorm rectangular prism & cylinder & triangular prism they can find at
home. Example: toilet paper rolls, cups, water bottle, battery, tissue box, toblerone chocolate

b. Explain of how to calculate surface areas for rectangular prism, triangular prism, and cylinder,
do one questions of each with students.

c. Ask students to work in groups and measure items on the table, on each table, there will be 1
Can (tuna can/soup can) and 1 square cube manipulative, 1 tape box, Students are encouraged
to work in group and find out the surface area for all the items given. (Chart given to students)

3. Closure: (5 min)
-recap on what has been taught, go back to the example and talk about how to find surface area for all
three subjects.
-Ask question What is surface Area?
-Home learning assignment: Ask students to check at home and see if they can find any items with
shape of rectangular prism/cylinder/triangular prism, and they can choose one to measure and find the
surface area for it.

VII. Accommodation(s) for Diverse Learner(s):
-In this class, students who are on modified programs have fluctuated learning ability levels, all of them
have learning ability level falls between modified and regular studies, they have an Educational
Assistant working with students throughout the lesson, therefore, this lesson (focus on hand on
materials) will be appropriate for students on modified program.

-For language learners: I will make sure that all my questions and handouts are using simple language
and offer explanations during the classroom, students are allowed to use their dictionary in the
classroom.

VIII. Evaluation/Assessment of Student Progress:

-Walk around classroom to monitor on students progress
-Ask students questions and let them explain what they learnt and how do they measure the items

IX. Home Learning Assignment:

- Ask students to check at home and see if they can find any items with shape of rectangular
prism/cylinder/triangular prism, and they can choose one to measure and find the surface area for it.
