PROBLEMS IN THE AQUARIUM AND SEWER SYSTEM IN THE CITY OF
SANTA MARTA
Thanks to the denunciations made by some inhabitants of the city, It was known
that Santa Marta is suffering a terrible episode of salubrity and environmental
impact, due to the overflow of the wastewater that floods the emblematic streets of
the same. The sewer system in charge of the service provider METROAGUA S.A
collapsed, so denounced the inhabitants, stating that odors are becoming stronger,
Much of the city's wastewater is discharged alongside port society and in BAHIA,
being this one of the places more visited by the tourists; the World Health
Organization WHO admits up to 50 colony forming units per 100 mL of seawater,
and in the beaches of Santa Marta were measured about 37000 units, which
means that swimmers are swimming in bacteria.
The fourth part of the city has no sewer and the one that is there is designed for a
population of 150,000 inhabitants and the Pearl of America as it is called, already
has half a million inhabitants.
But this is not the only problem as samarios also have difficulty with drinking water
service, due to the lack of networks in certain sectors, the poor quality of the liquid
since the system mouthpiece is located in the same place where the sewage is
poured, which has generated that this is not optimal for human consumption.
According to international standards, so that the water is potable must be below 5
in the index 'Irca', which measures pollution, but in the last year Santa Marta had
records of 11. This is causing 37% of children under 5 years of age to become ill,
which is going from being a problem of bad structuring and handling of the system,
to a social problem.
