The megasporangium (fig. 12.51). the structure of the ovule has already
been discussed in detail. Now only developmental stages be discussed. The
ovular primordia arise on the annular meristematic ring that develops below
each collar, in the same manner as in the male cone. The ovular primordium
divides to form a ean of cells around which the three envelopes develop one
after the other (fig.1251 A-d). The outer envelops develope first and is followed
by the second and the nucellus in the basal region, but is free in the upper region
and grows into a long micropylar tube or the style differentiate into a nutrional
tissue and group of radially elongated cells that block the micropylar tube after
the act of pollination. The mass of cells surrounded bby the three envelopes
develops into the nucellus.
