Unit Title: Solving Quadratic Equations: Maximizing Profits Name: Marizsa Verdin
Content Area: Mathematics Grade Level: 9-12
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
Reasoning with Equations and Inequalities A-REI
Solve equations and inequalities in one variable. [Quadratics with real coefficients]
4. Solve quadratic equations in one variable.
a. Use the method of completing the square to transform any quadratic equation in x into an equation of the
form (x p)2 = q that has the same solutions. Derive the quadratic formula from this form.
b. Solve quadratic equations by inspection (e.g., for x2 = 49), taking square roots, completing the square, the
quadratic formula, and factoring, as appropriate to the initial form of the equation. Recognize when the
quadratic formula gives complex solutions and write them as a bi for real numbers a and b.
Seeing Structure in Expressions A-SSE
Write expressions in equivalent forms to solve problems.
3. Choose and produce an equivalent form of an expressions to reveal and explain properties of the quantity
represented by the expression.
b. Complete the square in a quadratic expression to reveal the maximum or minimum value of the function it
defines.
Big Ideas:
Apply quadratic equations to real world problem.
Maximize profits and determine which items will give them the most profit in a business.
Relationship between Completing the square and the Quadratic Formula.
Explore different methods for solving quadratic equations.
Essential Questions:
1. How do we derive the quadratic formula?
2. Which methods for solving quadratic equations will always give you solutions?
3. How can solving quadratic equations be applied to the real world?
4. How can quadratic equations be used to maximize revenue for a business?
Unit Goals:
1. Students will be able solve quadratic equations using more than one or all of the methods, completing the square, factoring,
using the quadratic equation.
2. Students will gain an understanding and memorize the quadratic equation.
3. Students will be able to see how solving quadratic equations to real world problems.
4. Students will be able to solve maximizing revenue problems.
Unit Summary:
In this unit we will be exploring quadratic equations. We will explore the different methods that can be used to solve quadratic equations; these
methods will include taking the square root, factoring, completing the square, and using the quadratic formula. You will be able to identify when it
is best to use each method to make it easier to solve quadratic equations. Students will do a webercise to help them explore the topic
of deriving the quadratic formula, explore the graph of the quadratic equation, and the application of quadratic equations to real life problems. We
will also explore the different ways in which we can apply quadratic equations to the real world. Some of these include problems related to sports,
speed, and profit. You will work in groups and use these methods to solve some of these real world problems. Students will create posters to
present some of these real world problems to the class. Finally, you will apply your knowledge of solving quadratic equations to maximize the
profit for two different items from a local/neighborhood store and determine which item will give the business the most profit and present your
findings to the class.
