There are many stands selling different things such as clothes, DVDs and souvenirs; however,
you can also find very interesting antique items and hand-made table cloths and crafts.
Pets are also sold at the Valletta Sunday Market but we do not advise people to encourage this
type of trade.
When: Sundays, easrly morning and closes at around 13:00 and arriving early is recommended to
avoid the crowd.
A small number of cafes are located within the Plaza and offer a break between shopping,
however, if you wish to have a coffee by the sea it is only a minute walk away.

those selling Maltese items to take home as souvenirs or local food products. Other than that, shopping in Malta gives
you one more opportunity to take a rest in one of the many cafs that are a part of the Maltese way of life.

10, 5, 2, 1 cents
Currency exchange banks have the best rates but you can also exchange money in some Maltese hotels and bureaux de change
Credit cards, debit cards and ATMs are all possible to use when shopping in Malta
Markets
Markets are the best place to enjoy the real Maltese essence. Besides great shopping, you get a cultural flavour of
Malta in these places where locals meet to socialize and buy daily products. Almost every town and village has its
market. So, you cant miss it.
In the markets of Malta you will find assorted items like household goods, clothing, music, toys, etc. For bric-a-brac,
visit Il-Monti market, just outside Vallettas city gate, on Sundays. Still in Valletta, there is a daily market in Merchant
Street where you can shop for more mainstream products. Near Cospicua, one of the Three Cities, there is a nice
weekly market on Tuesdays. Outside the capital, Marsaxlokk fish market is a must, with its strange and exotic fish. To
go there, you can even join an early morning trip organised by tour operators.
In Gozo, visit the charming it-Tokk market, held daily in the main square of Victoria. This is the perfect place to go
shopping for Maltese delicacies.
Maltese Food
People in Malta like to eat and drink. One of the reasons is that Maltese food and wine are so delicious. After you
taste the food, you will want to buy some to take home. Among others, choose sun-dried tomatoes, sun-ripened
olives, fresh figs, capers, the famed cheese and some wine.
Go shopping for food products in the local shops, as well as super, mini or street markets. You can also find
specialties in Cittadella and Victoria shops. Wines can be bought at the excellent Maltese wineries.
Crafts & Jewelry
Maltas crafts and jewelry have a tradition of worldwide reputation because of the quality of the detail achieved by
Maltese craftsmen and jewelers. Whatever you prefer, you can afford it because jewelry and crafts in Malta fit every
budget.
Check out the beautiful silver and gold filigree broches, bracelets and earrings of classic designs. The Maltese
silverware is an important part of the countrys patrimony and collectors tend to look for these items in international
auction rooms. Dating back to the days of The Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, this craft has produced
some of Europes finest ware. Today, all silver and gold products are certified for authenticity and hallmarked
accordingly by the Maltese Government Consul.
Also look for the traditionally handcrafted glass produced throughout the Malta. Only some factories are open for
visits but shops can be found easily in the main island of Malta or in Gozo. Vases and figurines are among the most
popular objects, usually swirled with lines that are inspired by the colours of the warm crystal blue waters of the
Mediterranean and the landscape of brown hills with olive groves, cactus plants and springtime wild flowers.
You can find a nice souvenir in pottery as well. The variety of practical items for the house and decorative objects is
immense.
Basket ware and wickerwork are Maltese crafts with a practical purpose too. Among numerous small items, go
shopping for Hasiras, cane blinds used on doors and windows to cut out the hot summer sun in Malta.
Fine lace is quite famous in Gozo and there has been an effort to recuperate this ancient tradition. Walking around
some cities and villages, you will probably see women sitting outside on doorsteps working the bobbin.
Hand-knitted woolen garments of colourful and classic designs make a good buy and you will always remember
they came from Malta. Specially if you have seen them displayed under the hot summer temperatures. Woven wool
rugs in cream and white are also available.
Not exactly traditional, Maltese buses have become quite popular with tourists. They came in badges, plaques and
metal and pottery miniature models.
Where to buy crafts and jewelry in Malta
In Valletta, the TaQali crafts village is the place to shop for crafts. You will surely find something for you in all the stalls and shops where you can
watch craftsmen work live. But you must also go bargain hunting in Santa Lucija Street, Republic Street or in the side alleyways.
When you decide to take the ferry to Gozo, head to the Cittadella Crafts & Shopping Center (Victoria) and the TaDbiegi Crafts Center (San
Lawrenz). But you can check many other small shops in Gozo. They arent hard to find.
These are safe places to go shopping for the real Maltese crafts and jewelry. In other places, if you have doubts about
authenticity, call the Malta Crafts Center in St. Johns Square (Valletta) or visit it to watch the local crafts displayed
and gather information on where to buy them.
Antiques
Malta also has a reputation for its excellent antiques, which is easy to understand since we know these islands were
home to many nobles from the 16th to 18th century. You can contemplate the finest pieces in the Maltese museums
and palaces open to the public. Make a visit to Palazzo Parisio, Naxxar and Casa Rocca Piccola (all in Valletta).
The most extraordinary antiques in Malta are furniture, silverware, maritime prints, art, Maltese clocks and gems. You
will find them in antique shops in almost every town. Some have finer items, while others offer interesting bric-a-brac.
But you can find the items in the open-air markets mentioned before in this page on shopping in Malta.
The most popular tourist areas, Sliema and St Julians, also have this international-style shopping at reasonable
prices. Shop for music, fashion, perfumes, shoes, sports, interiors and all sorts of articles or sit at fast-food outlets,
restaurants and cafs.
Artwork
The place to look for some Maltese art is Valletta. Find The Center for Creativity at St. James Cavalier, The Museum
of Fine Arts or the local art foundation Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti to visit the exhibitions and buy a piece.
Throughout Malta you will discover many private galleries too
A visit to Malta is not complete until you know the island of Gozo. Traveling to the second Maltese island is very easy,
you just take the inexpensive ferry to Gozo and enjoy the views.
The Gozo Channel company was formed in 1979. So, it has a lot of experience carrying passengers and vehicles in
the beautiful Mediterranean sea of Malta. All ferry boats are very modern and safe. Inside you will find a caf and a
shop where you can buy souvenirs, books, magazines and Malta guides.
Time - 30 minutes
By CAR
An excellent way to explore Gozo is to rent a car in Maltas main island and take it
with you on the ferry. This will allow you maximum flexibility to discover everything
Gozo has to offer before returning on a late ferry to the main island. Cirkewwa is in
the northwest of Malta. Keep driving in that direction following the signs to Gozo

