Jocelyn is bright, social, and committed to her community. She has volunteered since ninth grade
in her church providing child care, and as a teachers assistant for 3rd graders. She enjoys helping
others in and out of the classroom, something that is evident when she is placed in classroom
groups, which always succeed because of the way she supports others and creates a working
environment where everyone is validated and can contribute. She also served as a poll worker in
major elections.
Jocelyn is dedicated to her education, taking a rigorous course of study, including multiple AP
courses. This past summer she was accepted to Cosmos, a program at UC Irvine, to take a month
long college course on Statistics and Probability. She grew enormously in the college
environment, in a course taught by four different professors in a project based learning format.
She spent over 100 hours coding data systems. She loved the college experience which dispelled
any fears she might have had about her own ability to succeed. Her final project, on Cosmic
Variance, was very comprehensive and was widely praised.
She will be in the first generation of her family to attend college. Education is important to her
parents who both work minimum wage jobs. They have supported her in staying focused on
school as they raised her in South Central Los Angeles, a neighborhood notorious for violence,
drug use and gangs. Jocelyn has always maintained a GPA of 3.6 or better. They had similar
success with her older sister who is already attending college. Jocelyn plans to major in Business
and Accounting.
Jocelyn is a remarkable person, and a valuable member of any community she belongs to. She
carries the hopes of her parents with her. She wont disappoint them. I hope you consider her
application favorably.
Sincerely,
Susan Kacvinsky, MA
