Plan a two-minute opening to a film about a genre on your choice, come up with all conventions to
help build your film.
Planning:

1. Details:

The genre I have chosen to make a two-minute opening sequence and titles to is crime, from my
point of view the definition of a crime film is a film that is mainly based around an illegal action that
has taken place, within this genre film try to portray what is morally right and send a positive
message out to their audience that committing a crime is against the law. I have chosen this genre as
it has given me the opportunity to use different techniques consisting of different camera shots,
voice overs and include a variety of different theories which will construct a good film. For example,
from my research I gathered that a long shot will be sued when someone doesnt want to be seen
and they use a long shot as they are hard to see, and Todorovs narrative theory is used as when
looking at different crime films I discover how the film started off with an equilibrium stage.

After doing my research I have concluded that the conventions of a crime film are mystery and
corruption where Ronald Barthes theory takes placed by not giving all the information away at once
as it grabs the audiences attention and keeps them watching. Another convention used is getting to
know some of the main characters, this allows the audience to build a relationship with them and
distinguish the different roles they play for example the good and bad characters. This links to
Vladimir Props theory as the hero is typically the audiences favourite character who is on a quest or
mission that they take on however, this character is stereotypically a man in crime films and the
villain is the one which the audience immediately despise as they are disliked by the hero, which
shows loyalty to the hero. I have also discovered through my research how the films use their sound
and camera shots as they use a long shot usually at the beginning of an important scene to show the
audience where they are and that they can hopefully remember the location for reference later in
the film. Close-up shots will be used when we need the audience to focus on an important piece of
small movement or expression. Sound is used to make the scene flow more for instance when no or
limited dialogue is being used then it can set the tone of the scene.

My film will be a crime film which will air in early autumn in 2018 and will be called Offence as this
title gives an insight to the genre of crime as it links in with its connotations; this will allow the
audience to make this interpretation before they know what the film is about. The connotations of
offence which will inform the audience the genre and what the film consists of crime and
imprisonment. The production company of my film will be mix productions as they will provide a
large genre of films and this name will hopefully be easy to remember by the audience and they can
signify it with good quality films, the logo of this production company will have a black background
with a white wolf in a ring, this will symbolise a strong powerful production company with good
quality. The next production company of my film will be a new production company called trapped
films which will be specifically aimed at the genres of crime films which will also have good
associations with the production company will be with a good quality film. The logo of this is
someone putting their hands-on glass which is the imagery behind being trapped.

2. Pitch:

Genres that I enjoy:

One genre that I enjoy is comedy films because they are designed to make the audience laugh
through amusement in a clever naturalistic way. When I watch comedy films, they successfully
amuse me make me laugh when I am supposed to. The conventions of comedy films are having
characters that the audience like and can relate to. This makes it easier for the character to be more
open and make the audience laugh. They will use their target audience to their advantage by
researching what they find funny and using it in their film.

Another genre of film that I enjoy is action films as they give a rush of excitement to their audience. I
like the aspect of mystery and crime that happens in the action films. In the films the lead character
has a series of challenges to complete but there is always the question whether they will complete it
or not as there is usually a villain in the way that the audience do not like.

Presenting ideas to focus groups:

Although I like the genre of film comedy and action, I am basing my film around the genre of crime
as this genre interests me as it allows the audience to make predictions and take part in the film
which I believe engages the audience more into the film. From my research, I watched now you see
me which is about magic and tricks, the film allows the characters of the film and the audience to
make predictions of how the trick was done however, the film always manages to trick the
characters and the audience. I thought that this was a fun genre to do as it has a high element of
mystery involved.

My film is about a teenage girl who is seventeen years old and she leads a normal life taking her A-
levels in a couple of months and has he mother as a teacher however, her father passed away when
she was just eleven but, they have a housekeep who the family is close with to help around the
house. In the beginning of the film the girl is walking home from her late-night class at school while it
was partially dark and she knew that her mother and housekeeper were out which left her at home
alone for the first time in a long time. When she is walking home she feels like she is being watched
by someone and wants to get home as quickly as she can, she is continuously turning around as she
knew something was wrong. After she is relieved that she got inside safe little does she know that
she left her keys on the other side of the door when a mystery character comes up at snatches them
out of the keyhole. When the character is inside she feels suspicious that something is going on as
strange things keep happening in her house, she calls her mother asking her to come home but, her
mother just tells her to stop being so paranoid and to just go to bed. Later the character will get
constant phone calls from an unknown number that she chooses to ignore.

