BARRYTON — THERE ARE MANY
THINGS THAT CAN GO WRONG IN
A MUNICIPALITY, BUT WHEN THE
SEWER SYSTEM NEEDS TO BE
FIXED, IT BECOMES A PRIORITY.
The Barryton Village Board announced
at its regular meeting on Wednesday,
that it received a $282,750 grant
from the State of Michigan Economic
Development Grant through the
Michigan Strategic Fund to upgrade
its sewer system. The village will be
required to contribute $80,000 on
the grant to bring the total cost of the
project to $362,750. Since the village
had already set aside money in a CD
to help with a sewer upgrade, the
matching funds were already available
once the grant came through.
“It’s time for a big tune-up,” said village
Trustee Mark PeLong. “We had the
money set aside for a rainy day like
this.”
The project will begin in approximately
two weeks and will be scheduled to be
completed this fall. The sewer, which
was installed in 1992, has begun to
experience the problems of an aging
system.
“We found out from similar
communities, that put (sewer systems)
in at similar times, have experienced
similar issues,” said village President
Deb Buehner. “Repair costs were
beginning to pile up.”
The primary problem is that the A-1
pumps, or the lift pumps, were burning
out about every two weeks due to
high demand on the system, PeLong
said. At a cost of $700 to $800 dollars
a repair, the village council decided it
was time to do something about the
failing pumps.
“The pumps were constantly needing
to be replaced,” PeLong said. “The
cost of the replacement was a big
burden on the village.”
The project also will involve
conducting a smoke and camera test
along the sewer pipes. The pipes
are made of clay and after nearly 20
years of being underground, there
is a possibility that tree roots, rocks
or other factors may have caused
breaks in the pipes, PeLong said. Not
only would this cause ground water
to leak into the system causing an
interference in the breakdown of the
sewer material, but it could cause
sewage to leak into the ground water.
In addition, the project will include
dredging the sewer ponds which lie to
the east of town, across the river.

“They will be cleaned out and re-
lined,” PeLong said. “They will be
nice and clean when we start the new
system.”
This was the first time the village has
applied for a grant through the State
of Michigan Economic Development
Grant, a process that is always
difficult, Buehner said.
“I didn’t think we were going to get
(the grant),” she said. “Whenever
you’re working with a new agency, you
have to make sure all your ducks are
in a row and all the requirements are
met.”
