2. MALTA NATIONAL AQUARIUM

3. There are approximately 254 National & regional aquariums worldwide. In the
past 24 years the development of the Underwater World concept has rendered
traditional methods of viewing marine life obsolete. The Underwater World
utilizes a horizontally-curved acrylic tunnel which takes visitors beneath the
waters of a massive aquarium. The aquarium environment is modelled on local
marine conditions and provides a unique combination of educational and
entertainment facilities. With the publics growing awareness of conservation
issues, the education aspect of the Underwater World is of increasing
importance.

The success of the concept is illustrated by the performance of Underwater

World built in Auckland, New Zealand. Kelly Tarlton's Underwater World
became New Zealands number one tourist attraction in its first year of
operation, attracting over 750,000 visitors. The project was officially credited
by the Government with extending the average length of stay of visitors to
Auckland from 1.8 to 2.8 nights. In the United States, over twenty two cities
plan to expand aquariums or build new ones. In Asia and Australia, many major
aquariums have been completed in the past ten years, with several more under
development. An economic study determined that the National Aquarium in
Baltimore USA, has become Marylands leading tourist attraction, contributing
US$ 88 million dollars annually to the states economy and adding nearly three
thousand new jobs. The Monterey Bay Aquarium in California attracted 2.4
million visitors in 1985, its first year of operation.
4. The declining interest in traditional amusement and theme parks is illustrative
of a shift away from youth-oriented leisure and amusement parks to an
experience which is both educational and entertaining. The success and
growing popularity of aquariums in major cities around the world provides
further evidence of these trends.
5. The Malta National Aquarium on the other has been on the cards for many
years, works on site started in October 2011 and is now open to the general
public.
6. The entire project is spread over approximately 20,000 square meters
comprising of a public aquarium, a public garden at promenade level, a car
park, facilities for local dive schools, catering facilities including a reef club, a
merchandise outlet and a tourist information kiosk.
7. The public aquarium has more than 26 display tanks with, amongst others,
Mediterranean fish, commonly found in Maltese waters together with replicas of
historical artefacts that one can find in the seas around us. The main tank of
the aquarium houses species from the Indian Ocean, including two shark
species. The main tank is approximately 12 meters in diameter. Visitors are
able to go through a water tunnel thereby experiencing the fish at a much
closer range. All tanks have been expertly themed to replicate the underwater
environment. Additional features of the public aquarium include a class room
facility, interpretation, touch pools, a temporary exhibition space, veterinary
and quarantine facilities.
8. The national aquarium is housed in an underground building located under the
promenade level. However, its entrance facilities is housed in an iconic curved
shell structure in the form of a starfish. The promenade of Qawra along the
project has been extended and incorporated in the entire project. Apart from
new walkways and seating areas, there is a childrens play area and a
landscaped garden which is accessible to the general public at no charge.

A Retail Shop forms part of the aquarium experience and is positioned close to
the exit from the aquarium which allows people to purchase different
souvenirs that are branded specifically for the aquarium. A Food & Beverage
Outlet is also housed inside the aquarium grounds including a Reef Club Grill,
Pizzeria/Trattoria, Coffee shop and Promenade Kiosk including the Cafe Del
Mar Beach Club. There is also be a non-profit diving institute which serves as a
learning centre for the general public and as a facility for the diving
community. This will undoubtedly help build more awareness on the
Mediterranean underwater sea life environment and that of the Maltese islands.

The Aquarium visitors attraction in Qawra is an EU Co-funded project.

building. The wooden materials were imported from Holland and Canada, since Malta doesnt have any forests. To put

Markets
Markets are the best place to enjoy the real Maltese essence. Besides great shopping, you get a cultural flavour of
Malta in these places where locals meet to socialize and buy daily products. Almost every town and village has its
market. So, you cant miss it.

In the markets of Malta you will find assorted items like household goods, clothing, music, toys, etc. For bric-a-brac,
visit Il-Monti market, just outside Vallettas city gate, on Sundays. Still in Valletta, there is a daily market in Merchant
Street where you can shop for more mainstream products. Near Cospicua, one of the Three Cities, there is a nice
weekly market on Tuesdays. Outside the capital, Marsaxlokk fish market is a must, with its strange and exotic fish. To
go there, you can even join an early morning trip organised by tour operators.

In Gozo, visit the charming it-Tokk market, held daily in the main square of Victoria. This is the perfect place to go
shopping for Maltese delicacies.

Maltese Food
People in Malta like to eat and drink. One of the reasons is that Maltese food and wine are so delicious. After you
taste the food, you will want to buy some to take home. Among others, choose sun-dried tomatoes, sun-ripened
olives, fresh figs, capers, the famed cheese and some wine.