Towards the equilibrium part of the film the characters begin to know who the thief who stole her
mislaid keys was, her father who she was aware that he has been dead for six years is the one who
took her keys and she finds out that instead of being dead her had to leave on the run which now

leave the confused teenage to make the decision all by herself if she will keep her secret from her
heartbroken mother about her fathers reappearance.

This narrative will work as it fits in with the genre well as it consists of a crime taking place as her
father was on the run which is a convention of mystery as the audience do not know why is included
as the characters neither the audience know who took the keys or the characters know until the
equilibrium part of the film. This will appeal to my target audience as the characters are around
similar age to my primary target audience to they can relate and connect to the storyline as the
seventeen-year-old is taking her A-levels at the end of the school year in May.

The crime openings that films that influenced the idea of my crime films are what doesnt kill you
as in this film a where something key happened in the opening in the film the found a body which
will later have reference to the film but in my film the keys will be stolen which will have reference
later in the film. I got the element of mystery from the film now you see me as the unknown factor
is that they dont know how the trick was done as they dont reveal the trick until the end and in my
film, they do not know the character who committed the crime was.

The secondary target audience for my film are older people around the ages of 30-40 as they might
not like the violent aspect however, they may enjoy the mystery aspects as stereotypically older
people like programs like murder mysteries and murder she wrote. Whereas my primary target
audience is younger people around the age of 16-25 as they are a similar age to some of the
characters in my film so they could relate to the film and know what the character is going through
for example her exams and how important they are which will highlight to the factor the secret that
she is keeping can affect her more that the character even knows herself.

Location planning:

In my film, I want the audience to be able to tell that it is a crime film from when it begins however, I
have different locations but I do not know which one will be clear to the audience. So, when
presenting my pitch, we worked together and found out what they liked and didnt like of each
location and summarised it in a table.

Evidence of testing:

When presenting my idea of my film to my focus group I took the feedback on an anonymous
survey, I asked questions based on my plot, characters, and narrative. I created my survey on both
my target audience and other people who my film may not appeal to.

(I collected random samples of some participants comments; I assembled them in the table below).

Target audience profile:

My primary target audience is the audience that I am aiming my film and believe that they will enjoy
it. I have primarily aimed my film at aspirer males ages 20-30, this is because when doing testing
evidence, I concluded that men were the people who enjoyed the plot and characters of my film. I
have gathered that my film may contain violence so stereotypically this will appeal to the male role
as the fight will be between male with may be relatable and entertaining for them to watch.

My secondary target audience is the people that I want to see my film but might not necessarily be
interested in watching it however; I will still segment them as the audience to my film. My secondary
audience is females ages between 30-40, this is because when doing my research, I found that
younger females werent interested in the film and found it hard to follow however, I found that
older women tend to like crime programs like murder mysteries and my film has a large aspect of
crime in it. My film is aimed a quite a broad market as it is not aimed at a specific ethnicity or class of
people as it does not contain direct humour or alienate anyone and it is a broad genre of film but,
people will watch it for mainly diversion (entertainment) purposes.

3. Plot

During the opening of my film I will have the first production company fade in and then it will have a
gap and then fade to the next production company and it will then have a few seconds gap then the
title will appear in big white letters across the screen. During the equilibrium stage of my film the
protagonist (leading) character will be introduced as busy a level student who is highly intelligent

and goes to many afterschool classes to keep up to date with her work. In the beginning the girl is
seen walking home from school listening to music however, she feels like she is being watched, little
does she know that she is. As she is anxious to get home safely she cannot get her keys in the door
quick enough and as she is so focussed on getting inside she leaves her keys in the outside of the
door. As she checks behind her she is still oblivious to where her keys are and only the audience
knows that they have been stolen but they do not know who.

