Effective Teaching Methods

Ever since I was a kid, I can remember when teachers just stood at the front of the

classroom and talked, then gave us a worksheet. From second grade to senior year, majority of

my teachers would strictly lecture. Very few of those teachers would engage with the students

during their lessons. This seemed to influence some students grades poorly. This topic

specifically effects everyone in school, whether its elementary or college. Learning about

effective teaching philosophies and methods are very important for my future. I plan to use a

method that will allow my future students to have as much success as possible.

In my Intro to Education class at Sinclair, we learned about different teaching

philosophies that had certain teaching methods with them. The philosophies were perennialism,

essentialism, progressivism, and social reconstructionism. Each one was associated with different

methods that teachers could use. Growing up, it seems that majority of my teachers used

perennialism which is lecturing the standards students need to learn. Then there is essentialism,

which is lecturing essential knowledge and basic skills. It also includes questioning, practice,

active listening, and feedback. Next is progressivism. Progressivism is developing problem

solving, decision making, and life skills by using problem based learning, cooperative learning,

and guided discovery. Lastly, social reconstructionism is collaboration and student projects to

contribute to a just society.

Each one is similar yet very different. I believe essentialism is the most effective. I have

personally seen how it effects my learning and also other students. Lecturing, asking questions,

and giving feedback allows students to use active listening and engage in the lessons. Before

learning about the different teaching philosophies, I never really thought about how it affected

students learning. It angers me that some teachers would rather give directions on a worksheet or

just stand in the front of the classroom giving a one-sided lecture. Our education needs more

effective teachers who do everything in their power to help their students. Of course, all students

are very different which makes certain learning methods hard for students to comprehend

information. I think essentialism allows each students needs to heard when the teacher gives

feedback or asks questions.

I am interested to find out what researchers have found to be the most effective teaching

method. Also, it will be interesting to see what factors allow students to learn and comprehend

information at their full capacity. I plan to research different studies on different teaching

methods to find the best one for all students.
