ECBA Certificate Program Overview

The Entry Certificate in Business Analysis (ECBA) provides individuals with a


certificate that recognizes individuals entering the field of business analysis.

This certificate is beneficial to:

Individuals entering the BA profession, including:

o Students enrolled in BA academic programs.

o New graduates.

Professionals in career transition.

Functional managers who are not BAs, but manage them.

This certification program is aligned with the International Standards Organization


(ISO) 17024 standard for certifying the competence of personnel.

The certificate examination is currently only offered in English. Other languages may
be included in the future.

You do not need to be an IIBA member in order to take the certification examination,
but IIBA members receive discounts on certification exam fees.

Benefits of the ECBA Certificate

Obtaining the ECBA includes demonstrating the required knowledge and competencies of
a new practitioner of business analysis according to requirements designated by IIBA.

Benefits to the individual may include:

Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the principles and industry best practices.

CCBA Certification Program Overview

The Certification of Competency in Business Analysis (CCBA) designation is a


professional certification for business analysis practitioners who want to be
recognized for their expertise and skills by earning formal recognition. With a
minimum of 3750 hours of hands-on business analysis experience, they have
developed essential BA skills.

CCBA recipients are recognized for the investment they have already made in their
business analysis careers. Certification is beneficial to:

Individuals with an ECBA designation with the required work experience


hours.

Individuals in the Business Analysis (BA) profession without a current IIBA


certification or certificate but meet the CCBA eligibility requirements.

Product owners/managers.

Non-BA consultants.

Trainers.

Hybrid Business Analysis professionals (those with other business titles but
who also perform business analysis), including but not limited to:

Project Managers (PMs),

Testers,

Quality Assurance (QA) personnel,

Change Managers, and

Designers.

This also includes professionals working in the role of:

Business analysis.

Systems analysis.

Requirements analysis or management.

Process management.

Consulting.

This certification program is aligned with the International Standards Organization

CBAP Certification Program Overview

The Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP) designation is a


professional certification for individuals with extensive business analysis (BA)
experience. With a minimum of 7500 hours of hands-on BA experience,
CBAP recipients are the elite, senior members of the BA community.

With thousands of individuals all over the world achieving the CBAP designation
since the first Certified Business Analysis exam was held in November 2006,
CBAP recipients are experts in identifying the business needs of an organization in
order to determine the best solutions. More and more companies are recognizing the
CBAP designation and the value and expertise these professionals bring to their
organizations.

Eligibility Requirements

ECBA requirements

Minimum 40 hours of Professional Development Training in the past four


years.

Agree to the ECBA Code of Conduct.

CCBA requirements

Minimum 3750 hours of BA work experience aligned with the BABOK


Guide in the past seven years, including:

o a minimum 900 hours in each of two of the six knowledge areas or


minimum 500 hours in each of four of the six knowledge areas.

Minimum 40 hours of Professional Development Training in the past four


years.

Two references from a career manager, client, or CBAP recipient.

Agree to the CCBA Code of Conduct.

CBAP requirements

Minimum 7500 hours of BA work experience aligned with the BABOK Guide
in the past ten years, including:

o a minimum 900 hours in each of four of the six knowledge areas.

Minimum 40 hours of Professional Development Training in the past four


years.

Two references from a career manager, client, or CBAP recipient.

Agree to the CBAP Code of Conduct.

Work Experience Requirement

Work experience means being engaged in business analysis tasks specifically


aligned with the knowledge areas, perspectives, and underlying competencies as
defined in the BABOK Guide.

Work experience can either be activities the applicant has applied directly OR
activities the applicant has assisted others in applying.

You must have the minimum number of hours in the time frame listed for the
certificate or certification level.

NOTE: Do not list work outside of the listed time period (for example, older than 7
years for CCBA). If you do so, you will not be able to submit your application.

The Work Experience section must be filled out as follows:

List work entries in date order with the most recent work experience first.

Similar work can be grouped together as one work entry.

Resumes will not be accepted to complete this requirement.

For each work entry, indicate the hours you spent in each of the 6 Knowledge
Areas (KAs).

The hours from each KA will be summed to determine your total business analysis
hours per work entry.

Professional Development Requirement

You must have the minimum number of hours of professional development in the
time frame listed for the certificate or certification level.

NOTE:

Professional development outside of the time period will not be considered.

1 hour of classroom/contact time = 1 hour of Professional Development.

Professional Development hours may be reported in quarter () hour
increments after one full hour. If the fractions of Professional Development
add up to less than an hour, they do not qualify for any credit.

ECBA requirements
Professional development for ECBA must be either one or a combination of the following:

Classroom and online courses (e.g. EEP endorsed courses)

Webinars - live or recorded (e.g. IIBA webinars)

Conference track sessions, tutorials, keynotes & workshops

Chapter events (i.e. presentations, study groups, workshops, conference days)

Self -directed learning (i.e. reading/reviewing the BABOK Guide v3)

NOTE: The content of these professional development activities must be aligned with
the BABOK Guide v3.

Documenting your Professional Development for ECBA


Refer to the following examples to help guide you on how to fill out the professional
development section of the online application:

EEP Classroom and online courses

Non-EEP Classroom and online courses, and Webinars (live or recorded)

Conference track sessions, tutorials, keynotes & workshops

Chapter events (i.e. presentations, study groups, workshops, conference days)

Self -directed learning (i.e. reading/reviewing the BABOK Guide v3)

CCBA and CBAP requirements


Professional development for CCBA and CBAP must:

directly relate to business analysis, underlying competencies, or perspectives as
defined in the BABOK Guide,

be a session or course with a moderator, facilitator, or instructor who leads an


individual or group through the material,

have a measurable objective(s) that apply directly to business analysis (for example,
changing behaviour or improving skills),

include opportunities for students to interact and ask questions,

include opportunities for students to practice the task or objective being presented,
and

include an assessment that identifies areas of improvement to the student.

NOTE: IIBA endorsed courses as per the Endorsed Education Provider (EEP)
program meet the above criteria.

Knowledge Area Requirement

There are six Knowledge Areas defined within the BABOK Guide.

You must have a minimum number of hours of experience in each Knowledge Area
(KA), as follows:

NOTE: For CCBA, an alternative minimum is 500 hours of experience in four KAs.

These minimum hours are included in the minimum hours required for the work
experience requirement.

Professional Reference Requirement

To complete the application, you must have two references from a career manager,
client (internal or external), or CBAP recipient.

These references must meet the following conditions:

At least one of the references must be a current contact.

All references must have known the applicant for at least six months.

A career manager is defined by IIBA as the person who is responsible for


providing and preparing the applicants annual performance review.

Project managers cannot be references unless they are also the applicants
career manager. The reference form must clearly indicate they fill both roles or
the reference will not qualify.

Only two references will be assessed during the application assessment
process.

It is the applicants responsibility to ensure the reference submits their form in


time to be considered for the exam date of interest and to do any necessary
follow-up with their references.
