RACE 1: IOR Diamondrella Stakes 3yoF, 7F(T), $100,000.

W: THE SECRET GARDEN, 2014 grey/roan, filly (Indigent x Twilight at Sea: Blushing Groom [FR]), O: Susan Ploss,
T: Eric Scott, J: Eduardo Vargas, BR: Forest Retreat Farm (CT). #122 SW / #120 NSW NTG

PP 1 #122 1st *THE SECRET GARDEN (SP) 6L Stalked closely, took over in stretch and pulled
away.
PP 5 #120 2nd Angeles (SA) 1L Tried to go with TSG, couldnt catch him but held for
2nd.
PP 3 #120 3rd Tallgrass (MB) no Set paced, tried, tiring late.
PP 2 #122 4th Diamond Waves (JL) Pressed pace, ran out of steam.
PP 6 #120 5th Purely Piscean (VP) In close, tried to go through seam on rail, checked.
PP 4 #120 6th Lia Fail (KP) - Taken outside for racing room, tired.

Comments: The Secret Garden had the perfect ride today, stalked the pace closely and then in the stretch took
command and never looked back. Angeles sat just off TSG heels and tried to go with him in the stretch but tired and was
just able to get by T in the stretch. Tallgrass, possibly a bit fresh in his 3yo debut, set a fast pace and tried to wire the field
but was unable to hold them off. Diamond Waves looks to have needed this one and pressed the fast pace tiring late.
Purely Piscean tried to sneak through a hole on the rail but was cut off and jockey had to check at the last minute
upsetting his momentum. Lia Fail was hung wide the entire trip and tired.

Notes: Would love more info on the real Diamondrella besides her stakes record and produce record. What made her
significant enough to name a race after?

RACE 2: IOR Black Gold S 3yo c/g, 8.5F(T), $50,000.

W: BEACH BREAK, 2014 dark bay, colt (Arabas x Beach Bum: Bandado), O/T: Mary Hope Kramer, J: NG, BR: Americana,
(MA). #120 SW / #118 NSW NTG

PP 5 #120 1st *BEACH BREAK MHK 2 Stalked in a ground saving position, thrilling stretch
duel with Amjad to just get by in the final going.
PP 4 #120 2nd Amjad KR 4 Midpack, went with BB in the stretch and refused to
back down till the final strides.
PP 2 #118 3rd Dufresne MB Pressed pace, dropped back.
PP 8 #118 4th Order Direct [IRE] CE Stalked further back than usual, ran out of track.
PP 7 #120 5th Black Moon Spell JL no From off the pace, tired late.
PP 6 #118 6th Pyrrhocorax AM Set pace.
PP 1 #118 7th Hellas KP 1 Late bid.
PP 3 #118 8th Chinatown SA - Stumbled at start and almost went down, jockey lost
irons and did his best to get them home in one
piece.
Comments: Whew! Looks like there may be a bit of a rivalry going on. Fans were on their feet screaming as Beach Break
and Amjad locked horns in the stretch drawing clear of the field with the latter only giving way grudgingly. Dufresne pressed
the pace but was unable to keep up with the fierce duel on the front end. Order Direct [IRE] was twisted in the gate at the
break and spent the race trying to make up ground. Black Moon Spell in his first start of the year looks to have really needed
this one and should really gain seasoning here. Pyrrhocorax set an honest pace but could not withstand the fierce duel in the
stretch. Hellas made a late bid but seemed distracted, possibly from the noise from the grandstand. Chinatown had the worst
of it, stumbling so badly its a miracle he kept his feet, while his jockey lost his stirrups and fought like a trooper to stay on.
Jockey was commended for sparing his mount and getting him home in one piece safely.

Notes: The Black Gold Stakes is named in honor of Black Gold, one of only two horses to win both the Louisiana
Derby and the Kentucky Derby. Black Gold is buried in the Fairgrounds infield and it is a tradition that the winning jockey
of the race places a wreath of flowers on Black Golds grave. There is also a very famous novel written by Marguerite
Henry entitled Black Gold which has kept the memory of this brave little stallion alive for generation after generation of
children.

RACE 3: INAUGURAL Lone Star Derby 3yo c/g [G2], 9F, $200,000.

W: *CENTURION, 2014 bay, colt (The Warrior Within x Let Her Cry: Mark of Excellence [GB]), O/T: Melissa Boring,
J: Russ Farrell, BR: Flicker Fusion TB Farm (SD). #122 SW/ #119 NSW NTG

PP 4 #122 1st *CENTURION MB 1 Set pace, tiring late but dug in gamely to hold off
PM.
PP 3 #119 2nd Public Morals SA no Closing late to just miss a higher placing.
PP 1 #119 3rd Culmination KP 1 Sat midpack, did not go with leaders in the stretch.
PP 2 #119 4th The Overthere VP - Stalked pace, too much to do late.

