Unit Title: Algebraic expressions Name: Cynthia Espinosa

Content Area: 6th grade common core math Grade Level:6th grade
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
CCS.Math.Content.6.EE.A.2 Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers.
CCS.Math.Content.6.EE.A.2.a Write expressions that record operations with numbers and with letters standing for numbers. For
example, express the calculation Subtract y from 5 as 5 y.
CCS.Math.Content.6.EE.A.2.b Identify parts of an expression using mathematical terms (sum, term, product, factor, quotient, and
coefficient); view one or more parts of an expression as a single entity. For example, describe the expression 2 (8 + 7) as a product
of two factors; view (8 + 7) as both a single entity and a sum of two terms.
CCS.Math.Content.6.EE.A.2.c Evaluate expressions at specific values of their variables. Include expressions that arise from formulas
used in real-world problems. Perform arithmetic operations, including those involving whole-number exponents, in the conventional
order when there are no parentheses to specify a particular order (Order of Operations). For example, use the formulas V = s3 and
A = 6 s2 to find the volume and surface area of a cube with sides of length s = 1/2.

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

What purpose do variables serve?
What do variables represent in the real world?
What do algebraic expressions represent?
How does the order of operations help solve expressions?
How do we use mathematical terms to represent parts of an expression?
What do solutions of an expression represent?
How do we evaluate expressions?
Unit Summary:
In this unit, students will be learning the concept of variables and learn how to solve for that variable. They will also learn how to
translate real-world word problems into mathematical expressions, how to make use of operations to simplify expressions, and
evaluate those expressions for given values. Students will also learn mathematical terms and will be able to identify parts of an
expression with these terms. To start, students will learn what an algebraic expression represents and how word problems are
translated into expressions. Students will also understand how expressions are evaluated by substitution. Next, they will learn the
order of operations and how they are used to simplify expressions, even expressions with whole number exponents. Finally,
students will be introduced to mathematical terms that will help them identify parts of an expression. Throughout this unit students
will be asked to engage in discussion, create posters and graphic organizers, play interactive games, complete worksheets, and
take online quizzes/surveys. These activities will help you and myself assess your understanding throughout each lesson. The
activities will also provide excellent practice to apply what you learned. At the end of this unit students will be tested on everything
that they have learned throughout this unit.