Go shopping for food products in the local shops, as well as super, mini or street markets. You can also find
specialties in Cittadella and Victoria shops. Wines can be bought at the excellent Maltese wineries.
Crafts & Jewelry
Maltas crafts and jewelry have a tradition of worldwide reputation because of the quality of the detail achieved by
Maltese craftsmen and jewelers. Whatever you prefer, you can afford it because jewelry and crafts in Malta fit every
budget.

Check out the beautiful silver and gold filigree broches, bracelets and earrings of classic designs. The Maltese
silverware is an important part of the countrys patrimony and collectors tend to look for these items in international
auction rooms. Dating back to the days of The Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, this craft has produced
some of Europes finest ware. Today, all silver and gold products are certified for authenticity and hallmarked
accordingly by the Maltese Government Consul.
Also look for the traditionally handcrafted glass produced throughout the Malta. Only some factories are open for
visits but shops can be found easily in the main island of Malta or in Gozo. Vases and figurines are among the most
popular objects, usually swirled with lines that are inspired by the colours of the warm crystal blue waters of the
Mediterranean and the landscape of brown hills with olive groves, cactus plants and springtime wild flowers.

You can find a nice souvenir in pottery as well. The variety of practical items for the house and decorative objects is
immense.

Basket ware and wickerwork are Maltese crafts with a practical purpose too. Among numerous small items, go
shopping for Hasiras, cane blinds used on doors and windows to cut out the hot summer sun in Malta.

Fine lace is quite famous in Gozo and there has been an effort to recuperate this ancient tradition. Walking around
some cities and villages, you will probably see women sitting outside on doorsteps working the bobbin.

Hand-knitted woolen garments of colourful and classic designs make a good buy and you will always remember
they came from Malta. Specially if you have seen them displayed under the hot summer temperatures. Woven wool
rugs in cream and white are also available.

Not exactly traditional, Maltese buses have become quite popular with tourists. They came in badges, plaques and
metal and pottery miniature models.
Where to buy crafts and jewelry in Malta

In Valletta, the TaQali crafts village is the place to shop for crafts. You will surely find something for you in all the stalls and shops where you can

watch craftsmen work live. But you must also go bargain hunting in Santa Lucija Street, Republic Street or in the side alleyways.

When you decide to take the ferry to Gozo, head to the Cittadella Crafts & Shopping Center (Victoria) and the TaDbiegi Crafts Center (San

Lawrenz). But you can check many other small shops in Gozo. They arent hard to find.

These are safe places to go shopping for the real Maltese crafts and jewelry. In other places, if you have doubts about
authenticity, call the Malta Crafts Center in St. Johns Square (Valletta) or visit it to watch the local crafts displayed
and gather information on where to buy them.

Antiques
Malta also has a reputation for its excellent antiques, which is easy to understand since we know these islands were
home to many nobles from the 16th to 18th century. You can contemplate the finest pieces in the Maltese museums
and palaces open to the public. Make a visit to Palazzo Parisio, Naxxar and Casa Rocca Piccola (all in Valletta).

The most extraordinary antiques in Malta are furniture, silverware, maritime prints, art, Maltese clocks and gems. You
will find them in antique shops in almost every town. Some have finer items, while others offer interesting bric-a-brac.
But you can find the items in the open-air markets mentioned before in this page on shopping in Malta.

Fashion and music

Being the capital of Malta, Valletta has many shopping malls and arcades, specially along Republic Street. This is
where you can shop for designer brands, fashion, music and the like.

The most popular tourist areas, Sliema and St Julians, also have this international-style shopping at reasonable
prices. Shop for music, fashion, perfumes, shoes, sports, interiors and all sorts of articles or sit at fast-food outlets,
restaurants and cafs.

Artwork
The place to look for some Maltese art is Valletta. Find The Center for Creativity at St. James Cavalier, The Museum
of Fine Arts or the local art foundation Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti to visit the exhibitions and buy a piece.
Throughout Malta you will discover many private galleries too

ferry boat bus terminal, you have to go straight and right and enter the little ticket office just where you will buy a ticket

Inside the ticket office

you can buy either a round-trip or one-way ticket to Gozo. We advise you to buy the round-trip ferry boat ticket that
costs 4.65 euros. After you purchased your ferry ticket you have to follow the arrows to go to the ferry boat waiting
terminal.
This is the place where
you will wait for the next Gozo ferry boat. Everyone profits to take some sun, read some Malta guide book, eat

as the ferry-boat also transports vehicles around the archipelago.

You will enter the boat
on the same gate as vehicles do. Pay attention to the port employees as they will instruct you. This kind of trip is fun

Gozo is fantastic and the Mediterranean sea views are gorgeous. You can enjoy a nice boat ride between Malta and
Gozo, have great fun and enjoy a fabulous travel experience.