Comments: Centurion, the most experienced horse in the field, was determined to have the race his way and set a strong
pace, tiring in the stretch, he was just able to find another gear and hold of the late charge of PM. Public Morals in good
position early, may have started his final charge a bit late but was reeling C in with an impressive turn of foot and simply ran
out of track. Culmination, sat midpack early, failed to fire in the stretch. The Overthere, stalked pace but never seemed to get
involved and may not have liked the footing.

Notes: Named in honor of the great state of Texas often known as the Lone Star State. Texas is a state that
boasts a rich history in horseracing including several Kentucky Derby winners and Assault one of only twelve horses to
win the Triple Crown. Im really hoping to make this a serious prep race for the IOR Kentucky Derby in years to come, do I
need to cut back to 8.5F?

RACE 4: IOR Pan Zareta S 3/u f/m, 6F, $50,000.

W: SEND IN THE CLOWNS, 2013 chestnut, mare (Laughing Gas x Trapeze Artist: ExcellnWhirl), O: Amber Einerwold,
T: Cindy Ellis, J: Chris Lineman, BR: Glendyke (KY). #120 SW/ #118 NSW

PP 5 #120 1st SEND IN THE CLOWNS AE/CE 1 Broke on top and never looked back.
PP 2 #118 2nd Thorny Subject KP Midpack early, swung wide for run, ran out of track.
PP 4 #118 3rd China Silk Road BH 2 Stalked the pace
PP 1 #120 4th *Chihuahua Bite SA 1 Pressed pace, tired.
PP 3 #118 5th Blandishments AM no Stalked closely.
PP 6 #118 6th Happens In Vegas MHK 2 Failed to fire.
PP 7 #118 7th A Path To Thee MB - Stumbled at break, lost all chance.

Comments: Send In The Clowns, coming in off a nice allowance victory by 3, had the perfect ride and won going away.
Thorny Subject came into this race off a nice maiden win but had a bit of traffic trouble late and had to be taken wide where
she simply ran out of track. China Silk Road, stalked the pace but may have been too far back today. Chihuahua Bite the
betting favorite pressed the stiff pace set by SITC and tired. Blandishments stalked closely and looks to have needed this one.
Happens In Vegas never seemed comfortable and failed to fire. A Path To Thee stumbled at the break and lost all chance to
real in the winner.

Notes: Pan Zareta affectionately called the Queen of the Turf was a Texas bred mare born in 1910 and inducted
into the United States Racing Hall of Fame in 1972 and the Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 1999. She ran 151 races,
winning 76 and won or started in more races than any other mare in U. S. racing history. Pan Zareta equaled or set
eleven track records with her most famous win coming in 1915 when she set the world record for five furlongs in :57 1/5
seconds at Juarez, running against and carrying ten pounds more than the horse Joe Blair. This record remained for 31
years. In 1917 Pan Zareta competed against and beat Old Rosebud the 1914 Kentucky Derby winner. A hard knocking
mare, she proved infertile when retired and was sent back to the races where she died at the Fairgrounds on Christmas
Day. She is buried next to Black Gold in the Fairgrounds infield.
RACE 5: IOR Lost In The Fog S 4/u c/g, 6F, $50,000.

W: *CAT LAUGH, 2012 bay, gelding (Laughing Gas x Grey Tabby: Amazing Grey), O/T: Bonnie Holder, J: Toby Bell,
BR: Glendyke (KY). SW #118/ NSW #116 NTG

PP 2 #116 1st *CAT LAUGH BH 3L midpack early, finished flying.

PP 3 #118 2nd Grey Humour AM set pace, dueled with D.
PP 1 #118 3rd Dixon EK no got into speed duel with GH, tired.
PP 5 #116 4th Screening Room SA bumped hard with SW at start, hard ridden to
stay in touch with field, tired.
PP 4 #118 5th Swifty Morgan JL - bumped hard with SR at start and never fired.

Comments: Cat Laugh sat just off the dueling GH and D and then came flying to win going away. Grey Humour got into a
speed duel with D early and while he out finished his rival by the smallest of margins, had nothing left for the onslaught of CL.
Dixon got into an early speed duel with GH and tired. He looks to have needed this sharpening and should really improve next
time. Screening Room bumped pretty hard with SM at the start and in a sprint losing these precious seconds can hurt all
chances, better luck next time. Swifty Morgan bolted out of the gate and careened with SR both horses seeming to want the
same piece of ground at the start. The impact seemed to knock the breath out of SM and while he finished the race, he never
got involved. Stewards reviewed the start and ruled the bump a nasty accident which can happen in sprints where every
second counts. Both horses were cleared by the track vet and this is one of those results that can be tossed out for both.
They can only improve off this one!

