My name is Madison Starr and I will be your childs 1st grade teacher this year. I graduated from
Grand Valley State University with an Elementary Education degree and an emphasis in mathematics.
During this time, I became very strong in learning how to create a classroom that children can feel safe
learn from me, as well as learn from each other. My classroom is set up in a way that makes
collaboration easy. Students are set up in groups so they can use each other to assist them in their
learning. Students are expected to ask for help from their peers to hear an explanation in a new way.
Students who understand the topic are expected to explain it to their peers, which will make them
My classroom is not based on grades and correct answers. Rather, it is based on learning from
our mistakes. If something is done incorrectly, I expect my students to learn from that mistake and then
fix it. When we fix our mistakes, our brains are growing. Our focus is on growth rather than grades.
The last and most important aspect of my classroom is kindness. My classroom is somewhere
where every child feels loved and every child feels safe. Students will respect each other and support
each other in their learning. There is a no tolerance policy in my classroom for students who are being
unkind and interfering with learning. If this takes place, there will be consequences.
