Making the Band

You the student is responsible for the following:

1. First, you will need to create an Album Cover and song title
for your first mathematically inspired record. Math, Math,
Baby, Livin La Geometria Loca, and Graphanstyle have
already been major hits, so youll need to come up with your
own album title, be creative! You will also need to complete the
Album Artwork Form to justify the math in your album
cover. Based on your album artwork, your teacher will assign
you the cost for starting up your album (either $100,000,
$250,000, or $500,000). The better or more creative the album,
the lower it will cost to get it started.

2. Next, you will need to complete the Making the Band

Financial Form to make decisions for your album production
and release. You will need to add up your initial costs, monthly
expenses and create a linear equation for your Total Cost, T C.

3. Then, you will need to complete the Did they pay off? Form
to determine how much income you created from your Making
the Band Financial Form decisions. After finding your income
you will create a second linear equation for Total Income, TI &
determine when you will break-even. But there might be a
change of plansUncle Eddie has a new idea about how to
make income. Consider his offer in the Change of Plans
Form by finding a new break-even point.

4. Finally, see what the future holds for you as a musician as you
fill out the Forecasting the Future Form. You will look at
the income of projected CD sales & how they compare to
income generated from music downloads. You will identify
trends in sales, correlations, errors in predictions & possible
influential years in your CD sales to see what things you should
do the same/differently to keep generating income doing what

you love.

5. Present your Album Cover and Song Lyrics to your fans

Your designer wants some exact measurements and locations of some geometric designs
that need to be included in your album artwork so that she can recreate your greatness.
You will create two versions of your album cover: One will be on an x and y coordinate
grid with labeled vertices. The second version will be the professional & colorful version
that will go out to stores. Your album cover must include the following: the title
of your album, a circle, a quadrilateral, and a transformation of a polygon.

1. Equation of circle (not centered at the origin):

List four coordinates located on your circle:

The Start-Up Cost to Launch Your Album is: _______________________________
Your job is to not only launch the most awesome mathematical album in history, but also
to break-even with your money as fast as possible. These big wig execs want their
money back...FAST. So, you will need to make some choices, by selecting a person in
each category that you feel will help you earn back your budget. Each choice will have a
different result, so consider what you think is most important to the success of your
album.

Who will you select to be your manager?

JC is a top of the line manager. He is organized and understands the needs of the music
industry. He is intelligent and is considered by many to be one of the top future
executives in music. He has the connections and experience to launch a big album. JC
costs $3,000 a month.

Babs is a good manager. She works hard and will not leave until the job is done. It takes
her more time than most, because she doesnt have the connections, but she makes up
for it in hard work. Babs costs $2,000 a month.

Jeff is a low quality manager. If you are on a budget, Jeff is your guy. He might return
your calls. He might not. Hell do things when he feels like it. Jeff costs $1,000 a month.

Who will manufacture the CD and advertise?

CDExtraordinaire will give you the top quality product. They have some of the best
graphic designers in the country and have a portfolio of top of the line products. They
understand your needs as an artist and will work with you to translate your image to
your CD. CDExtraordinaire will cost $20,000.

Madbeats is an up and coming CD maker. Currently they are short on staff, but they
have released some nice CDs lately. Their portfolio is not as polished as
CDExtraordinaire, but they deliver an adequate product. Madbeats will cost $17,500.

The Stuff is a CD producer that may be best avoided. If you like solid colors and basic
text they may be for you. Rather than have a professional photographer, they send you

to Walmart for pictures. They will be hard to contact since their phones have been
recently disconnected. The Stuff will cost $12,000.

Who would you like to produce and record you album?

Jen understands high quality music. She has received 120 Grammy nominations for her
work with dozens of platinum artists. She understands the nuisances of songs and how to
improve them even the slightest bit. If you want her on your team Jen will cost $5,000.

Troy has a good ear for music and he gets what will sell. He hasnt had a great deal of
success in the industry, but he thinks it is because of bad luck. He is easy to work with
and will help complete a quality track. Troy will cost $2,500.

Ruby enjoys music, but she is not good at her job. She accidentally has recorded over
music of past clients. She understands how to record the music, but she will not help
enhance the quality. She will work hard for you, she needs her job. Ruby will cost $1,000.

What type of travel and tour plan would you like?

Tour of the World An elaborate tour around the globe will certainly give you
worldwide exposure. Bouncing from Paris to Rome to New York playing your music in the
best arenas will be like living a dream. The dream will come with cost. You will need to
pay $10,000 a month for travel.

Born in the USA Touring around the Midwest United States may not bring the
exposure, but will certainly help your sales. You will play in decent arenas. Not the best,
but they are nice. The travel will run about $5,000 a month.

City Plan There is no place like home. You can play in the local music clubs. Travel will
be a minimum since it will be your car and gas. This will cost $300 a month.

What travel option do you choose? _______________________________

What type of lodging and accommodations suit your style?

Galloway Suites Hopping from luxury suite to luxury suite will feel like royalty. You will
always get a wonderful night of sleep on special mattresses customized for your body
type. These wonderful nights will run up a cost of $6,000 a month.

The Best Inn A hotel with all the basic amenities. No pampering, no goodies. You have
a job to do and that is your focus. These hotel stays will cost $3,000 a month.

Crackles The walls may be leaking, the thunder may shake your room, and you may
be surrounded in rats, but you are on the road for your music. The sleepless nights may
leave you disoriented and tired, but you need to save some money. These hotel stays will
cost $1,500 a month.

ALL WORK!

Usually in the music industry it takes a few months to start really making some money.
You want to make sure you can survive for at least 6 months. Write and solve an
equation algebraically to show how much your Total Cost will be after 6 months.
Show all work and write your final answer as a sentence in context!

You are able to borrow up to $1,000,000 and you are hoping that will take you through
the first year in case you arent making much money to pay back your loan right away.
Write and solve an equation algebraically to determine when your Total Cost will be
$1,000,000. Show all work and write your final answer as a sentence in context!

You are hoping that this album can keep you in business for at least 2 years, but there is
no way you want to spend more than $1,200, 000 on costs alone. Analyze whether you
will meet your goal or not and defend your answer with mathematical reasoning. Show
all work and write your final answer using sentences in context!

Use the following tables to determine how much money you will earn in Income based
on the decisions that you made in the Making the Band Financial Document.

1. Place an X in the Choice column to identify which Manager you picked in the Making the

2. Your Managers monthly revenue has a scale factor (x). To find your monthly income that is
generated from your Manager take the first number of your or your partners address and use
it as the scale factor (x).

Change of Plans?
Now your Uncle Eddie rolls into town and thinks he has a better scenario for your album.
He thinks he has cheaper initial costs and monthly expenses that will produce the same
income. You are a bit skeptical because you dont think good ol Eddie is so good with
the math equations.

Eddie presented the following Total Cost equation:

5TC 62,500m = 1,000,000 TC = total cost

m = number of months

expenses. Show work to defend your answer.