Notes: Lost In The Fog was an Eclipse Champion Sprint Horse, favored in every lifetime start, set a stakes record for 6F in
the G3 Aristides Breeders Cup Handicap, won 10 races in a row from 5-7F, 9 of which were stakes. As famous as his race
career was, his early and tragic death was also of note. After several unusual race results he was taken to the California
Davis Veterinary School where he was diagnosed with lymphoma. Veterinarians discovered a cancerous mass on his spleen
the size of a cantaloupe, another in the membrane surrounding his spleen and a third also the size of a cantaloupe beneath
his spine. His connections believe he had been running and winning with these masses growing inside him for over a year, a
testament to what a talented and tough horse he was. The growths were deemed inoperable so he was taken home to
live out his remaining days and humanely euthanized. One of only two horses buried at Golden Gate Fields, Lost In The
Fog is buried next to Silky Sullivan.

RACE 6: INAUGURAL Lonesome Glory Steeplechase (NSW) 4/u, 16F(T), $100,000.

W: THE MAD KING, 2012 palomino, horse (Sysco Prince x Favourable Rage [FR]: Fauves), O/T: Melissa Boring,
J: Jackson Welles, BR: Flicker Fusion TB Farm (SD). #150 winners/ #147 non-winners/ #145 FTS

PP 1 #150 1st *THE MAD KING MB Pressed pace, closing late to just get by in a thriller.
PP 6 #150 2nd Avilda EK 1 Stalked closely, came with a rush to just miss first.
PP 5 #150 3rd Enterprise [GB] JL 1 Stretch bid could not hold off the final rush.
PP 4 #150 4th Bocan JS 1 Midpack early, error at the final jump cost him a
higher placing.
PP 2 #145 5th Tipsey Laird [GB] KP 3 Set pace, tried to go W-T-W, tired.
PP 3 #145 6th Silent Mercy BS - Midpack, error at final jump, tired.

Comments: The Mad King pressed the pace, biding his time till the stretch where he closed like a shot in a thriller. Avilda
stalked the pace closely and came with a late rush to be out finished late by TMK. Enterprise [GB] made a long stretch bid
and wasnt able to hold of the late closing 1st and 2nd place horses. Bocan, good position early, awkwardly jumped the last
one and had too much to do late to recover. Tipsey Laird [GB] a FTS very fresh at the start tried to take the field WTW and
tired in the lane. Silent Mercy sat midpack but was tiring in the final go around and bumped the last jump. Jockey was
backing off her in the stretch. Plenty of excuses today with some nice up and comers who can only improve off the
experience gained here today!

Notes: Lonesome Glory was an American Thoroughbred racehorse and Steeplechase specialist. He won American
Champion Steeplechase Horse a record of five times. He ran forty-two times, won twenty three races including the Breeders
Cup Steeplechase, Colonial Cup (three times) and the Carolina Cup (two times). One of a very limited number of American
trained chasers to compete successfully internationally. He was also the first American Chaser to win over one million
in purses. Lonesome Glory is buried at the National Steeplechase Museum at Camden and there is a bronze statue
erected in his honor. Also of note, Breyer Animal Creations created a likeness of him in their regular line up of model
horses several years ago.

FINAL THOUGHTS: Another great day for Texas racing with two inaugural races now in the books. Texans
sure seemed to know their horses picking the winners of 5 of the 6 races today. A new record was set with 14
trainers entering this meet (several regulars were absent!), the most ever for Space City Raceway. There were a
lot of horses hungry for wins and the fields were pretty evenly matched making handicapping a nightmare.
Melissa Boring was the leading trainer with two wins on the card including a nice derby prospect in Centurion
who won the inaugural Lone Star Derby. Laughing Gas was the leading sire of two winners on the card today
while Glendyke (KY) and Flicker Fusion TB Farm (SD) tied for top breeder. The Black Gold ended up being the
race of the day with Beach Break and Amjad duking it out till the bitter end while Chinatowns jockey was lauded
for his ability to stick like glue to the saddle even without irons and bring his mount home safely. In the Lost In
The Fog Stakes, two half-brothers out of Grey Tabby took the win and show and we ended the day with the most
demanding race, the inaugural Lonesome Glory Steeplechase where a flashy palomino son of Sysco Prince got
up just in time to take the win. I added fun facts and tidbits gleaned about some of the horses these races were
named after to help add a bit of color to these races and would welcome any additional info that might be helpful
for those of us not familiar with some of these horses or their significance to the sport of racing. Thank you so
much for coming out today and I look forward to seeing yall again in May!
