My name is Alex Zhen and I am a first-year undergraduate student at the University of

Washington and intending to major in Environmental Sciences and Geological Information
Systems. I would like to apply for the position as a volunteer researcher for the endangered
species and climate change research program in California this summer. I am an excellent choice
for this research program because I have lots of field work experience, fair amount of knowledge
on conservation, skilled at collecting data, eager and motivated to learn about the effects of
climate change on different species. I would love the opportunity to learn more about what you
guys do and also, I can have a deeper knowledge on conservation and effects of climate change.

During the summer of 2015 I interned at the King County Public Health. This internship gave me
valuable experience in field work. Every morning I would go with the toxicologist to the polluted
Duwamish River to get samples of the toxicity of the river, survey different species that use this
river as a resource for survival, tag different species of fish and monitor their growth and
reproduction success throughout the summer. This was no easy task because there were
thousands of species living near the river. I had to be extremely organized, cautious and
observant which is important for any kind of surveying. This experience has made me feel
confident that I can do my job no matter how difficult the work is. My experience with surveying
and understanding what role diversity plays in an ecosystem makes me a superior candidate for
your research position.

I have been in AP environmental science in high school and one of the environmental studies
classes at UW. Being out once a week with my quiz section and just surveying different species
of trees in growth and diversity really taught me a lot about how diverse the environment is and
how everything depends on each other. I learned a lot about climate change and how it plants and
animals must adapt to an ever-changing environment. These classes have helped me understood
how to work together and communicate as a team which is vital to your research program.

Having lots of field work experience, great communication skills and team work skills. I can be a
great contributor to your research program. I may be reached at zhenalex0@gmail.com or

Sincerely,
Alex Zhen
