MOTIVATION

Students will stand in a circle and review what they learned the day before about nouns
by tossing the globe to a peer. The student with the globe must think of a noun that
pertains to the Earth.

DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES

1. Students will review nouns with the two large poster boards saying what nouns are that
the students created the day before with the teacher facilitating their responses. (Can
anyone recite what we learned yesterday about nouns? Give me some examples.)
2. Students will read Mrs. Spitzers Garden together as a class on the rug as a read aloud.
(By investigating the cover, what do you think the book is about? Why do you think Mrs.
Spitzer knows so many things? Do you see any similarities or difference in Mrs. Spitzers
classroom compared to your classroom? Why do you think Mrs. Spitzer likes to garden?)
3. Students will go back to their seats and the teacher will demo how to set up each column
either People, Place, Thing, or Idea on Template #1. (Who can point out where I am
supposed to place these words on the template?)
4. Students will paste the templates into their interactive notebooks.
5. Students will label each column in Template #1 person, place, thing, or idea from left to
right.
6. Students take out their own copy of Mrs. Spitzers Garden.
7. Students will read each page and identify the nouns throughout the entire book.
8. Students will decide if each noun is a person, place, thing, or idea and then place the noun
in the correct column.
9. Students will raise their hand to get Template #1 checked when they are finished.