In the disruption stage of the film the character finds out that her father who passes away when she
was younger was the person who took the keys however, he couldnt tell his family that he was
home as they thought that he was dead and he would know how to explain it. Later in the film the
teenage daughter finds out about her fathers appearance when she begins to feel like she is being
followed again later when she goes to the shop and she finally catches him when she sees him
leaving he house. The teenage girl will then have the choice whether to tell her mother or to keep
her fathers presents a secret. In the realisation stage of the plot the female character will tell the
mother about her fathers return and then he will explain that her had to leave and the mother will
be hesitant and annoyed with the father at first them will come to her senses and realise how much
she missed him over the six years. However, the reason that he left still is an issue so and they work
as a family to prove his innocence against the police so they can have their family back which
continues in the restored order stage.

In the second equilibrium stage the problem is resolved and the family have gone back to what they
used to be like six years ago, and towards the end of the film the characters and the audience realise
that the housekeeper was someone who the father hired to protect the family whilst he was gone
and then the housekeeper is no longer needed now the family was back together and the daughter
takes her a level exams and passes all of them which is good under the circumstances.

4. Casting

When choosing the cast to be in my film I had to consider if people were available to gather to film
the opening of my film. The result of this was that I took part in my film opening as the part of the
teenage girl in the scene however, I had to get people to help me film the various shots. If the same
person was not available to film it did not matter as they would not be seen from behind the
camera. When asking people to film it for me I ensured that they were steady and gave them the
shooting schedule so that knew what they were doing always and how the shot should look.

In the opening of my film I need between 1-2 characters a s it will keep it simple and it is not too
much to make the audience take in at once. This will keep it easy to film as it wont be that hard to
get everyone there at the same time. The characters will be the female teenager and the character
from the bushes which is the teenagers abusive father.

5. Characters

Character one: The first character that will be introduced to the audience as the protagonist
character in my film is Eva Albright a seventeen-year-old a level student from Kent who will have a
connection with the audience as they are similar ages ranges so they will
relate with exams and the stress that comes along with it. This factor make
it easier for this main character to build a connection with the audience
rather than other as they have something in common with the primary
target audience. Eva will have a good first impression as when the audience
see her for the first time she will be frightened when she is going home as
she is being followed which the audience will sympathise for her. Eva lives
at home in Kent which her mother and her younger brother Adam however, her father is no longer
with them as he passed away when she was only eleven which had a huge effect on her life and she
now has a housekeeper to help around the house who has built a strong relationship with the
mother and her two kids. This character is just over five-foot tall and is usually wearing smart outfit
as she spends a lot of time at school or in the library working late. However, when this character
isnt working she usually wears jeans and an oversized t-shirt to make her feel comfortable. This
character is viewed to be a middle-class girl who, allows the audience to connect with her on their
level and not to be too intimidating as he has an approachable essence. When this character grows
up she aspires to be an author and dreams to one day write her own book. However, now she works
at the local supermarket at the till on weekends at a low paid wage. Eva wants to travel the world
just like her father did before she was born and he told her all his stories and said that he would take
her one day. She used to have to see the school councillor due to her father s disappearance to
make sure she was ok but she passed and no longer need to talk to someone about it as she has now
come to terms with her fathers death.

Character two: The next characters that will audience will meet is the main characters mother Judie
Albright. This character will have introduced to the audience at the begging of the film after the
credits when joined with the pervious character Eva. This will ensure that the audience also start to
build a close connection with these characters. The mother is just over five-foot-five with short
brown hair who is usually seen is smart clothes as she is a school teacher with her attire as smart
blouses and skirts. As her husband used to be a bank manager before he passed away which was
hard on her as she had to leave work for three months, but then returned to support her two
children. Judie, is considered as a middle-class woman who has an average paid job as she is the
head of the history department however, she doesnt want to continue begin a teacher forever as
she wants to start her own business by running her own vegetarian restaurant in her town. She still
doesnt have rid of her husbands belongings after six years of his disappearance as she is still
hanging on to him and doesnt want to let go and get closure as she doesnt want to move on and
refuses to continue dating as she doesnt want to disrespect her husband which her family supports
her with. Judie likes to keep herself busy especially around Christmas time as she does not want to
feel lonely as her kids are getting older and they are beginning to go out more.