Arriving in Gozo is
great and the views of Mgarr harbor are just amazing. You will go down the stairs and wait for the boat staff to instruct
you until you can go out of the boat. Enjoy Gozo Island

The Malta Classic Car Museum situated in Qawra is considered to be amongst the best Classic Car
museums in Europe and worldwide. The owner of the Classic Car Museum is Carol Galea has always
been an avid car collector and, as he grew older, so his collection grew with him. And became the
largest collection of classic cars on the island. During his childhood he built a significant collection of
car models and when he reached his driving age, Carol built a car to his own design equipped with a
Jaguar XK 140 engine. His passion geared him to commence a real car collection with Fiat 1200, still
present today, paving the way.

Carol decided it was time to share his collection with the world, to gather it all in one place and enjoy
it spending his days looking at the cars he loved so much. And thus was the Malta Classic Car
Museum born, lovely 3000 square meter reached through a regal marble staircase. Of course , Carol
didn't just want an open area to display the cars. He wanted something special that would show the
cars in their best possible way, while also framing these works of vehicular art in the right context.
Today compromises classics such as Alfa Romeo, Austin, Jaguar, Fiat, Ford, MG, Mini, Sunbeam,
Triumph, as well as most modern BMW's, Jaguar and Ferrari. There are also classic motorbikes such
as BSA, Vespa and Lambretta. All cars on display can be reached from all angels.

Apart from the over one hundred items on display, there is a great variety of jukeboxes, slot
machines, life size models, memorabilia and posters. Carol himself is responsible for the remarkable
photographic collection capturing a past motoring epoch. Stepping in to the Malta Classic Car
Museum takes you on an instant time travel trip back to the golden years of the 1920's and let's you
view the development of cars all the way up to modern times.

WELCOME TO FORT RINELLA! 2014 WINNER
Built in 1878 by the British, Fort Rinella was the most technologically advanced war
machine of its day. Powered by coal-fired steam driven hydraulics it could fire its
monstrous 100-ton gun every six minutes, sending a one-ton shell up to a distance
of eight miles to pierce no less than 21 inches (65cm) of ship armour!

Fort Rinella

Fort Rinella was one of four 100-ton gun batteries built in Malta and Gibraltar for the protection of
harbours. These forts became necessary with the building of two powerful Italian battlesh
the Duilio and Dandalo, both armed with four 100-ton guns each in revolving turrets. At the time, Britain u
the Mediterranean as a quick route to India and it was feared that the growing naval power of Italy migh
the balance of power in the region.

The 100-ton gun was first developed for Italy

by the great British Victorian inventor and
industrialist from Newcastle, Sir William
George Armstrong. The 100-ton gun was the
worlds largest muzzle-loading cannon ever to
be built. It has a calibre of 17.72-inches
(45cm) and it is 35 feet (11m) long. It fired
explosive elongated shot using a quarter of a
ton of black powder. The cost of each round
equaled the daily salary of 2,700 soldiers!

Fort Rinella is managed by Fondazzjoni Wirt

The current Gate, the fourth to be built was erected in 1964, but generally
was not liked by the Maltese public. The previous gate (Black & white
photo) built in 1853 by the British looked far more impressive and called
the Porta Reale (Kingsway)

The original gateway was completed in 1569 with a draw bridge over the
very deep dry moat now called a ditch. This was replaced by a 1632 by a Republic Street with City Gate showing at
more ornate structure the top of the street

Fort St Elmo - War Museum 14

The War Museum is located within the fortifications of Fort St Elmo.
Through the entrance near to Marsamxett harbour, i.e. slightly to your left
when you reach the bottom of Republic Street. The War
Museum concentrates on thesecond world war.
The star exhibit is probably the 'Faith' Gloster Gladiator bi plane, which
with it's sister planes 'Hope' and 'Charity'played such a big part in the air
defence of Malta. Although Malta only had the 3 bi-planes they were kept
airborne almost constantly for 17 days and they fooled the Italian air force
into thinking that the RAF had a far larger fighter force. Unfortunately the
wings have been removed probably to fit the plane into the museum.
Malta had 3,000 air raids in 2 years at the height of it's starvation siege, Fort St Elmo
and was the most bombed area during the war

Valletta's fortifications, the thickness of the walls protecting the cannon on
the ramparts, on this the landward side, the side from which attacking
forces would normally attack from.
The gardens contain a sarcophagus, made of marble, of Francis the

100.

101. Constructed on a grid pattern in 1551 by order of Grandmaster De La Sengle, the

Gardjola Gardens in Senglea offer a panoramic view that includes the docks in Marsa, Valletta,
the entrance to the Grand Harbour and Fort St. Angelo.

102. The sentry box placed on the tip of the bastion, il-gardjola, epitomises the role of the
fortifications around the harbour. On the sentry box there are sculptured various symbols of
watchfulness, namely the eye, the ear, and the crane bird. The inscription in Latin assures the
inhabitants of the harbour area to rest at ease, as the tower stands guard against any hostile force
that may attempt to approach Maltese shores.
