Homework #5
Experiment #6

1. What precautions should be observed before CHCl3 is used anesthetic?

1.) Always use chloroform in a properly functioning chemical
fume hood. 2.) Conduct all work at least 6
inside sash. 3.) Keep sash as low as possible (even lower than the posted maximum
operating sash height). 4.) Conduct all work in a plastic tray for spill containment. 5.) Wear the right
personal protective equipment. 6.) Additional personal protective equipment may be required, depending
on the specific procedures used in your lab.
2. Why is CHCl3 kept in amber-colored bottles?
Chloform can get oxidized under amounts of UV light and oxygen into phosgene, which is a poisonous
gas and can hurt people. To prevent the formation of phosgene, they are stored in amber - colored
bottles.
3. Give important uses of iodoform, chloroform, bromoform, and carbon tetrachloride.
- Iodoform is primarily used to treat minor skin conditions due to its antiseptic properties
- Chloroform is used as a solvent for iodine, alkaloids, fats and some other substances. Also used for the
manufacturing of Freon refrigerant R-22 before.
- Bromoform is used as a fluid for mineral ore separation in geological tests, as a laboratory reagent, and
in the electronics industry in quality assurance programs.
- Carbon tetrachloride is a good solvent for waxes, lacquers, and rubbers and the main industrial use is
as a solvent.
4. Complete the following equations:
a.) CH2 - CH2 - CH2 OH + SOCl2 CH2 CH2 CH2 Cl + SO2 + HCl
b.) CH2-CH2-CH2-OH+POCl3 CH2 CH2 CH2 Cl PO3 + HCl
c.) CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-OH+HCl CH2 CH2 CH2 CH2 CH2 Cl + H2O
5. What is haloform reaction? What substance are positive to haloform reaction? Give examples of
aldehydes, ketones alcohols that produce a haloform. Give the equations and reaction mechanism
for haloform reaction.
- The Haloform reaction is a chemical reaction where a haloform (CHX3, where X is a halogen) is
produced by the exhaustive halogenation of a methyl ketone (a molecule containing the RCOCH3
group) in the presence of a base. R may be alkyl or aryl. Chlorine, bromine, or iodine in the presence
of hydroxide ions are the substances that are positive to haloform reactions. Acetone, Acetophenone,
Acetaldehyde are some aldehydes and ketone alcohols that produce haloform.
