Annual solar energy output of a photovoltaic system

E = A * r * H * PR

E = Energy (kWh)
A = Total solar panel Area (m)
r = solar panel yield or efficiency(%)
H = Annual average solar radiation on tilted panels (shadings not included)
PR = Performance ratio, coefficient for losses (range between 0.5 and 0.9, default value =
0.75)

Input power calculation

Hence input power wattage = Heat removed (watts) / 3.5

Hence input wattage rating = 1750/3.5
= 500 watts (5 star rating) (compressor)

Solar panels required

compressor power required: 500W

Nos of panels required = output power required/power of each panels

= 500/120
=4.167 panels
=6 panels

Dimensions of 120 watt panel: 0.8126*1.06934 = 0.869159 m per panel

Area of panels, A= No. of panels* dimension of per panel

A=6*0.869159
A=5.2149 m

r is the yield of the solar panel given by the ratio : electrical power (in kWp) of one
solar panel divided by the area of one panel
r= electrical power (in kWp)/ area of one panel
r=(0.120/0.869159)*100
r=13.8%
Annual average solar radiation on tilted panels for Chennai is 5.08 KWh/ m/day
(shadings not included)
PR : PR (Performance Ratio) is a very important value to evaluate the quality of a
photovoltaic installation because it gives the performance of the installation
independently of the orientation, inclination of the panel. It includes all losses.
- Inverter losses (4% to 10 %)
- Temperature losses (5% to 18%)
- DC cables losses (1 to 3 %)
- AC cables losses (1 to 3 %)
- Shadings 0 % to 80% !!! (specific to each site)
- Losses at weak radiation 3% to 7%
- Losses due to dust, snow... (2%)
- Other Losses (?)
Cumulative losses: 30%
E = A * r * H * PR
E=5.2149*13.8%*5.08*0.70
E=2.55909 KWh day
