Brief Overview of Lesson:


Students will use decoding skills in order to understand the meaning of
words as they apply to the context of the story. Students will then find
out the definitions of these words and learn how to correctly spell and
define them.

Phonics and Word Recognition: 3. Know and apply grade-level phonics
and word analysis skills in decoding words. a. Identify and know the
meaning of the most common prefixes and derivational suffixes. b.
Decode words with common Latin suffixes. c. Decode multisyllable words.
d. Read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words.

Objectives/ Student Learning Outcomes:

Using a read aloud text, students will be able to use word analysis skills in
order to decode the meaning of words in which they are unfamiliar with.
Students will learn the spelling and meaning of new words from the read
aloud text.

Instructional Sequence:
1. The teacher will introduce the book My Name is Maria
Isabel, by asking the students if they know any Spanish
words
2. The teacher will read the book My Name is Maria Isabel
aloud to the class over the course of one week, reading
two chapters a day.
3. The teacher will stop at words that the students are likely
to be unfamiliar with, and will model word analysis skills
for the students in order to figure out the meaning of the
word. For each word the teacher stops at, the teacher
will write the word on the board.

4. At the end of the reading each day the students will use
dictionaries to look up the definition of each of the words
the teacher has listed on the board.
5. The teacher will inform students that they will be quizzed
on the new words and that they should know the words
spelling and definition.
6. At the end of the week the teacher will give a word
knowledge quiz on the words from the reading.

Plan to measure Student learning/Assessment:


A word knowledge quiz will be given (see attached).
The teacher will say each word allowed and the
students will write down the word on their quiz.
Then the students will match up each word with the
definition.