been an avid car collector and, as he grew older, so his collection grew with him. And became the

car models and when he reached his driving age, Carol built a car to his own design equipped with a
Jaguar XK 140 engine. His passion geared him to commence a real car collection with Fiat 1200, still
present today, paving the way.
Carol decided it was time to share his collection with the world, to gather it all in one place and enjoy
it spending his days looking at the cars he loved so much. And thus was the Malta Classic Car
Museum born, lovely 3000 square meter reached through a regal marble staircase. Of course , Carol
didn't just want an open area to display the cars. He wanted something special that would show the
cars in their best possible way, while also framing these works of vehicular art in the right context.
Today compromises classics such as Alfa Romeo, Austin, Jaguar, Fiat, Ford, MG, Mini, Sunbeam,
Triumph, as well as most modern BMW's, Jaguar and Ferrari. There are also classic motorbikes such
as BSA, Vespa and Lambretta. All cars on display can be reached from all angels.
Apart from the over one hundred items on display, there is a great variety of jukeboxes, slot
machines, life size models, memorabilia and posters. Carol himself is responsible for the remarkable
photographic collection capturing a past motoring epoch. Stepping in to the Malta Classic Car
Museum takes you on an instant time travel trip back to the golden years of the 1920's and let's you
view the development of cars all the way up to modern times.