Character three: The final character that the audience are going to meet is a man called Martin, who
is Evas dead (so we thought) father who is 43 years old and the audience will have different
opinions of this character as they will be annoyed as the character walked out on his family however
as they start to build a relationship with the character they will begin to like him and want him to be
accepted by the family again. This character was accused to be committing this crime that he didnt
do and he was afraid that if the people found out who is family was that they were going to hurt
them which is the last thing that he wanted to happen. When Martin left, he got one of the females
who worked for him to look after his family while he was gone but he didnt know how long for. As
the housekeeper did such a good job at looking after the family he hadnt come back but he came to
a problem as the people who were after him saw him is and knew that he was not dead so he had to
go back to his house where his family are when he thought they were all out to collect some of his
belongings that were important for him to protect his family out of the house and from the
housekeeper he knew that his wife still kept them. When reunited with his daughter he knew that
he could no leave them again as it was too hard and he didnt realise how much he missed her which
out the character in an awkward position so he decided to take the risk to be reunited with his
family however, he asked his daughter to his presence a secret until he had sorted things out as he
didnt want people to know that he had a family, and the daughter was so happy to see him she
didnt mind what the reason was why he left.

Planning costumes and props:

In the opening of my film it starts off with the female girl walking home from a late-night class, she
will be wearing a blouse with a skirt and heels. She will be wearing this as she would have worn that
to school and she will be wearing a coat as it will be cold as it will be the end of winter beginning of
spring time and it will be late so it would have gotten cold. This could be considered a boring outfit
choice but Eva wants to keep it simple and not get noticed too much so she tries to blend in with
everyone else. The affect that this will have on the audience is that the younger audience can relate
to what they are like with going to school and studying, this will allow the audience to begin to build
a relationship with the female character through what she is wearing.

Later, in the opening this female character will be wearing her casual attire to show that she is
comfortable in her own home. The comfortable attire that she will be wearing will be a big top or
an oversized jumper with leggings or joggers. The character will already have his costume so no
additional purchased needed to be made. This will make the audience feel relieved that the
character is at home safe place for the character (that the audience are starting to like) to be and
they know that she will not get harmed.

One of the props that will be used in this scene will be apple
headphones. The character will be wearing headphones and
listening to music on her way home. This will allow the
characters to relate as stereotypically they listen to music a lot
which is what I gathered from my research when I watched

help build your film.
nerve as the teenager was in her room listening to pop music. This will be contrasting to the scene as
it would not be the sound that you would expect to hear in this
scene as the music is upbeat

The next prop that will be included in the opening will be the
characters house keys as it is a key part to the story as it small item
sets up the whole crime film as that is what it is based around as she
will leave them in the door for someone to take later. I have chosen
this prop as it is simplistic however has a lot of meaning to anyone,
which relates to the audience as they know how important their keys are.

Planning location:

The location of the opening scene will be on a street with the character walking around with cars
going past in the background and it will be at night time so the
street will not be too busy with a lot of cars however, it will have a
few. The effects of this will be mystery as the character doesnt
know where they are. As it will be dark in this location it will be
considered spooky and will make the audience feel like she is
being watched or that something bas is going to happen.

The next part of the opening scene will take place in a bush where the camera will be placed to show
that someone it watching the character form. The bush will be
close to the house so that a clear shot can be taken of the teenage
character, the effect of this location will be the same effect that it
has on the character as she feels paranoid that she is being
followed and the audience will share this emotion that someone is
following the character home.

The next part of the opening will take place inside of the characters
house as this will be the place where she feels safe as she felt
unsafe when walking home alone, this will make the audience feel
relieved that she got home ok and nothing happened as the
audience would have gotten a close relationship with the character.
In this location of her house she will be home alone and all the
lights will be on to show that it is night-time so that the camera will
be able to see the character.

