Problem Solving Reflection

An assignment I have chosen for this category was a speech that I gave my junior year

for my Communication 101 college class. The topic I addressed in my speech was overcrowding

in classrooms. I covered and addressed the effects of teaching a smaller class in comparison to

bigger ones and gave a solution this issue. I chose this prompt due to the fact that it was

something many of my peers and I have experienced many times while going to school and

because I honestly believe it is a problem we need to address and fix.

This artifact fits category because I addressed a problem while giving reasons to why it

does not allow for self and community improvement. After addressing this problem, I made

people aware of how it is affecting many of us and the possible solutions that there are. It is

important because it is a reoccurring problem that continues to grow that we could help bring a

solution to that doesnt require an army to change. For example, many schools in my area are

unable to build new buildings due to the funding, but portable classrooms are cheap and helps

solve the initial problem, which is overcrowding. Another possible solution could be building

more schools in the community.

This assignment meets some student learning outcomes that makes me an active citizen, a

critical thinker as well as an effective communicator. This assignment reflects this because I am

actively attempting to provide a change in my community, as well as inform my peers of ways in

which their community is suffering. For example, I chose to do a topic that related to schools

around my community and I chose a topic that is relating to what school staff members and

students have to confront. This assignment made me a critical thinker because I had to find a way

that this problem could be potentially solved. Not only that but I also found a solutions and ways
to support a change in our school. While giving this speech, I was proving to be an effective

communicator because in order for my topic to be effective, I had to choose a topic that related to

my audience to effectively grasp their attention. I had to adjust my vocabulary and give a clear

understanding that I knew my topic in order to convince them that it is something that needs to

be brought into attention.

In completing this assignment I have shared an ongoing issue that most low income

students face that could be solved. While doing this assignment I learned that I could be active in

my community by finding issues, addressing them and finding a solution is possible. In the

future, this assignment can serve as a tool when I am attempting to find ways to share issues as

well as refer back to it as an example when I need to give a speech.
