College of Education
LESSON PLAN FORMAT

Name: Megan Smidt

Grade Level: Kindergarten
School: May Overby Elementary
Date: Feb. 6, 2017
Time: 2:30

Reflection from prior lesson:

This is the first history lesson I have taught. The students had
previously been working on science. We are going to be talking about our
community and where it is located in our world. This is a hard concept for
kindergarteners to understand. They often dont know the difference
between a town, county, state, or country.

Lesson Goal(s) / Standards:

K.W.8 With guidance and support from adults, recall information from
experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a
question.

K.W.7 Participate in shared research and writing projects.

K.G.1.1 Recognize that maps and globes represent places.

Lesson Objectives:

After reading two books and finding facts on the internet, students will
be able to orally identify one fact they learned with 100% accuracy.

After researching facts as a class, students will be able to draw one

fact they learned about Aberdeen, South Dakota, or the United States
of America with 100% accuracy.

After finding Aberdeen on a South Dakota map, students will be able to

draw a dot on its location, with assistance, with 90% accuracy.

Materials Needed:

USA Factbook, Children Around the World, paper, coloring pencils

Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics:

There are twenty-five students in this class. The classroom has five tables with five
students sitting at each table. There is a wide range of skill and developmental levels.
They like to work in groups and do well working together. There is a carpet at the front of
the classroom for whole class instruction and plenty of room for working in partners if
needed. Technology is available in the computer lab and there is a Promethean Board in
the classroom.

A. The Lesson

1. Introduction (10 minutes)

getting attention:

Have a map of the world sitting out at the beginning of the

lesson. I will have nine places marked on the map.

relating to past experience and/or knowledge:

What is this? pointing to the map.

Ask a series of questions to relate to prior experience or

knowledge:
Does anyone know what country you live in?
Do you know what state you live in?
Do you know what town the school you go to is in?

creating a need to know:

We need to know where we live so we can find out what is going

on in the world around us. If we do not know we live in South
Dakota, then we will not pay any attention to what is happening
in South Dakota.

sharing objective, in general terms:

Today we are going to learn facts about Aberdeen, South

Dakota, and the United States of America. We are also going to
draw a picture about one of the facts we learn! Lastly, we are
going to find Aberdeen on a South Dakota map.

2. Content Delivery (30 minutes & Read-Aloud, Direct

Instruction)

We are going to begin by reading a book today. This book is

called Children Around the World.
As I read, I point out on the map of the world the different places
the children in the book live at.

Now we are going to learn some facts about where we live.

Earlier, we talked about where we live. We all go to school in
Aberdeen, South Dakota. This is where Aberdeen, South
Dakota (point to Aberdeens approximate location)
is located on a map of the world.

Lets research some facts about Aberdeen. Pull up website with

facts about Aberdeen.

We go through the facts that we find on the webpage.

Now, lets be researchers again! This time we are going to

research some facts about South Dakota, which is the
state we live in. There are some facts in a book called The
USA Factbook.

We read the facts in the book.

Lastly, lets research some facts about the United States of

America on this webpage (the US consulate fact page for
kids).

Talk about the facts on the website.

What was one fact we learned today that stuck out to you?

Next, when you get back to your tables, I will hand out a piece
of blank paper. Please draw a picture about one fact you
learned today. I would like you to write one word about
your picture. I will come around and have you tell me what you
drew about.

Thank you for working so quietly. Now I am going to come

around with a map of South Dakota. I will help you find where
Aberdeen is located and I would like you to draw a dot with
your pencil where on that spot.

3. Closure (5 minutes)

At your tables talk about one thing you learned today. Then I will
have you share it with the class.
Have each table share what they learned today.

B. Assessments Used

Informal Assessment:

Students orally identify one fact they learned.

Students draw one fact they learned.

Students draw a dot where Aberdeen is located on a South

Dakota map.

C. Differentiated Instruction

Students will receive aid based on whether or not they are

understanding the content. Students who are not as far along with
their writing will just be expected to write one word about
their picture. Students who are able to write well will be pushed to
write three to four words about their picture.
