Effects of Child Abuse and Neglect for Adult Survivors, Australian Institute of Family
The article discusses the effects of various types of child abuse on the adult survivors. It
states that the multiple factors that can affect the consequences of both child abuse and
neglect. The effects range from reenacting such behaviors to self-harm. Within the
My topic is about the phycological effects of child abuse. The initial intent was to just
narrow it down to only physical abuse. However, while reading I knew I needed to
expand my search. The various forms of child abuse have overlapping effects. What
intrigue me most was that child abuse can link to PTSD or various forms of narcissism.
The reliability of the article can be determined through the dates of the references in
comparison to the date of the article and now. The article was published January of 2014
which is three years old. The dates of the references range from 1997 to 2013. With
those things in consideration I still trust this information. I believe it because it does not
take a definite stand that on the effects it has stated. Also, it is evident that time has been
taken to test what has been stated. As stated above majority of the data collected are from

research groups. The data is not always error free. The individuals who did participate in
these experiments are also participate in other clinical research groups. The web site
even said that key factors in one life such as social and economic status were not put is

Dr. Millers book helps the reader address ones problem without blaming oneself. That
the way ones parent(s) treated them reflected the actions of how they were raised, in a

Harris, Nadine. How childhood trauma affects health across a lifetime YouTube, uploaded by
This video is about Harris story on how to fight back the effects of child trauma on
childrens health. In the Bayview area Dr. Harris worked as a pediatrician and saw a
repeated cases of health issue in her patients. She took it upon her herself to look further
into it: she found out that majority of her patients were experiencing childhood trauma.
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) include any potential event or situation that can
have a negative impact on a childs life: parents with mental issues or substance abuse to

emotional, physical or sexual abuse. She found out that adversity on a child makes them
12 times more likely to have suicidal thoughts, and three times more likely to develop
lung cancer.
The information provided in this video makes me want to look deeper into ways to
alleviate child adversity in our country. Dr. Harris wants to make more practices like her
own and make others aware of the relationship between health issues and child adversity.
Dr. Harris graduated from University of California, Davis and earned her masters degree
at Harvard University. She is a member of the advisory campaign for Too Small to Fail.
This campaign is linked to the Clinton Foundation which encourages the brain
development of children from birth to the age of five. The biggest problem with this
foundation is that it has been in the cross fire of fraudulent correspondences. According
to the organizations website under Fraud Alert, the latest post, October 2015, warns
those subscribed to the foundations email system not to reply to emails about a lottery
and/ or cash prizes. I want to believe this video and Dr. Harris work.
Child Welfare Information Gateway. Long-term Consequences of Child Abuse and neglect.
Washington, DC: U.S Department of Health and Human Services, Childrens Bureau
PDF. 2013
The PDF discusses that children who have reported maltreatment can experience various
forms of physical, emotional, social and behavioral effects. In 2011, 676,569 children are
victims of child abuse and neglect. The fact explains that the long-term effects are in
response to the duration of the abuse, the age at which it occurred and the relationship
between the perpetrator and child. The child can experience brain trauma from excessive

I learned from this PDF that teens who went through mistreatment are more likely to
repeat grades, participate in risky sexual behaviors and many other negative activities. I
think it provides more background information. Prevent Child Abuse America believes
indirect cost of child abuse effects ones work productivity, criminal activity and mental
illness.
Soyer, Renate. Narcissism and Achievement Motivation as Related to Three Facets of the Sales
Role: Attraction, Satisfaction and Performance. Journal of Business and Psychology, vol
The report discusses how narcissists gravitate toward sales positions to increase
confidence in their abilities, and materialistic goods. This pleases the narcissist because
of limited supervision which leads to a decrease in the ability for others to critic them and
From other sources, I found out the at narcissism is linked to child mistreatment. This
need to feel superior which is reflected in ones achievement. I also happen to work a
retail job which I do enjoy a lot because of the freedom. However, the article goes into
detail of how the narcissist would take advantage of customers for their own needs to
advance sales. I am not particularly like that because deceiving others make me feel
guilty. I find the article interesting because it focuses on the other end of the spectrum.

The research was done in 1992 so the difference in time plays a big role. If the survey
was conducted more recently then the data would be more reliable. The participants had
to complete a 7-page questionnaire, which can lead to issues in the validity of the data
itself. In total 456 of the questioners were handed out while 206 were returned. This
seems to be very accurate since not many would actually complete the full 7-page packet.