Planning sound:

At the beginning of the opening of my film it will be the teenage character walking home from a late
class and she is on a street walking home so the sound motif will be of the cars in the background as
that is was is associated with the place. As the teenager has her headphone in so the sound that the

audience will hear will be the same as the character which will make it diegetic sound as the
audience will have the same perspective at this point so they will hear the same song that she is
listening to. The song that the character is listening to will be a pop song as from my research in the
film nerve the female character of a similar age was listening to a pop song so I will use a similar
song in my opening. The shot will cross cut to the person in the bushes perspective so they will hear
a tiny bit of her music through her headphone which I will use volume control to get this point clear
to the audience but the strongest sound will be of the bush moving and twigs breaking which will be
an asynchronous sound as it will be out of sync to the sound of the music to make sure the audience
know the difference an take more notice of the sound coming from the bush. The sound use here is
considered ambient as it is the sound that you would expect to hear in this situation. The next sound
that will be heard in this scene will be the jingle of the keys in the door to show that she is struggling
and wants to get in quickly.

7. Photo shoot: [Experiments with 6 different shot types and their effects]

Close-up shot:

This shot will be used when looking at the character putting the keys into the door; the character
struggles and tries to get inside in a hurry and then isnt concentrating as she then leaves her keys in
the door. I have used a close up shot for this as it will ensure that the audience will notice this as it is
key information that has relevance later on in the film. The affect that this will have on the audience
that it will make them feel more involved in the scene and feel connected to the character as they
do not want her to get hurt. My aim is to build the character and audience relationship this early on
in the film.

Medium shot:

This shot will be used when the character is walking with her headphones in towards the camera as
it is moving backwards. The camera will be pointing at her face however, she will not being making
direct eye contact with the audience. I have used a medium shot as it will clearly show the
characters facial expressions as she will be scared and paranoid which will lead her to constantly be
turning around. The affect that this will have on the audience will be that they will know how the
character is feeling as hopefully they can relate to being in the dark and wanting to get inside quickly
which will continue on building the audience and character relationships. This shot will make the
audience feel sympathy for the character as she will be constantly turning around behind her, the
audience will be more concerned as they can she someone watching her but she cannot see them.

Long shot:

This shot will be used when the character is being watched from the bushes and the camera will be
moving around in the bush to show that someone is there. I have used this shot because it will
highlight the fact that the character is being paranoid for a reason. This shot will capture off of the
characters body language so that the audience will see the character keep turning around. The affect
that this will have on the audience is that it will help them understand the character more and try to
guess who it is before they even know anything about the story yet as from my research of now you
see me, I discovered that the film makes people guess what happened before they know anything
about the scene.

Low angle:

This shot was used when the character was in the bushes as they had to get down so that they
werent seen. I used this shot as it make the character look like she had more power than the person
hiding in the bushes as they didnt come out until she was gone which hints that they do not want
to be seen by her at this point of the opening. The emotional impact that this shot is having on the
audience is that it will be relief as from the low angle they can see the fear in her face when she
turns around so she character did not want to see the character in the bush as they could have
harmed her.

Medium angle:

This was used when the character was walking forwards with her headphones in as it is a shot which
will be taken from an eye level point of view. I have used this shot because it will be from a point of
view if someone is standing up watching the person walking forward as it is like they are looking at
you. This links to how the audience feel as they feel like they are there and looking at the character
walking towards them, which will make the character to feel like they are getting to know the
character like how she moves so when they see the same character later they will make the link.

High angle:

I have used a high angle in the shot when the character is walking inside and past the stairs. This
shot is used to shot the character from a long distance and what she is doing for example, taking her
coat off. The effect of this shot is that it will make the viewer feel empowered as they are higher up,
the audience would like to feel in control of the situation as it will begin to make them feel
comfortable.

Hand held camera:

I have used a hand-held camera for the shot where someone is in the bushes watching the girl. In
this shot is will be of the camera keep moving and hiding so that the character does not see them.
This shot provides a jerky, bouncy, and unsteady image which creates a sense of chaos. I have used
this shot of emphasise that she is being watched as I discovered from my pitch to be more effective.
The affect that this will have on the audience is that they will get the idea that someone is there and
feel on edge like the character so they will be sharing this emotion.
