Principles of Natural Selection

1. The individuals within a population differ from one another

2. The differences are, at least in part, passed from parents to offspring
3. Some individuals are more successful at surviving and reproducing than others
4. The successful individuals succeed because of the variant traits they have
inherited and will pass to their offspring

Instructions:
Press play
Press brown fur and add friends.

1. Hypothesize which bunnies would better survive in the arctic environment.

Why?

The bunny with white fur, short tail, and long teeth will survive the arctic
environment. This specific bunny would survive because the white fur would be
camouflaging and short tail would help the bunny survive because less body would
need food because the lack of food in the arctic. Long teeth to maximize the food
they would get.

2. Choose the arctic environment. What happened? Why?

Even with the brown fur as dominant, the white fur bunnies would survive the most.
This is probably because the white camouflage with the snow. It doesnt matter if
the long tail is dominant or recessive because at the end, the bunnies with short tail
will survive the most in the arctic. This is probably because it doesnt attract
predator and also means less nutrition needed by the bunny. This is also the same
with long teeth because at the end the bunnies with short teeth will survive the
most in the arctic. This is probably because short teeth are more efficient.

3. Add wolves. What happened now? Why?

Between white fur and brown fur, this would be dependent with the environment
because the wolves will eat the one that is not camouflage. So in arctic, the white
fur will survive the most and in the equator, the brown fur will survive the most.

4. Reset. Press Arctic. Give the bunny white fur. Add friends. Give food. What
happened? Why?

The population of the bunnies is increasing and then decrease and then it goes
stable and then increase again. At the end al of the bunnies died. This is probably
due to the fact that these bunnies are competitors and fight for the food.

5. Reset. Press Arctic. Click long teeth. Which one is depicted on the chart as a
larger population (long or short teeth)? Why do you think this happened?
The short teeth will survive this is probably means less nutrient needed and also fit
the food source that exist in the arctic.

6. Click on long tails. Which one is depicted on the chart as a larger population
(long or short tail)? Why do you think this happened?

The short tail will survive more probably because it didnt attract any predator and
fewer nutrients that they need.

7. Repeat this experiment (steps 1-6) with the equator environment. Which
parameters allow for a better survival rate? Why?

The brown bunnies would survive more in the equator environment. Same with in
the arctic, the one with short teeth and tail would survive more in the equator
environment. This is probably having the same reason with the one in the arctic.

Answers:

1. Bunnies with white fur would be better adapted to the artic environment and
would survive. Answers will vary.
2. Same as 1.
3. Bunnies with brown fur become extinct, leaving only the white bunnies left.
Answers will vary.
4. The bunnies reproduce and dominate the world! Answers will vary.
5. Bunnies with short teeth have a larger population. Answers will vary.
6. Bunnies with short tail have a larger population. Answers will vary.
7. Answers may vary but brown bunnies with short teeth and tails will have a
better survival rate.