WELCOME TO FORT RINELLA! 2014 WINNER
Built in 1878 by the British, Fort Rinella was the most technologically advanced war
machine of its day. Powered by coal-fired steam driven hydraulics it could fire its
monstrous 100-ton gun every six minutes, sending a one-ton shell up to a distance
of eight miles to pierce no less than 21 inches (65cm) of ship armour!
Fort Rinella
Fort Rinella was one of four 100-ton gun batteries built in Malta and Gibraltar for the protection of
harbours. These forts became necessary with the building of two powerful Italian battlesh
the Duilio and Dandalo, both armed with four 100-ton guns each in revolving turrets. At the time, Britain u
the Mediterranean as a quick route to India and it was feared that the growing naval power of Italy migh
the balance of power in the region.

Sunday Morning Market - flea market 2
The is held outside Valletta's city walls, in front of St. James Bastion & St.
James Counter Guard at the side of the bus station. This is the largest
market in Malta and and interesting to have a look around. Some people
may find the caged birds a bit objectionable especially as the gages tend
to be small.
During the week there is a daily open air market in Market Street near
the Palace
Both outdoor markets sell the usual merchandise sold in markets world
wide, seconds, fake designer labels. If looking for a bargain amongst the
brick a brac get there early. Don't forget to polish up your bargaining skills
There are additional Sunday Morning Markets in the fishing village of
Marsaxlokk in the south west of Malta and the It-Tokk market in
Victoria in the centre of Gozo
City Gate 3
City gate is the main entrance through the city walls to the City of Valletta.
On the outside of the walls, is the town of Floriana, the Triton
fountain & Valletta's bus station
A good view of the great ditch can be seen from the bridge leading up to
the City gate, also good views can be enjoyed from the ramparts above
the City Gate
The current Gate, the fourth to be built was erected in 1964, but generally
was not liked by the Maltese public. The previous gate (Black & white
photo) built in 1853 by the British looked far more impressive and called
the Porta Reale (Kingsway)
The original gateway was completed in 1569 with a draw bridge over the
very deep dry moat now called a ditch. This was replaced by a 1632 by a Republic Street with City Gate showing at
more ornate structure the top of the street
Republic Street
St Johns Co Cathedral 7
The view from Republic Street the location of the main entrance is rather
unimposing, walk down St Johns Street for an impressive view of the twin
towers and the main high baroque frontage of the cathedral.

take photos in low light .

The 600 seater Manoel Theatre is one of the oldest theatres in Europe and
a baroque masterpiece. Built by Grand Master Manoel de Vilhena in 1731.
Besides being used as a theatre there are guided tours around the building
Our Lady Mount Carmel 13
This is the domed church that dominates Valletta skyline and many tourists
wrongly assume it is the cathedral it is so imposing from a distance. The
street around the church are very narrow and it is difficult to obtain a close
photograph. Like most Maltese churches absolutly stunning inside.
Also open are the cellars with 3 World War II air raid shelter in cut out of
solid rock.
The largest could hold 100 people but usually 30 slept in this shelter.
Siege Bell
The gardens are located behind the arch colonade top left of photograph.
The guns are located 1 level below on top of the solid ramparts.
You can watch the Noon-day Gun fired from the Gun Saluting
Battery which is located one level below the Upper Barrakka Gardens
for free at the Upper Barrakka Gardens level.
You can remain on the Gun Saluting Battery for the firing of the Noon-
day Gun thus getting a much closer view of this excellent spectacular.
Hastings Gardens 24
Hastings Gardens are located on St. John's Bastion, St. Michael's Bastion
and curtain wall between the two bastions in Valletta. The gardens
themselves are not particularly interesting but the views from the ramparts
over Marsamxett harbour, Msida Creek and inland looking over Floriana
and beyond are fabulous. It is also an interesting place to see the might of
Valletta's fortifications, the thickness of the walls protecting the cannon on
the ramparts, on this the landward side, the side from which attacking
forces would normally attack from.
The gardens contain a sarcophagus, made of marble, of Francis the
Marquis of Hastings near to the entrance to the gardens. Lord Hastings
was Governor of Malta from 1824 until his death in 1827.
