Reflection
Participating in the forum was an interesting learning experience for me. I was encouraged by
other students responses and learned from the discussions. For example, when we did the GIMP
activity, I felt dejected by the amount of time it took me to complete the activity and being
behind in posting, I began to feel overwhelmed. However, when I finally posted, I was really
encouraged by the comments from my peers and was motivated to keep going. Discussion
enhances motivation and improves the intellect (Carnegie Mellon University, 2015). When I read
my peers post, I was able to learn about the different topics from multiple perspectives. I was
able to compare my understanding with theirs and so refine my understanding. For instance,
when we discussed on the file formats for the Web and Web pages, I was able to extend my
understanding based on the postings of my peers. So, I have a better understanding with regard to
choosing file formats and the characteristics of a user friendly website.
One important lesson I have learned through the discussions in the forum is that sounding out
ideas and allowing for constructive criticism are important for problem solving and quality
production. For example, when I posted my first YouTube video, I did not realize that I did not
select the correct option for publishing so that my video could be viewed by others. One of my
peers brought this to my attention, and I was able to go back and publish the video in the correct
way. Subsequently, when I saw an unavailable video in one of my peers webpage, I understood
what the problem was and was able to share the same idea. Another notable experience was
when I had to create a banner for my webpage. When I posted my banner, one of my peers
suggested that I use a leaderboard in Canva. Even though I did not use Canva for creating my
leaderboard, her idea influenced me to explore other options (I had used GIMP), and I finally
found Bannersnack which was very manageable for me to use to create my banner.
As I walk away from this course, one of the areas that I plan to improve and extend is my
coding skills. I really enjoyed the HTML coding activity; it has arrested my interest to the point
that I would like to continue learning. I regret that I did not engage in more discussions in the
forum with regard to this area of learning.
Overall my experience was a positive one and I am grateful to my peers who assisted in my
learning by providing different perspectives to the topics we were expected to cover. I was able
to experience firsthand how through discussion students can reach out to others to solve
problems, share and increase knowledge.
