1. Race-an arbitrary classification of modern humans, sometimes, especially formerly,

based on any or a combination of various physical characteristics, as skin color, facial

form, or eye shape, and now frequently based on such genetic markers as blood groups.

2. Ethnicity- a social group that shares a common and distinctive culture, religion, language

3. Nationality- the status of belonging to a particular nation, whether by birth or

naturalization

4. Stereotype- Sociology. a simplified and standardized conception or image invested with

special meaning and held in common by members of a group

5. Social construct- a social mechanism, phenomenon, or category created and developed by

society; a perception of an individual, group, or idea that is 'constructed' through cultural

or social practice

6. Privilege- a right, immunity, or benefit enjoyed only by a person beyond the advantages

of most

7. Prejudice- any preconceived opinion or feeling, either favorable or unfavorable

8. Discrimination- treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or

against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or

thing belongs rather than on individual merit

9. Racism-a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human racial

groups determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's

own race is superior and has the right to dominate others or that a particular racial group

is inferior to the others.

10. Sexism- attitudes or behavior based on traditional stereotypes of gender roles.

11. Homophobia- unreasoning fear of or antipathy toward homosexuals

andhomosexuality.

12. Ethnocentrism- Sociology. the belief in the inherent superiority of one's own ethnic

group or culture.

13. Cultural relativism- a concept that cultural norms and values derive their meaning

within a specific social context.

14. Misogyny- hatred, dislike, or mistrust of women, or prejudice against women.

15. Cultural imperialism-The imposition of a foreign viewpoint or civilization on a

people

16. Ambivalence- Psychology. the coexistence within an individual of positive and

negative feelings toward the same person, object, or action,simultaneously drawing him

or her in opposite directions.

17. Dichotomy- division into two mutually exclusive, opposed, or contradictory groups

18. Mixed message- The misunderstanding of communication between two groups

19. Metaphor- something used, or regarded as being used, to represent something else;

emblem; symbol.

20. Social Norms- Rules or guidelines that a society has deemed acceptable behavior

21. Ideals- a person or thing conceived as embodying such a conception or conforming to

such a standard, and taken as a model for imitation

22. Kinesthetic- the sensation of movement or strain in muscles, tendons, and

joints;muscle sense.

23. Acculturation- the process of adopting the cultural traits or social patterns of another

group.
