Chapter 10

Of Effectual Calling

1. Those whom God hath predestinated unto life, He is pleased in His appointed
and accepted time effectually to call

Romans Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them
8:30 he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

Romans What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath
11:7 obtained it, and the rest were blinded
Romans (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they
11:8 should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.

Ephesians In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according
1:7 to the riches of his grace;
Ephesians Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;
1:8
Ephesians Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure
1:9 which he hath purposed in himself:
Ephesians That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all
1:10 things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:
Ephesians In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the
1:11 purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:
Ephesians That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.
1:12

II Thessalonians But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the
2:13 Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through
sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:
II Thessalonians Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord
2:14 Jesus Christ.

by His Word and Spirit, out of that state of sin and death, in which they are by
nature, to grace and salvation by Jesus Christ;
Ephesians And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins:
2:1
Ephesians Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to
2:2 the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of
disobedience:
Ephesians Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh,
2:3 fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of
wrath, even as others.
Ephesians But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
2:4
Ephesians Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye
2:5 are saved;)
Ephesians And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ
2:6 Jesus:
Ephesians That in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in his
2:7 kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

enlightening their minds, spiritually and savingly, to understand the things of God

Acts But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make
26:16 thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those
things in the which I will appear unto thee;
Acts Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee,
26:17
Acts To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan
26:18 unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which
are sanctified by faith that is in me.

Ephesians Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the
1:15 saints,
Ephesians Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;
1:16
Ephesians That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the
1:17 spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:
Ephesians The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the
1:18 hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
Ephesians And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according
1:19 to the working of his mighty power,
Ephesians Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his
1:20 own right hand in the heavenly places,
Ephesians Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that
1:21 is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:
Ephesians And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to
1:22 the church,
Ephesians Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.
1:23

taking away their heart of stone, and giving unto them an heart of flesh;

Ezekiel A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take
36:26 away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

renewing their wills, and by His almighty power determining them to that which
is good, and effectually drawing them to Jesus Christ;

Deuteronomy And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to
30:6 love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou
mayest live.

Ezekiel And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall
36:27 keep my judgments, and do them.

Ephesians Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the
1:15 saints,
Ephesians Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;
1:23
yet so, as they come most freely, being made willing by His grace.

Psalm Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the
110:3 womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.

Song of Solomon Draw me, we will run after thee: the king hath brought me into his chambers:
1:4 we will be glad and rejoice in thee, we will remember thy love more than wine:
the upright love thee.

2. This effectual call is of God's free and special grace alone, not from anything
at all forseen in man, nor from any power or agency in the creature,

II Timothy Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner:
1:8 but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;
II Timothy Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works,
1:9 but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus
before the world began,
II Timothy But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath
1:10 abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:
II Timothy Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.
1:11

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of
God:
Ephesians 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

co-working with His special grace; the creature being wholly passive therein,
being dead in sins and trespasses, until being quickened and renewed by the
Holy Spirit,

I Corinthians But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are
2:14 foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually
discerned.

Ephesians But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
2:4
Ephesians Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace
2:5 ye are saved;)
Ephesians And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ
2:6 Jesus:
Ephesians That in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in his
2:7 kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

John Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear
5:25 the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

he is thereby enabled to answer this call, and to embrace the grace offered and
conveyed in it, and that by no less power than that which raised up Christ from
the dead.

Ephesians And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe,
1:19 according to the working of his mighty power,
Ephesians Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his
1:20 own right hand in the heavenly places,

3. Elect infants dying in infancy are regenerated and saved by Christ through the
Spirit,

John Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born
3:3 again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
John Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the
3:4 second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
John Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the
3:5 Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
John That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
3:6
John Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
3:7
John The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell
3:8 whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

who worketh when and where, and how He pleaseth;

John The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell
3:8 whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
so also are all other elect persons, who are incapable of being outwardly called by
the ministry of the Word.

4. Others not elected, although they may be called by the ministry of the Word,
and may have some common operations of the Spirit;

Matthew 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen.

Matthew But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word,
13:20 and anon with joy receiveth it;
Matthew Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or
13:21 persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.

Hebrews For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the
6:4 heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
Hebrews And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
6:5
Hebrews If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to
6:6 themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

yet, not being effectually drawn by the Father, they neither will, nor can truly
come to Christ; and therefore cannot be saved:

John No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise
6:44 him up at the last day.
John It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that
6:45 hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.

John And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were
6:65 given unto him of my Father.

I John Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye
2:24 have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and
in the Father.
I John And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.
2:25

much less can men that receive not the Christian religion be saved, be they never
so diligent to frame their lives according to the light of nature, and the law of that
religion they do profess.

Acts Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given
4:12 among men, whereby we must be saved.

John 4:22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

John And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ,
17:3 whom thou hast sent.
