DOW CORNING 11 Additive:
Typical Benefits: To increase the mar resistance of a wide
variety of solvent-based films by reducing surface friction.
Improves gloss, flow-out and wetting. Also used to prevent
pigment separation and flotation.
Functionality: Carbonol
Primary Polymer Systems: Same as DOW CORNING 3 additive.
DOW CORNING 54 Additive:
Typical Benefits: Designed for use in solvent-based and
high-solids systems. May work in some water-borne and powder
coating systems. In addition, may improve abrasion resistance,
water repellency and flow-out in urethane systems.
Functionality: Carbonol
Primary Polymer Systems: Same as DOW CORNING 3 additive
plus water-borne systems.
Comments: DOW CORNING 54 additive, DOW CORNING 56 additive
and DOW CORNING 57 additive are especially good for use with
higher solids and solventless coatings because they contain no
additional solvent. Care should be taken that they are added
in low enough concentrations to prevent contamination.
DOW CORNING 54 additive and DOW CORNING 57 additive may be
effective in powder coatings to improve wetting, leveling and
mar resistance and may also decrease pigment separation.
DOW CORNING 56 Additive:
Typical Benefits: Recommended for improving leveling, flow-
out, gloss and pigment dispersion in solvent-based systems.
May also work as a defoamer for some systems.
Functionality: None
Primary Polymer Systems: Same as DOW CORNING 3 additive.
Comments: See comments on DOW CORNING 54 additive.
Typically used to improve the appearance of solvent-based paints
applied by curtain coating or spraying. May also be used to
stabilize and orient aluminum flake in metallic finishes.

DOW CORNING 2-6070 Silane:
Tygical Benefits: Treatment of inorganic pigments such as
talc, clay and silica to render the surfaces hydrophobic.
Aids in reduction of grind times by improving pigment disp-
ersion. May improve adhesion of polymers to substrate when
used as a primer.
Functionality: Methoxy silane
Primary Polymer Systems: Improves adhesion when used as
a primer with acrylics, polyesters and urethanes.
Comments: Reacts with water to form methanol. Designated
as a methyltrimethoxysilane.

Typical Benefits: For water-based coatings to improve mar
resistance, leveling, flow-out and gloss. Can be used to
eliminate pigment floating. Can also be used in solvent systems

DOW CORNING 29 Additive:
'Typical Benefits: Used primarily for leveling and flow-out.
Imparts mar resistance and antiblocking. Prevents pigment float-

Primary Polymer Systems: Acrylics, epoxies, polyesters, and
urethanes.
Comments: Can be used as an additive to varnish or lacquer
overprint varnishes to improve adhesion, mar resistance, leveling
and gloss. Prevents blocking.
DOW CORNING 51 Additive:
Typical Benefits: Imparts mar resistance and slip to water-
based systems. May also be effective with certain solvent-
based systems--in particular, when an alcohol or polar solvent
is present.
Functionality: None
Primary Polymer Systems: Water-based polymer systems such as
acrylic emulsions, and some alcohol-containing solvent systems.
Comments: A water dilutable, ultra-high molecular weight sil-
icone dispersion. It can be added to water-based inks and latex
paints to impart mar resistance an3 slip.

Typical Benefits: A defoaming agent f o r water-based systems.
Functionality: None

Comments: Especially effective in acrylic emulsion paints and
inks.
Can De used in the production of water-based vehicles.
DOW CORNING 64 Additive:
Typical Benefits: Imparts water resistance to cured films.
Can provide improved mar resistance and reduced pigment floating.
Functionality: Amine
Primary Polymer Systems: Urethanes, acrylics and polyesters.

DOW CORNING 21 Additive:
Typical Benefits: To improve adhesion of a variety of polymer
systems to glass and metal substrates. Acts as a room temper-
ature curing agent for silicone resin-based coatings. Improves
adhesion and water resistance of epoxy adhesives.
Functionality: Amine-methoxy
Primary Polymer Systems: As an additive: acrylic, alkyd,
polyester, urethane and epoxy.
As a primer: Epoxy
Comments: Particularly effective with epoxy systems when
used as a primer or additive. With epoxy systems, blend and
package with epoxy curing agents only. Package stability should
be checked when used as an additive. Designated as an amino-
methoxysilane.
DOW CORNING 25 Additive:
Typical Benefits: Particularly effective in promoting adhe-
sion of a wide variety of polymer systems to glass, aluminum
and steel when used either as an additive or a primer.
Functionality: Epoxy-methoxy
Primary Polymer Systems: Acrylic, alkyd, polyester, ure-
thane and epoxy.
Comments: Of the current adhesion promoters, DOW CORNING 25
additive has generally been found to be most effective. An
epoxy-methoxy compound.

Typical Benefits: Used as an additive, promotes adhesion
of a variety of polymer systems to aluminum.
Functionality: Methacrylate-methoxy
Primary Polymer Systems: Acrylic, alkyd, polyester, urethane
arid epoxy.
Coiments: Has not been found to be effective as a primer.
Designated as a methacryloxypropyltrirnethoxysilane.

DOW CORNING 2-6032 Silane:


Typical Benefits: Used as an additive, promotes adhesion of
a variety of polymer systems to aluminum and glass.
Functionality: V i n y l b e n z y l - a m i n e - m e t h o x y
Primary Polymer Systems: Acrylic, alkyd, polyester, urethane,
epoxy and PVAC.
Comments: Has not been found to be effective as a primer.
Designated as an N-Z-(vinylbenzylamino)-ethyl-3-aminopizopyltri-
methoxysilane monohydrogen chloride.

DOW CORNING 2-6040 Silane:


Typical Benefits: Particularly effective in promoting adhe-
sion of a wide variety of polymer systems to glass, aluminum
and steel when used either as an additive or a primer. Improves
water resistance of some urethane adhesives.
Functionality: Epoxy-methoxy
Primary Polymer Systems: Acrylic, alkyd, polyester, urethane
and epoxy.
Comments: Over-all, an excellent adhesion pronoter. Designat-
ed as a glycidoxypropltrimethoxysilane.
